    [An Unexpected Gladiatorial Match]

The demon's blind face turns to Jezebel, its scream turning to heavy breathing, thick with hate. Hate for everything and everyone around it, hate for being bound to this disgustingly static dimension at all. But it focuses this blind loathing on the person in front of it.

The blades and spikes float out from behind the creature to bar Jezebel's path, trying to jab and cut at her. Three of them attack her now, one of them going for her chest while the other two slash at her arms and legs. The others are held in reserve. The creature is surprisingly precise with them, given its appearance and behavior. However, its reach is not as long as she might have expected, nor is it sending them straight at her in a rapid pattern. Deflecting the one going for her chest won't be difficult, since Jezebel is expecting it. If she can deal with those attacking her arms and legs as well, she will have a moment to shoot the creature before the blades come back for another attack, with another one joining the fray.

It is a simple thing for Jezebel to deflect the blade aimed for her chest with just a flick of her wrist, but it takes a fair bit more effort for the other two. Rather than try to actually deflect them, she dives forward between them. She rolls on impact, getting up to her feet, and while she has avoided those attacks for now it definitely leaves her in the precarious position of the two likely being behind her. All she can hope for is that a well placed shot can stagger it...

But when she sweeps the gunblade upwards and pulls the trigger, there's no actual projectile that comes with the gunshot. The weapon's edge glows orange-red instead as the magic of the shell suffuses it, but it was certainly not the outcome Jezebel expected or wanted. She's angered, disgusted by it, but despite seeing the new blades arraying in front of her, she's forced to push off the ground to try and finish closing the distance. That was one of five shells used up, though the enchantment on the weapon holds for now.

The gun's discharge did have some effect in that it caused the demon to flinch and brace for an impact that never came. The two blades come from behind, trying to stab her in the back, while two hover in front of the thing in a defensive position. It appears that the demon either can't or won't put all the blades in motion at once... for now, at least. There's no guarantee this won't change if the need arises.

The catgirl doesn't look any less concerned by this observation, nor comforted by Anika's carefree attitude to it all - but she doesn't protest either, simply sighing as the bird-shaped Night Elf flies off into the fray above. "Fraid not," she shouts in response. "No magic here. But I'll be damned if I won't help if I can - I'm willing to hop on that helicopter if it's the only thing we can do better than this!"
"Are we living a life that is safe from harm? Of course not, we never are. But that's not the right question. The question is: are we living a life that is worth the harm?"

[Geneva and Laz in Not So Friendly Skies Moonwell Melee!]

    Oh.

    The birds are attacking now.

    Alright.

Geneva has a couple of pretty major advantages here. First and foremost is the fact that she's quite small and extremely mobile.

    Second?

She spins in a tight circle, breathing out a wave of searing draconic fire.

Geneva has some pretty nasty weapons at her disposal.

The mew zips between grasping claws, releasing burst of flame into demon birds that edge in too close. She's using the barrier platform that she's maintaining for Laz as... well... a barrier. Keeping up with Laz toasting any of the birds that approach from the sides or below. With Laz above and Geneva under, they can watch each other's backs when it comes to the encroaching flock of doom.

That's not to say Geneva gets off without injury. Every now and again a claw will gouge at her, but despite her small size she proves to be surprisingly resilient.

She would be MORE resilient if she could make better defensive use of her barrier, but her primary concern there is keeping Laz up in the air.

~Keep heading toward the airship,~ Geneva says to her ghoulish partner. ~They're going to need our help.~

Geneva and Laz in Belated Beastly Bird Brawl!

Unless those talons are made of something extraordinarily powerful, the birds that swipe fruitlessly at her plate armor are going to learn the hard way that throwing their hollow bird bones towards Saint Lazarus is just going to make it that much easier for her to break them. For every flier that dares cross her, maiming and mutilation awaits. The ones she kills immediately are the lucky bunch; the rest of her victims will get to have fun crashing into the sea and slowly drowning in the waves below.

