Are you supposed to be on an east coast or a west coast? I want to make sure I've got the sun right.

And what season is it?

East coast. In Sembia, west coast of the sea of Fallen stars, south of the city of Yhaunn. Lets assume that Maria left Thay around the night of her 8th birthday and the ocean voyage took about a year give or take since the ship took a few stops along the way. Her birthday is Mirtul 16. Is there something wrong with the dice roller? It seems to automatically put a -10 on my rolls. :(

You aren't the only one who thinks it sometimes "stutters" or rolls below average.

I'm struggling a bit with the next IC post. I want to get your input.

There is a common game vs story problem.

You want to be playing by a rules set to make things predictable.

You also want to tell a story. You also need to balance the story the player wants to tell with the story options the Gm wants to set up.

The problem with running both a "zero to hero" and a solo style game is that a low level character is really easy to kill, and it is difficult to provide a story that doesn't have too much of a chance to kill the character while also not seeming too easy.

There is also the issue of player agency over the character, GM influence on the character, and the elements of random chance changing the character.

I want to mitigate this by providing a slight power boost while not altering the rules too much.

But I don't just want to do things too arbitrarily.

I've set things up for you to choose to bond with the parrot. My plan is that if you do so it becomes your familiar and you gain a gestalt level of Sorcerer, with selected parrot and light themed spells.

This means you are still a level one character, but you have more spells available.

It will also set up a convention from 3e that a magic user/sorcerer can seek out magical creatures to learn spells from, usually by bartering a labor. (find magic creature, do favor for it, get a spell)

The plan is to give you an optional personal quest to seek out a phoenix to lean fire spells from. (Also and optional side quest to find buried treasure that the parrot knows about from previous contact with pirates).

I like it. And while I like roleplaying and storytelling, I also like structure and a little more order which is why I never really do freeform. I will try to do my best to make this a fun game you will enjoy as well. I promise. :)

As for the new spells.

Please refer to the page on Sorcerers in the PHB.

Basically, you have a second spell list and set of spell slots, and these use CHA as the casting stat.
If you want to transfer spells you know as sorcereries to you Wizard list, you will need to successfully scribe a scroll of the spell, and then transcribe it into your spellbook.

If you have cantrips on both lists, it might never be to your advantage to use the sorcerer version.

Did you account for the healing surge (that I may have forgotten to mention) and the bonus hit die she acquired by bonding with the familiar? She got an extra 6+ con mod HP.
