The wood pile lights easily. After five minutes, the entire line of fire is burning. The plant creature stays as far back as it can from the wall, obviously terrified of smoke. Then, with huge WHUMPS striking the side of the pit (i.e. closest to the entrance) it smacks the wall. The entire floor shakes, and you hear giant segments of the mud wall crashing down into the puddle at the bottom. The creature makes a noise like a gale howling through a forest.

John shakes his head, clearing his thoughts. Uh, damn... Gotta keep control of myself. He walks over to the half of the pit where the plant-thing isn't, and when one of the dirt clumps slides down, he jumps on it and goes with it.

John, I'd suggest Jumping down or Climbing down, as you've got good modifiers to both those skills. You'll take 2d6 damage if you simply jump down from 25 feet.

    Hynerst

After hesitating a few moments, straining to convince himself this is the only way but not quite believing it, he tucks away his crossbow, takes a deep breath and enters. He goes straight for the rope and clumsily tries to climb down, still holding the deep breath he took outside.

(climb check (1d20=3), rest of the post supposes that's not enough; if it is, I'll edit)

In his rush, he doesn't find a footrest, he slips, his arms hold on a few moments, and with a groan he has to let go, quickly uttering the verbal essence of feather fall to save himself.
He lands quietly, his nose wrinkled from distaste about the putrid water. He creates some distance between himself and the threatening flames and beast and starts moaning while waving nervously backwards and forwards. "Open the door, open the door, open the door, open the door"

The wall is 25 feet high. Each successful climb check means you can move 7.5 feet down the rope (as per the "climb" skill rules on pg 69 of the PHB). The DC of this wall is 10. (5 for "rope with wall to brace against, +5 DC for "slippery wall" as the wall is made of mud and is therefore very slippery). Therefore Jerek climbs down 7.5 feet this round, leaving 17.5 feet remaining to go, whereas Ru does not make any progress down the wall, but he didn't slip and fall off. Hynerst fell but landed safely at the bottom due to the feather fall spell. You can't take 10 on the wall now, as the creature is actively destroying part of the wall.

While you all are looking for the door, the plant creature to continues to tear down the wall. Soon you see that he has actually created a ramp for itself and is climbing out of the wall to the sunlight. The daylight is momentarily blocked as it struggles to fit it's huge mass through the door, but then it's gone.