"They're going to need bigger demons," she boasts, before one swoops down at her from out of nowhere and gets its talons caught in the eye slits of her helmet. Yikes, I guess that's what overconfidence gets you. It's going to be a little harder for her to see the next wave of demons with all this blood in her face, but given the way she just reaches out and snaps the offending ornithoid's wing with but a single gauntleted hand, I don't think it's going to be that big of a problem for her. Worst case scenario, she can just take off the helmet and explain her green skin and spooky red eyes to her party members later.

"I-I'm fine, let's keep going," she insists, sounding more chagrined than pained by the bird that carved up her face. That was a terribly unexpected bit of cosmic comeuppance for her hubris, but what does a zombie need all of that blood and skin for anyway, right?

    [An Unexpected Gladiatorial Match]

It seems the crowd wasn't expecting the fight to be so even, not that they seem disappointed. Each time there is a strike or a clash there are gasps and in Jezebel's case, cheers.
The annoucher have fallen silent and from the grand platform the Anex and Ildabog are watching intently. The demonic warlock occasionally sipping on a glass of wine and eating what seems to be popcorn.

Geneva and Laz in Belated Beastly Bird Brawl!

The ravens are bulkier than any flight-able avian should be. Their strange arms in particular seems like they should belong to some heavier land-animal which might partly explain their relatively slow flight speed. So while they might not be able to pierce Laz armor or Geneva's sturdy skin they can likely feel the blows they're being inflicted with.

But even if they don't have much luck in their attacks they don't act like any sane foe and retreat. Seemingly hellbent on inflicting even minor injuries at the cost of their own lives.
But this suicidal tactic will quickly thin out their numbers the way Geneva and Lazarus are going at it. Bringing them down one by one with dragon fire and a sword that cuts through them like a razor.

Only a few remain, but at least they've kept the two off the bats who are keeping up their attacks against the skyship. Geneva and Laz (or at least Geneva considering Laz injury) can see that one of the bats seem to have turned super-sized and is attacking the other bats while someone is barraging them with arrows.
But onboard the deck of the skyship are now two black golems with the apperance of pit fiends that seem to be cutting through the crew with their blades. It seems like the crew have difficulty damaging them.

[Moonwell Annihilation - On the Skyship]

The adventures has retreated from the fiend as it has left only corpses in it's wake. Fortunately for Awen it turns it's back to her just as the conjures the shadow arms.
Grabbing a hold of it the demonic construct tries to pull itself free but is defenitly hindred as a result. It sure isn't paying her any attention when she runs towards it. However, as her hair starts to grab a hold of it the fiend speaks some demonic phrase and a tether made of the same blue light that can be seen through it's eyes shoots out from it and seems to anchor it to the deck of the skyship.

While Awen's hair can ensnare it the tether prevents it from being lifted above ground, helping the fiend from being rendered helpless in the air. But as it also seems to prevent it from moving forward (or backwards) it's not getting any closer to anyone.
Starting to try to slice through Awen's hair with it's enchanted blades or move its arms to keep it from ensnaring them it barely even seem to notice her until it suddenly looks up right in it's eyes. The fiend does indeed have a mind as the spirit of a fiend animates the metal shell. However, it has form of magical resistance, as evidenced by how little direct spells seem to harm it, so the process might take longer than normal.
The other adventurers would take this opportunity to strike but instead Awen hears more screams as it seems another pit fiend golem have appeared on the ship in the middle of the retreating adventurers. They've managed to avoid casualties as a one of the manages managed to spirit-walk the group away from the demon, but they're running out of options as the construct proves resilient to most forms of ranged attacks. They're going to need something stronger.

An arcane archer has decided to simply ignore the golem for this reason and focus on the bats trying to melt down the ship. Sending volley's of arrows into the air as the bats also have to focus on avoiding the giant demon-eating bat Awen had unleashed.

    Moonwell Annihilation - Sailor Loons

Sylv turns to Blanche and opens her mouth as if to object, but then closes it again as she seem to consider further.
"It's not that fragile." Her co-worker remarks.

