As Lady Amara and Issarel explain to the guards, the voices of the miners you saved as well as the voice of Lady Claudia join yours which is more then enough to convince the guards to let you pass through the gates leading into town from Sheperad's watch. Your caravan sees little resistance as you walk through the district of New Haven as many either move quickly out of the way of the cart and the dead bodies being transported inside, or gwack from windows guessing at what might have happened.

It takes the lot of you five minutes to make it through the district and into Host square where some of the miners begin going their own separate ways. Leaving Timothy and Lady Claudia in the end remaining with you. Looking to the south Timothy turns to look at the group, not really sure who was in charge of the group. "If we go south into Old Haven we can get to the temple of the Lovers. I am sure Sister Rosalind will give everyone a right and proper funeral that has passed away. I know Gef followed the Mother and I'm sure his wife would like to know as well. If you want I can show you where she lives?" he asks the group.

"The dead are dead boy, what about the living? I'm covered in dirt, my feet hurt, can't tell you the last time I ate, and need to see my husband to let him know I'm okay." Lady Claudia responds. "We can bring you to your home if you wish." Daruk offers standing near Merienda. "We have been talking guys, and we are out. I'm sorry, but this is to much. Fighting dragon's is one thing, but devils is another. I'm a field surgen not a combatant." Daruk says to the rest of you before Merienda adds "I am only a traveler in these lands, and my best friend almost died doing what we were. I cannot risk his life, I am sorry but I to have decided to leave and return home to my Mother."

Issarel is pained, such good people, met under such unfortunate circumstances, she enjoyed their company, their bravery so much, she knew she would miss them terribly, but could not risk their lives any longer.

"Well met, and pained partings, we will dance again my...friends, we will dance again."

    Amara Van Tannin

Amara’s lip curls in distaste as some of their companions depart. It was an honor to be chosen by the Emperor himself to serve. Walking away is almost blasphemous in her eyes, but given she’s been trained from birth in decorum, she keeps her feelings to herself.

“Yes, they should have a proper burial,” she said, “and then I could use a bath and a good meal, maybe some drink. It has been a long and difficult journey. Would any of you care to break bread with me again?”

Sure, I'm willing to break a bread with you, but not now. Later. Tomorrow, or the day after. I'm not done here, yet. he pointed at the deceased in the cart. They know he's a mortitian and the poor souls need to be buried. Doing this will help him feeling less guilty, hopefully.
I will stay at Old Heaven. Take your rest and come over tomorrow. If y'all have some time to spare, there will be one or two things you can help me with. he said to the group. And than, to Timothy: Please, show me the way.

Detective Wolfe plays her part in the handing off of the miners to the watch, explaining the situation at the mine and particularly the shadow that got away! After that she nods farewell to Merienda and Daruk. Though they hadn't been with the group long it has been a long 24h. She makes her farewells to Lady Claudia as Daruk proposes to escort her home, glad to have made another noble contact. Speaking of which:

"I'd be delighted to join you Amara! If it's not too much of an imposition Lord Benedict? A bath and some good food is just what we need to put this day behind us! We'll all need to be well recuperated if we're going to help Issarel tomorrow."

Joshua will need to take that as a decline for now...

Crystal as you add your report to the other's that have been turned in the two town guard look at each other before turning back to you. "That would explain why a member of the Wilsen family is here. No doubt he and those with him are recon." one of the guards remarks. "Either way we will keep an eye out and send word to the surrounding towns. Honestly I have no idea whats going on as of late. Orges being spotted a few miles outside of town near that old fort, people going missing, and now this. Bad omens I warn you." the guard says saluting Crystal before she departs with the rest of you.

With accommodations in order for Daruk and Merienda to walk the Lady Claudia back to her home in the district known as Thessia the rest of you make your way towards the temple of the Lovers. It is a block away from the temple when Timothy points down the left street. "Gef and his family live down this way, well Gef did. Are you sure you don't want to drop the bodies off with the others before going to see his wife?" Timothy asks Joshua, making sure he wanted to see the woman first before leading away from the others.

Old Haven is a district not a place in case it wasn't clear. Yellow are named buildings, Red is districts, and black is the town name. It is the poorer side of town, New Haven being the up and coming place, while Thessia is where all the rich, nobles, merchants live.

