Re: Not-So-Mith'd Opportunity: Random Banter # 222
So I spent three quarters of an hour at Pride before the noise caused me to flee.
But can anybody tell me what the point of playing loud pop music is if your bus is right next to a marching band? Especially a good marching band?

Because they planned it without knowing/thinking who they would be next to. And then momentum and the plans in their head kept the people who could have turned it off from changing the plans.
ION watching a brewery full of people react to an earthquake by just covering their beers worried about falling dust and making surfer jokes was my new great moment of the week.

I feel like the ridiculousness of so many people are taking the black mermaid out of proportion a bit too far. I don't have any problem with a black mermaid and I'm black myself. Everybody needs to stop making a big deal out of It. The black mermaid won't destroy the world.

What they need to do is cast Terry Crews as Poseidon.

Re: Not-So-Mith'd Opportunity: Random Banter # 222
Ya know, I'd originally written that they could cast him as anyone, including Ariel, but until the day I get an all-Terry-Crews movie (or at least an all Terry-Crews-and-Dwayne-Johnson movie) I'll be satisfied with Poseidon. Talked myself out of that joke for being too wordy. That was a bad call.

Regardless, you'd think more people wouldn't care about race of a non-human character who died in painful agony because she was an idiot teenager, but who knows?

Re: Not-So-Mith'd Opportunity: Random Banter # 222
Wait, black Mermaid? Can we get an Asian centaur to go along with it?
I mean, I don't really care. I might be as white as a baked camembert but a) it's not like I'm going to see the movie, b) it's not like the character is a real person, and c) who cares as long as she can sing and act.
So.... any notice on that Asian centaur?

No, I don't keep up with this stuff, got no clue what you're talking about. Also, should have used coloured text to note it wasn't a truly serious remark.
Asian centaur asian centaur! (I'm going to keep banging this drum until I get it or get bored)
EDIT: uh, might not br the best idea to imply people of Spanish descent aren't white. They're at the very least considered white here (and in Spain to my knowledge).

Re: Not-So-Mith'd Opportunity: Random Banter # 222
well if you ascribe to the idea that centaurs are the mythologized reaction of non-horseback riding peoples to steppe nomad horseback riders then most "centaurs" would be arguably Asian.

Re: Not-So-Mith'd Opportunity: Random Banter # 222
Tonight I have to cut off another friendship with a longtime friend that I know at another forum. Apparently he didn't like the idea that Ariel should be a black mermaid and we were arguing about it. He's Caucasian and he didn't think my voice of truth doesn't mean anything to him because the color of my skin. He's a racist and I don't want to be friend with that type of person anymore.

I am going to be frank here. It just does not matter what race any character in any show is.

Re: Not-So-Mith'd Opportunity: Random Banter # 222
I would disagree with that. There are some stories where the culture of the characters plays an important part, and substituting someone from another culture would at best be cultural appropriation, and at worst just a different form of racism. For example, Pocohontas has to be an American Indian, so don't hire Scarlett Johansson to play her regardless of how good you think she'll look in the role.

Nah, it's a ridiculously expensive dating sim. And that too, unless it's a dating sim specifically about murder or incest...
It does change game quite a bit. Although I did pick the "culture" with the most extreme modifiers, so I can't really speak for the other animals. Digging through the game files, it seems cats are great if you want a murder mayhem going, hedgehogs good if you want to avoid the same, ducks make great coastal raiders, bears are terrifying on land, and dogs are just good dogs and best friends.
No, but it does have ducks, if you consider that close enough.
IRN:
I didn't go into Animal Kingdoms blind. I knew I saw a full list of the species and their modifiers, but now I can't find it (hence I had to dig through the game files above). I've scoured through my browsing history and the game itself without finding it, and it's frustrating me to the degree that even after waking up, I'm still frustrated about it!Clouddreamer Teddy by me, high above the world, far beyond its matters...

Re: Not-So-Mith'd Opportunity: Random Banter # 222
Having experienced a lot of theatre, I can tell you that with a great actor it doesn't matter what race they are, or if they're the right age or gender. Of course film and TV are different, mainly being able to see the actors more clearly, but I still think a great actor can pull it off.
Of course, the problem mainly comes from when castings are made to move from minority to majority. Now in the UK you are explicitly allowed to discriminate against actors based on race and gender, to avoid such problems as an ethnically chinese character played by a white actor in yellowface, but it does allow for the complete removal of minorities if the creators wish.
I've forgotten where I was going with this, but medium matters. Also, don't use puppets to represent autistic children in your plays.

I'm improving to be a better movie critic. Many people like my reviews. Also, one member in this forum suggests me to do a movie review on a classic movie. I'm so happy.

Re: Not-So-Mith'd Opportunity: Random Banter # 222
I'm actually a believer in building up reviewing skills by doing classics where everybody knows there's good reviews of them out there rather than new ones. Then move onto newer stuff where your pinion matters a bit more.
It's why I'm annoyed that I didn't take many screenshots of Planescape: Torment when playing it. More would allow me to explain my views on the game much better, and now I'm far enough into the game that many screenshots would involve spoilers, and as a story-based game that's problematic, Torment is best played practically blind (my only real suggestion to new players is 'focus on mental stats, get the Mage class ASAP). I suppose I could always try the opposite track and not use any screenshots at all...

Yes - we had an earthquake in California....pretty big one even for here but it hit is a reasonablely remote place-no deaths, a few gas, fires a couple hundred red-tags, some cracked roads etc....was however about a minute of good S-wave action even out where I am couple hundred miles away.