The mercenary goblin rubs her nosal bridge tiredly. "...a few points, Katty. First, it was designed with goblins in mind. I think you're just small enough to fit, but just barely. Second, it has no weapons whatsoever. There was a good reason I never mentioned it to you before. It's not made for battle, just to fly around Illsa on her safaries. Finally... well, Gilbert, why don't you take her to it?"

"Aye, m'am." Gilbert the goblin gestures for her to come along.

He hurries inside the cockpit and if Blanche follows see will see him pulling out a deep drawer and lift out a black metal box which he hands to her. "Here you go. You have these in the outlands too or do I need to show you how to use it?"

[Moonwell Annihilation - On the Skyship]

"Don't worry, I'll take care of this one!" the witch calls out, so all the other adventurers can focus-fire on the other. She doesn't look away from the one she's entangling, because she doesn't want it looking at her and able to process thoughts clearly at the same time.

She says that, but getting any closer to this thing terrifies her. Her legs just don't want to move, even though she has to get closer to do anything. It's cutting her hair, which hurts a little but it also means she wont have a lot of time before it's free to do whatever it wants again.

Awen does a quick and simple spell on herself: one that forces her mind to misinterpret all pain as pleasure and all fear as desire. Her panicked, shallow breathing turns heavy and her frozen legs start running towards the construct.
To help close the distance quickly, she follows that up with a second spell, requiring only making a hand-symbol. Nonsensical cold flames burst out of her feet, burning away her shoes, scorching the wood of the ship in a circle around her, and freezing everything on the ground in the vicinity of the circle. It also has a handy side-effect of allowing her to run twice as quickly at the expense of the both burning and freezing her feet, but she doesn't mind for obvious reasons. It'll also begin slowly burning away the shadow-tethers. Once she reaches the construct, the circle will be big enough to encircle her, the construct, its shadow-tethers, and its own energy tether.

Finally, she's close enough to put her plan into motion: she casts one last spell by raking her claws against her face, going downwards. She digs in deeper than she needs to, but it all just feels like pleasure to her. The endorphins from the injury make her feel completely giddy and she begins laughing.
And then, the ship's deck around Awen and her construct within the flame circle tear apart in the same pattern as the new cuts on her face. Then, the whole ship under them opens up like a mouth trying to eat the both of them. Unless the construct tries to create a new tether somewhere other than the nearby part of the deck, the burning section of the deck will move down through the ship - as the rest of the ship below moves out if its way - and out of the bottom of the ship, into freefall with both Awen and the construct.

And then, like a mouth, the gaping hole in the ship will close up again.

Benedict reaches down to pick up a chunk of statue. "I don't know where they are. I should have kept my manservant nearby so I could send it to fetch them, if it became necessary. This is why you shouldn't trust independent operators, child. Either hire them so you have the power to fire them if they are disobedient, or kill them and raise their corpses so they cannot be disobedient." That's... not as good advice as you think it is, Benedict.

    Points for trying, I guess?

Benedict turns and heads toward the door, checking on the seal to determine if the seal is broken yet and they can continue their exploration.

    Unexpected Gladiator Match

Jezebel didn't have many options before her. She could fight in a distant battle of attrition and lose, close and attempt to win out at point blank range where she'd be defenseless against so many blades, or risk a gambit that's going to leave her hurt but probably victorious if she succeeds. If she succeeds. Thankfully, the demon flinching gives her enough of an opening to try, and just a few feet away from it, she hurls the gunblade at the demon's chest like a throwing axe. The heavy tip should drive the burning hot blade deep and hopefully provide enough of an opening for Jezebel to finish her charge. If it works, she'll ram her shoulder into the back of the gunblade, forcing it in deeper.

She pays no attention to her own defense however and the two blades behind her stab deep into her upper back, possibly getting stuck in the bone and muscle of her shoulders.

    Operation Seaslug

Titania furrows her brow, causing her antennae to sway a bit before she looks questioningly at Will. This seemed like an odd situation to be in, but no odder than before and it would likely allow them to get out of here quickly. "What sort of trouble is she in?"

