Using forks to each fries definitely doesn't sound like an American thing. When I picture "Freedom Fries", I picture them next to a triple decker hamburger and a strawed cup with an internal volume about double the size of my stomach. Cutlery doesn't fit into that picture.

That sounds delightful. Instead, they were just normal fries in the senate cafeteria, IIRC.

    Eh, if it's pronounced Pou-teen, then it's Canadian. If it's Pou-tin, then it's Quebecois.
(I did learn recently that it is supposed to be pronounced the latter way... but, whoops, the former's just so ubiquitous 'round here that the right way sounds wrong.)

Darn. Now I want poutine again. And the food truck with it isn't around until the weekend...

Depends on how hot the gravy is and how thick the roux used to make it was. I have had tasty gravy that was pretty solid even at high temperatures. It is the gelatin and the gluten in the flour that make it semi-solid.

And while I could go for your Freedom Fries, cut up hotdogs mixed in with fried potatoes is not actually horrible. It would probably be better with higher quality hotdogs though.

Wait, I though that "high quality hotdogs" was generally called "sausage". What's the old discworld joke? "[American Hot dogs ] are formally classed as “cheese” and only escaped, through being the wrong color, being defined as “tile grout.”" (yes, I know that's AM chocolate. I vaguely remember there being a similar one for sausage - probably CMOT's - but can't find it)

Also, I have a hard time picturing how even small chunks of hotdog would stick to the fries, even with copious amount of cheese as binding agent.

Pizza has the advantage of the contiguous bread base.

I suppose we could abandon the julienne fries for chips, but then I feel like a bit of the American-ness of the dish would be lost.

(As usual, probably putting more serious thought into this than the original comment warranted)

Hebrew National or Kirkland (I imagine Costco uses their own brand for their hot dogs) are the way to go. Nathan's will do in a pinch. If I worked in walking distance of the Costco, I'd go there for lunch every day.

Hebrew National, Costco hotdogs, and Nathan's are all-beef, yes. Costco and Sam's Club's food court offer a hot dog (again, I assume Kirkland for Costco, whil Sam's uses Nathan's) combo for a buck fifty. It's a quarter pound, all-beef hot dog and a fountain drink. Costco used to have polish sausage as well as the same deal, but nixed it a bit ago.

    I really, really love Costco.

ETA: They've had that deal since 1985. Haven't changed the price yet. I'll take them axing the polish to keep the price, much as I miss it.

Extra ETA: Apparently CostCo uses Kirkland Signature hot dogs with no by-products, corn syrup, phosphates, fillers, or artificial colors or flavors.

Conversation about Feathery Spawns of Satan
I'll let you in on a Canadian secret: Our Thanksgiving celebration is earlier in the year because it marks the end of the time where we gather up all our anger and aggression and channel it into Canadian Geese and then send them out into the world.

The secondary ritual is a winter war-game we call Hoc'Kae. And in the summer it's LaCrosse.

The local Kroger affiliate has a deal where I can buy a pound of hotdogs for a dollar, but they are chicken mixed with pork. I have heard that the Hebrew National hot dogs are really good, but I haven't ever been flush enough to buy them. Normally when I want a higher quality thing in a bun I go for a sausage, normally bratwurst.

I prepare my fried potatoes and hotdogs by cubing the potatoes at a quarter inch and throwing them, with a little oil or butter in my cast iron skillet. Once they start to brown I cube the hotdog and throw it in. When things are getting crispy, I throw in a chopped tomato for 30 seconds and shut off the heat. Then I throw a slice of american cheese on top and move to a plate. As I said, I think it would be better with better hotdogs.

I once watched one of his films in an economics class. It was good at making its point and even providing evidence, but it seems nobody ever stopped to say "anecdote is not the singular of data". Anecdotes inform the interpretation of data, they do not replace the need to acquire data. At the end of it I think I had a half page list of things that somebody should have asked if they wanted to actually convince people disinclined to agree with them.

Also, I vaguely remember Moore's voice as being incredibly annoying.

If you got a friend with a Costco membership, I wholly recommend Kirkland* (or, if you don't, Hebrew National. They're still my favorite, with Kirkland right behind). They're significantly better than other hot dogs, especially the quarter pounders. I very seriously debated asking my worplace for a transfer to a different location back in the mid to late aughts solely so I could hit up Costco for lunch as often as I wanted.

As for Michael Moore, again, all I can say (or at least, all I'm willing to say) is that Canadian Bacon is a radical departure from his normal style of filmmaking, and is pretty awesome. He does have a small, maybe five second cameo in the movie, but he cast himself very well in that cameo.

*Frankly, I recommend Kirkland brand anything. I cannot stress enough how much I love Costco; there's a whole bunch that's great about them, and the fact that their store brand is absolutely phenomenal definitely plays a part. I'd buy a damn Kirkland brand car if they made it. That episode of Modern Family nailed it.

What's truly tragic is that the winter ritual seems to have reached a point where the beloved clan of the Leafs of Maple are unable to secure Lord Stanley's silver chalice because of an alleged curse placed on their former founder, Sir Harrold of Ballard.

Oh, I love sports curses. Do tell! Also, the Stanley Cup is clearly the best trophy in all of sports.

Wait, the Mapleleafs have a curse? This is a story that must be told. First, we need proper lighting!

    *Dims lights*

*Starts fire in center of room*

    *Hands jwhouk a flashlight*

Now you may begin to relate the story of the Curse of the sweet tree leaf!

personally I envision chili, cheese, bacon, cheese, chives and cheese is what freedom fries should be.

I feel like that popularity and fame is meaningless now.