For those of you who haven't seen the temple of the Lover's as of yet it is not exactly what one expects when they hear the words temple. The simple stone structure before you barely stands over two stories, with no columns or other such decoration on the outside. It seems simply like a square stone was plopped down and a door placed where one would expect a door to be. From the outside the only thing that gives it away as a temple is the symbol of the Lovers, a sunburst and moon both cut in half and seeming completing one another. Off to the side of the building you notice a small wooden fence and a chicken coup within said fence, as well as two sheep. Standing next to chicken coup seemingly collecting eggs is a woman with flowing red hair, an oddity in the Swordwatch empire, braided all the way down to her ankles and wearing a burlap sack for clothing. Her and the animals seem to be perfectly at peace with one another as a faint humming can be heard from this distance coming from where she is.

Stopping there this way if Joshua wants to go to the temple again he can or you can all get your first taste of the religion of the Lovers.

As you all make your way over to the red haired woman, Joshua knows as Sister Rosalind an immediate sense of peace falls over all of you as any thoughts of violence and harm seem to melt away. Looking up from collecting the eggs the woman smiles kindly as she looks to each of you. "Hello children how may I help you today?" she asks before seeing the carriage of dead that were properly taken care of by Joshua. "Oh my, I think I see why you are here. More gifts for the Mother than, I must thank you all for taking the time to return these people here to get a proper burial. It will no doubt help put their souls at rest as well as their families. Tell me do you have a list of their names?" She asks, looking to Joshua as she says so as she had seen him at the temple before praying and thus suspected he may have collected their names before coming here.

Once the names are give to Sister Rosalind she agrees to take the bodies off of your hands and give each of them the proper burial they deserved in the churches graveyard. Leaving the rest of you to either help her with the bodies, or return to the Golden M and rest up for the next days activities.

Amara bid farewell to sister Rosalind. Her choice of attire was certainly odd but she’d learned long ago not to let her feelings be known, at least not in public.

She returned to the big M and retired to her room, stripping out of her gear and taking a long hot bath, scrubbing the dirt from the road away. Then she changed into the sea-green dress she was more comfortable wearing, the sapphire earrings, and signet ring on her left hand.

She descended to the common room to join dinner with the others. After the adventure, she definitely wanted a few drinks as well.

The feeling of peace and calm wash over Issarel, and she drinks it in thirstily. The stress of the last few days (day!), have been such a burden, and the calmness is a welcome relief. She watches the chickens dance and play, and wonders if she could enjoy such a life, though the burlap is definitely not to her taste, to be still, to be at peace, to not have to worry constantly on HIM, and where he was going to torment her next...well, it was as good of a dream as any, and if the price was to wear a potato sack, it seemed worth it.

Still, there could be no peace now, not yet. He would be coming soon, cross that she had kept him waiting. Issarel shuddered at the thought and held herself tightly. "Be brave", she thought, "This time you need not face him alone..." but with the Enchanter, that strength could be turned to weakness.

Like Amara, Crystal heads back to her room to shower off the grime of the day. She doesn't yet trust her civilian fashion sense alongside Amara and Benedict, so she changes into a clean uniform, figuring that smart formal is better than risking appearing gauche. She is very much looking forward to an opportunity to go shopping for a new wardrobe with Amara, and laments that pressing business means that that will have to be delayed another day or two at least. Her dirty clothes she sends to the Laundry

"Good evening Amara," Crystal greets the lady as she comes downstairs, privately pleased to be the second down to dinner and therefore have a moment alone. "How are you holding up? Today got a little intense."

Crystal orders a small glass of white wine. Just one - she needs to sleep well and be clear headed in the morning.

Paying little head to those you judge lesser then you, you politely bid farewell to the woman Sister Rosalind leaving the dead in her care as you make a beeline back to the Golden M and ask Mitéra Iulia to have someone draw you a bath in your room. Honestly things had not gone as smoothly as many of your other missions you had done in service to the Emperor before and a few people had died because of not being able to use your full powers around all these strangers that would no doubt turn you in without a second thought. Two of them even quit, a quest given to them by their very own emperor they simply choose to walk away from.

This and countless other things wash through your mind as you cleanse yourself of the days events before changing into your sea-green dress, much more practical then walking around in armor all day after all. And so much more comfortable as the dress was made by the finest seamstress in the entire kingdom. Lastly replacing your signet ring and sapphire earrings you make your way downstairs to the dining hall where you can already spot Agimaex sitting at the table, a look of curiosity on his face as he sees you, expecting a report of some kind given how you and the others returned.

"It is always good to find something in life that brings one peace child. For instance I enjoy singing and taking care of the animals. What do you like to do that brings you joy?" Sister Rosalind asks gently as she holds one of the chickens in her hands and pets it gently before letting it go back to play with its friends.