It is difficult to say if the demon has any kind of tactical awareness; it doesn't exactly have an expression or means of communication. Still, it appears it didn't see Jezebel's gambit coming. The gunblade strikes it straight in the chest, punching through the bone-chain and the demon's body. Two blades move to intercept, but they're not enough. Deep purple fluid oozes from the wound, more like oil or tar than blood. The shocked creature has no time to respond when Jezebel charges, but one blade will try to slash across her shoulder awkwardly before she hits the gunblade. The weapon is driven deeper into the demon with a sickening crunch of bones... or whatever it is inside. The "Blind Skewer" falls to its knees, keening loudly as the blades clatter around it. The purple ooze is spurting out of the wound more freely.

The statue doesn't respond to the lack of time or Benny's terrible advice as it is a broken statue without much to say, really. Just a busted marble statue. Benedict is free to collect a piece of it, though.

Aaaand... that's about it. Looking at the slowly shifting spirals, our heroes could probably estimate that they've got about fifteen minutes left before the next Call.

Should they go looking for their allies? Maybe they got distracted?

Meanwhile, Anchor searches the top of the lighthouse! There's she'll find... well. A mostly empty room with a place to light a large fire in the middle of it. There doesn't appear to be any electricity here so they need to make their signal fires the old fashioned way.

By tossing people into the fire!

As evidenced by the blackened bones in the midst of the ashes. Typically humans don't make very good fuel, but whoever is lighting the lighthouse is really trying their hardest to make it work. Around the neck of one of the skeletons Anchor will find an iron pendant with a odd sigil etched into it. Looks like a three pointed crown shedding rays with a rising sun behind it. Fascinating.

    As for Zoph?

Well, the barkeep is reloading his crossbow. It seems like he isn't going to let the paladin finish the ritual if he can stop it.

"Maybe we should get their attention somehow?" There isn't much time before the seal opens again. It's probably important to get Zoph and Anchor back before then, but Sekhmet has no idea where they might be. Something big and obvious. That might bring them back.

    Well.

    Looks like talking didn't work.

He can hear the crossbow reloading. It takes, like, what, twelve seconds to reload one? If the barkeep only aims at nonvital parts, he could maybe weather a half dozen or so shots, but the barkeep will probably only start aiming better and better and there's enough time for several dozen more shots. In fact, if Zophiel continues to do nothing, the barkeep could just walk up to point-blank range.

So, obviously, just standing there is not an option.

Zophiel focuses his breathing and removes one hand from the spear - you really only need one hand for a ritual's spear, right? He points that hand down the hall towards his swords that he placed there as barricades.
Black threads shoot out of his hand and wrap around the large red sword - the one called Mercy -'s hilt and then pull it out of the ground and towards him. With that arm, he then throws the sword down the hallway - deliberately missing the barkeep, but so that it'll stick into the wall, point first. "That's your warning," he says, tensing himself in preparation for another crossbow shot.

Anchor looks around the room, wasting a whole half-minute being horrified. The only thing left are bones and that weird necklace.
Ew. And it's made of iron.
Who were these bones? Old travelers? People opposed to the forgetful thing? The lighthouse-keeper's own family?

Anchor's shadow slips out and grabs up all the bones it can, letting them sink into the darkness and disappear to the place it keeps all its things, leaving only the odd sigil.
Anchor herself gets a cloth out of her bag, folds it over, and picks the pendant up very gingerly.

Now, back to the chapel, as quick as can be!

The flailing blade cuts deep into her shoulder alongside the two that stabbed into her back, but she doesn't relent in her onslaught. When the demon is felled, she gets back up from the ground and growls as she grips the gunblade. There's a sickening crunch as she rips it out of the thing's chest and another as she swings it down at Blind Skewer's neck. And then a third...and fourth until finally the head rolls free. Blood drips freely from her wounds, but she pays it no mind as she grabs the head and walks towards the edge of the arena. The crowd gets to watch Jezebel spin a couple times before hurling the head to the crowd. "Let it begin!" She shouts, thrusting the gunblade into the air as she proclaims her victory.

