The Homestuck fandom. Homestuck is a webcomic.

Yes, that aspect of it is messed up.

    The shipping aspect.

I mean, lots of fandoms have that, but the quadrants thing I linked makes it weirder there.

    Samson?

I doubt he'd have called Delilah an enemy, at least not at the point he was having sex with her.

Culturally, they were enemies; personally, they weren't. At the time, anyway.

Discussing it further seems like a bad idea.

It usually means "promoting the idea of a romantic or sexual relationship between fictional characters", as in the traditional "Kirk/Spock" fan fiction.

"Shipping" is derived from "relationship", where people basically match up (or ship) people in any given work (well, saying that it's limited to just one work is a vast understatement) who they think would make a good pair/set/whatever. At the most basic definition, anyways.

You know, if you have English as a second language and don't hang around in circles where the term "X with benefits" gets thrown around, chances are pretty good that you'll have no idea what the acronym "ESL" stands for. I mean, I'm near-native and hang around the right circles, and I still had to look it up.

Not ESL, just wasn't getting "hot person I cannot stand, but want to sleep with from this description. I figured, but the elaboration didn't mention sex, so I assumed things being more figurative. The use of "frenemy" wasn't leading me to think that sex was a thing.

So the elaboration was to see if this was looking for "sleeping with someone I detest" was the angle we were going with. Personally, I think that sort of thing is a terrible idea on about every level. And from that elaboration, I don't really see sex entering this equation? Maybe I have mis read something, though.

Amusingly enough, the vast majority of my early experience with the term was from people who had English as a second (or third) language.

Thankfully it's been rare for me, but I have run into the odd person who is rather... overly enthusiastic. It really depends on the circles you go around in. A lot of people are all cool about it, but there's the occasional bad egg.

Though, to be fair, "don't shove your opinions down my throat" is a pretty good rule of thumb in general. I don't care if you hate a food I love, or love a food I hate, for instance. Just don't go railing against me because I don't share your opinion, is all.

I will say that I did have one reader who was a little too emphatic on the point that they'd like two of my characters to get together and gave me a pretty exhaustive list of why, in spite of my stated refusal to do so.

    I guess that'd count?