Following Amara's lead you return to the Golden M and clean yourself from the days work. With no fancy clothes to wear you decide its best to wear what you know, something formal yet not gawdy as you put on your uniform and make your way downstairs. A few of the patrons turn their head when they see a guard in the tavern, however when they see no markings of the town on your clothing they begin to relax and go back to their business. You note that Agimaex is also down here, no doubt waiting for some kind of report, however he seems in no hurry to receive one as he isn't pushing Amara who was down here first to answer him, instead letting her sit wherever she chooses.

"I'm not on duty now, you can call me Crystal," she says, pulling out a chair with one hand as she holds her wine in the other. This would normally be an unforgivably forward way for a commoner from Crystal's background to address a noblewoman, but Crystal's accent is studiously affected from an up and coming district of Cor Justorum and her true origin would be hard to tell. Plus she judges that Lady Amara is not such a stickler for such things. Perhaps if she were sharing the table with Lord Benedict she'd have thought twice about foregoing the formalities.

"As I was saying, that was a rough first mission, even for some soldiers. There wasn't a lot of bloodshed where I was stationed at Viridi Plana. I was wondering how you're holding up?"

“Crystal,” Amara repeated, testing the name out, then she smiled, “it is a beautiful name.”

“In private, you may call me Amara,” she said, reciprocating as much as she could. To allow a commoner to address her by her given name in public would simply not be allowed.

Having finished almost all of her first glass, Amara signaled the barmaid for a refill.

“It’s my first time seeing people die like that,” Amara said, “the way the blood just pumped...”
She took a large sip of wine from her refilled glass. She left unsaid that more might have survived if she’d been able to use her powers to their fullest extent. She would have to tell the group at some point.

“It isn’t easy, but I keep reminding myself it is a but a minor thing in the service of the Emperor,” she said, “and that I remained uninjured while others were not so fortunate.”

“I can’t believe some of our group abandoned our task,” she said, “to be assigned something of such importance by the emperor himself... it is an honor bestowed upon but a few.”

“What about you, Crystal?” Amara asked, pausing at the name again, “how.. how are you coping?”

    Spoiler: Amara & Crystal
    Show
Agimaex turns and listens as Crystal explains how she felt after killing something for the very first time and he nods his head in understanding. "War is never easy Detective, and what we face now is an understatement. I am pleased however you had little problems in dealing with what was in the mines, though a word of caution. Never get used to killing, even the most foul being is alive and deserves a measure of respect. Even if they wouldn't show you the same courtesy." he explains, perhaps trying to teach you a lesson he learned to late in life, or simply preaching like a follower of the Lovers. Either way he agrees and follows both you and Lady Amara upstairs where he is debriefed.

When the debrief is done the old wizard sits back, drinking from a mug that seems to never empty. It's a few moments before he finally replies. "So if I have this right you set out as a group towards the mines after getting a tip from a devil of some sort claiming to be a representative of the True Ryl Aufein. He wishes to see the cult stopped for some unknown reason and you thus agreed to walk into this trap as you were told you would find your quarry there.

Along the road you came across an overturned wagon and bandits and dispatched of them quickly, admirable, though did you ever find out if it was the bandits or that beast that flipped the cart over? I am curious as from your description of the monster you fought inside the mines, the one not allied with the other devils, it's soundwave was very powerful."
    he points out before continuing.

"After that you followed the trail of a large monster which led up to the mines where you rescued a good amount of the miners, procured their supplies to stay alive, and tried to stop a ritual from taking place. Thankfully you were able to save Lady Claudia Trenus as it will get The Shrieking Violet Society and her husband off of my back. However you say something still came through the portal, no doubt it fled because the ritual wasn't complete and thus it wasn't at full power. Meaning the longer you wait the stronger it will become. I see now why some of you wish to abandon your mission, fear is a dangerous thing. I am glad some of you are braze enough to continue on however." he says taking out five bags and placing them on the table, one for each of you who choose to stay and continue the kings work. "Consider it hazard pay for a job well done. It may not be much, but its better then doing stuff for free. Sadly I have some news you may not like. It seems while you were away the rumors of orges is true, they have set up shop in an old fort to the east of here somewhere hidden in the foothills. It hasn't been used in a decade or so thankfully so no one has been injured yet." he explains to the two of you, letting it sink in.

It seems so many things are happening at once, the question is what to do first?

    Amara van Tannin

“Detective, a word in private?” Amara asked.