Blanche has never been on a helicopter before, so perhaps she doesn't quite grasp the level of operational difficulty and the risks of attempting to bail from one during a crash. They weren't exactly common modes of transportation where she hails from.

"And, er - it's Blanche, by the way." With that awkward and over-the-shoulder parting line, the woman follows Gilbert down to the craft. She gives the goblin a quizzical look as the box is thrust into her hands. "Er, no."
"Are we living a life that is safe from harm? Of course not, we never are. But that's not the right question. The question is: are we living a life that is worth the harm?"

Benny and Sekhmet brainstorm flare illusions! Useful stuff. But given that they haven't done anything yet they are met with the fanciful sight of the clock continuing to wind down toward the moment of doom! Hopefully everything is totally fine with their party members.

    Meanwhile!

Zoph has a crossbow bolt in his back!

    It probably isn't very comfortable.

The paladin tosses a sword at the inn owner, which is startling enough to make him lose his grip on the crossbow's crank, the bolt flying off with a *ping!* as the string snaps back into its rest position.

"I can't- I have to stop you!" he replies, fumbling for another bolt. "I MUST!"

At the very least it would appear as though the reloading process has been delayed.

As for Anchor? The stairs do in fact have a banister she can slide down if she so desires. The skull of the skeleton the pendant was around the neck of has a hole in it. More or less what one might expect from a gunshot wound. Probably someone who was snooping around. The pendant doesn't do anything odd when it is pocketed. That done, Anchor will be able to return to the chapel without being harassed. She'll likely find Benny and Sekhmet discussing how to get the attention of Anchor and Zoph.

Anchor bursts through the door of the chapel!

"Okay made it it time-there was another of those monsters at the lighthouse I mean there used to be I killed it-they had been doing human sacrifices there I mean that's what it looked like-found this thing Benedict you're faster at identifiying stuff what is it?
She hand over the wrapped pendant.
    Deep breath.

Oh no. Where has Zophiel gotten to?

Anchor's shadow creeps along toward the countdown door of doom.

So Zophiel was performing a ten-minute ritual that would cleanse the influence from everyone in the tavern, right? Using the spear. One of his hands is pretty occupied with the spear. He threw a sword, leaving one of them nearby, but Zophiel realizes he really only has two options: throw the second sword and *actually try to hit* either the innkeeper or his crossbow, or to try something else to immobilize him. The ritual still has a few minutes left, so he can't just wait and take shot after shot from the crossbow.

He's pretty sure the innkeeper is also a victim of this, however, so he doesn't want to kill him if he can avoid it.

"And I've got to stop you," he says coldly.

The paladin decides his only option is to try a trick he's done a couple times before - he points his hand at the sword-that's-stuck-in-the-wall. Black threads leave his fingers and stretch towards the sword...and weave themselves into chains. It takes a little while, but luckily the reloading has been delayed so he has a little while to do it.

Once the chain finally gets to the sword, Zophiel points to the left and the chain suddenly bends and darts towards the innkeep. If the innkeeper keeps on aiming and shooting instead of avoiding or running away, he'll get wrapped up in the chain.

"Uh, hi?" Sekhmet says to Anchor. "Where's, uh, your friend? We were thinking about ways to get your attention." She nervously gestures with her wand and lashes her tail.

"An illusionary flare was the leading idea, though it might attract the wrong kind of attention. Where is my bodyguard? I thought he was with you." Since he hired Zophiel a while ago. "If he doesn't turn up soon, he'll miss the chapel's opening."

"Another amulet. I recognise the symbol; it was in the house where the child here picked up the artefact she holds. I don't know it's meaning, however. I don't think I've seen it before. Iron's an interesting choice; traditionally used against spirits and faeries, iron is believed to harm them." I'm pretty sure the symbol was displayed in that house, but Benedict hadn't encountered it before.

"Uh, oh, Zophiel. He went to the inn, to warn everyone about the call coming again."
Anchor sighs. "He should have been here already."

She walks over to the stairs to look to her shadow. "Go help him. Do whatever it takes."
The shadow twists so that one can see it grinning a toothy grin, and then bounds back out of the chapel, scuttling along the ground on all fours.

