Re: Roland's Merciful Modly Mash-up Random Banter Thread #221
I was really bad at soccer as a kid, because I was told "don't kick with your toes; that'll break them!" so then I kicked with the top of my foot, and when I was told not to do that either (because it would break my ankle, though they didn't give that as a reason) and that I specifically need to kick with the inside of my foot, I turned my leg 90 degrees and swung it forward, then complained about how I felt like my hp was going to dislocate.
Apparently you're supposed to rotate your entire body before kicking... but the coaches never said that so I didn't learn about it until a few days ago, when I explained my confusion to my brother.
I use braces (also known as "curly brackets") to indicate sarcasm. If there are none present, I probably believe what I am saying; should it turn out to be inaccurate trivia, please tell me rather than trying to play along with an apparent joke I don't know I'm making.

It's the first thing they teach you because it's generally useful and easy for a beginner to learn. It's not the whole of it by any means, and there are real advantages to using the top, outside, and even front of your foot in certain situations. Plus there's the occasional chest or head hit.
I would really like to see a game made by Obryn, Kurald Galain, and Knaight from these forums.

Re: Roland's Merciful Modly Mash-up Random Banter Thread #221
Obviously the only way you should pass is to use the bottom of your toes to roll it back to you, then quickly but smoothly dig your toes underneath the ball and swing your leg out and up. Practice gets you control, and then your teammates can just head the ball to each other down the field, and you do y have to worry about this silly "ground" or "kick" nonsense.

Rugby and snooker, they are the only true sports.

Isn't Hockey just ice-rugby? Is that acceptable or not?
Personally I think none-contact sports are better to play but less interesting to watch, which is why they have slowly given way to contact sports in the US. Soccer and Baseball are safer and more fun to play yourself, so where local participation is more common they are more popular.

Whoever told you soccer is a non-contact sport is a lying b******, I suspect there are more serious injuries in soccer than in USA football.

Re: Roland's Merciful Modly Mash-up Random Banter Thread #221
I mean, I was going for the record, not the standard three hours.
In all seriousness one of my favourite Jones to tell immigrant friends is that the English have four seasons, and tend to go through them in a day. Generally if they laugh at that I know they 'get' English humour.
Rugby is an interesting one. Full contact Rugby is significantly more enjoyable to play than tag Rugby, and it's relatively safe if everybody's learnt to tackle properly and in proper kit (those rugby jerseys? Incredibly durable). I remember reading somewhere that while the chance for a rugby player to die from game related injuries is sky the same as an American Football player (I believe this is due to Rucks and Mauls), they're less likely to receive long term injuries (due to tackles being a drag to the ground and restricted to the person who has the ball). While Rugby players will often finish a game with cuts and covered in mud I think I've only ever seen one player have to leave the pitch.
Man, I really want to find a local rugby club. Although I should probably try to relearn my flat passes first.
(Note: my feelings on American Football are complex, boil down to me thinking that it's a worse game than Rugby due to overcomplication. Then again, I like Cricket*, but that flows completely logically and doesn't require terms like 'linesman' and 'quarterback'.)
* And baseball, although it very much feels like Americanised Rounders to me. Even the bats are bigger!

The best sport is clearly table tennis, though I do enjoy football.
