Default Descriptive discussion of the term "Heretic"

I had a personal question whether or not someone who is considered a Heretic of Religion X would still be called adherent to said overall religion.

The discussion would have no actual religion mentioned. I just want to dig at the actual meaning of the term "heretic" beyond the pop culture 40K use and the imperfect common usage people would think it means.

Is it an acceptable topic for a thread?

Sheriff: I don't see how that could be conducted within the Forum Rules. I guess you could try to discuss what the word means solely within a given fiction, but as soon as someone uses its real world basis, you're into real world religion. That seems inevitable.