"Spirits like the saint, perhaps? It was the only thing left of one of the victims up there. This doesn't feel like faerie magic, but I guess- I mean, we don't really know. Didn't seem to do them much good. Maybe it's just a lucky charm."

"I never said that! Yabaklaew!" The imp insists with what sounds like a curse. "I'll pop away, ha!" But rather than doing that it points a claw in Jezebel's direction. "You new on the block, yeah? Means big bad things! If you, eh, pay me I'll keep you informed about that. S'long as I don't betray information about the master!"

At this point the guards seem to be waiting for the signal to fire at the imp. The anex in turn waiting for a signal from Jezebel. Her body language suggests that she isn't being very patient though. Curtains have been drawn over the platform, shielding them from the eyes of the crowd.

    Festival of Bloodlust

The Anex and her guards will likely be startled once more unless they notice the nearly unbridled rage that crosses Jezebel's features. Her arm snaps out, causing a chain of deep purple-back shadow to stretch out from a shackle on her wrist to snap around the Imp's neck. Her force of will comes crashing down upon it, attempting to bind it not only physically bit spiritually to keep it from vanishing on its own. The chain has no real physical presence to those incapable of interacting or sensing spiritual beings, but they can be seen regardless. "How dare you presume to act as my superior, wretch." She snarls. "You should count your blessings that I choose not to devour your pitiful essence where you stand! You will tell us what you can, or I will annihalate you from every plane of existence that you can imagine!"

The imp's eyes widens at Jezebel's sudden outburst. But that's all it manages to do before it's wrapped in chains. Once again invisible for the majority present.
Though, what she gets is mostly panicked begs and wails from the little demon. "Nooo! Please! I'm bound! I can't reveal anything! I'll do anything else though! Just don't destroy me, great lady! Anything!"

The anex keeps glancing at the door, hoping her warlocks would arrive soon. They were taking far too long time...

The innkeeper shouts in surprise when he suddenly finds himself bound by chains of darkness!

He does manage to get off one more shot in spite of this, though, but the shot is rather awkward and may very well completely miss.

Bound by the shadows, he's now unable to reload his crossbow.

"Please! You don't understand! The Saint needs these people! If she doesn't get them then she won't be able to protect our village!"

    Hmm. That's an interesting statement.

A few minutes remain on the ritual.

    Meanwhile!

The crown and crescent symbol doesn't do anything particularly weird when observed. Unlike the odd spiraling designs our heroes have seen around the town this object doesn't cause a supernatural sense of foreboding. Maybe it's just a hole symbol of some kind? If there's any magic to it, it is either subtle or very selective.

I'm sure Anchor's shadow will arrive some time before the spear-ritual finishes.

Zophiel needs to have his attention split: so that the innkeeper doesn't break free from the chains, and so that the ritual can be done. Having your attention split like this is kind of annoying, but it does give him time to think and consider. "Killing uninvolved people to protect others is never justified," he says, snapping at the innkeeper. "The Saint needs to find another way."

He uses this time to think through what the innkeeper said. Protect the village...from whom? Up until now, Zophiel had thought there were only two sides - first, Neptune and whatever was out in the ocean. Then, Neptune and the Saint of Forgetfulness. But, now that he thinks about it, it seems possible that this ocean-thing isn't the same as the Saint. There might be three sides to this? Maybe more?
The paladin thinks a little aloud, so that the innkeeper can interject if needed. "Neptune's keeping something away with the storm," he reasons, "and you said Neshiyahel is also keeping something away?" Because if Neptune was keeping the Saint away, that wouldn't make sense - you'd think this Saint would already be here since the villagers basically tried to evict Neptune already. Does this mean the thing that caused the sea-call is separate from this Saint of Forgetfulness? Were the people downstairs going to be sacrificed to give the Saint power to protect the villagers from the call? And what does this have to do with the things that kid found, and the spear? Who made the spear that appears to perfectly counter this Saint? "Who exactly is this Saint protecting you from? How many different groups are involved in this all, anyway?"