Amara led Crystal up to her chambers where she locked the door behind them. The room was dim, lit only by the sunlight filtering in through the closed curtains.

The young noble took a moment to collect her thoughts as she stood in front of the door.

“So... you know I’m a devoted citizen of the Empire, the fact I haven’t abandoned this mission should be proof of that,” she said.

    She took an unsteady breath.

“Well, I’m sure you thought it was odd that someone like myself would have been hand picked by his Excellency to take part in this... it’s because I’m, well... I have a secret,” she said.

“And after the cave I realized keeping my secret might endanger us... and the mission, and if someone died because of it or we failed our mission on behalf of the Emperor...” she said, “Well... I decided I had to tell you.”

She lifted her hand to about chest level, fingers slightly curled, and a ball of blue eldritch fire appeared there, flames licking a few inches above her fingers and casting eerie shadows but no heat.

Amara watched Crystal carefully for her reaction.

"Yes, that's pretty much how it went," Crystal confirms to the old wizard. "We never did determine exactly what flipped the cart, but unless it was a third party we've dealt with both the monster and the bandits so they at least won't trouble anyone else."

Before she can properly give the ogres full consideration though she finds herself called away. Crystal tilts her head curiously at Amara's request for a word in private, nodding her assent.

"Excuse us Lord Agimaex," Crystal apologises to their taskmaster as she stands to follow Amara. "We'll be back after we confer. This shouldn't take long."

Crystal follows Amara back to her chambers with an air of polite interest. Once inside behind the locked door she considers whether to take a seat or lean against a dresser, but as her host doesn't she adopts a casual parade rest in the middle of the small room with her hands clasped lightly behind her back. It wouldn't do to risk their tentative friendship for improprietousness a second time. Polite interest turns to sympathetic concern as she realises how nervous Amara is.

"It's ok Amara, you can tell me," she encourages as Amara raises her hand to her breast, remembering that Amara has given license to address her this way in private.

Crystal doesn't flinch or react when Amara conjures the small fireball. She watches it flicker for a few seconds and then catches Amara's eye.

"I'm glad you felt able to tell me," she says kindly.

"...but I kind of already knew." she adds with a guilty half-shrug before going on to explain.

"As you say, I knew there must have been a reason for The Emperor's selections and you weren't obviously a fighting or investigative type. To begin with I thought maybe you might be here to help with dealings with the local nobility, but you weren't the only noble in the selection and Aginaex could help grease those lines of enquiry if we really needed it. And the Emperor had sent us other magic users... So yes, I did suspect you were holding out on us!" Crystal says with a small laugh. But for the first time a little reticence comes over her and she glances aside as she continues.

"But I've known for sure since the mine. Even though you didn't... It's... kind of hard to explain, but since defeating their shaman I've felt an... awakening. I think I may have some power too. I don't yet fully understand, but basically I can sense when arcane magic users are nearby. You didn't have to cast a spell for me to know, and I don't think it can be hidden from me," she explains apologetically.

"Still. I'm glad you told me and not in extremis! Your secret is safe with me."

Embarrassing confessions over, a new mood comes over Crystal.

"So!" she says with a playful head tilt. "What can you do with it?" she asks, looking once more at the tiny fireball.

    Lady Amara

“Oh, well,” Amara said, letting the fire douse itself.

Honestly she’d expected more of a reaction.

“That’s good then, at least it’s not such a surprise,” she said, “ and thank you for keeping the secret; it would be a problem if that ever got out to the general public. I wonder if anyone else can sense magic like you can? It’s no wonder the Emperor chose you for this task...”

She breathed a sigh of relief. At least she didn’t have to run for her life. As if a dam burst, words flowed out of Amara quickly, now she had someone to confide in.

“I have a number of... gifts? I guess you’d call them,” Amara said, “I can walk though the thickest undergrowth without it snagging on my clothing. I can see in the dark, and I can see magic, and invisible things. That’s why I didn’t need a torch in the mine.”

“It also makes me extra persuasive,” Amara said, “Don’t get me wrong, I’m pretty convincing on my own, but the gifts make it even more so.”

She ran a hand down her forearm.

“Even though it looks soft, my skin is magically protected; if a blade sneaks through, it might not even harm me. I can bring a swarm of little critters to attack things too.”

She conjured the eldritch fire again, the blue light reflected in her eyes.

“The magic fire isn’t really a flame. I’m not entirely sure what it is, but I can toss it at things and hurt them, or break them,” she said, “or, I can do this.”

The eldritch fire took shape as a solid beam of roiling blue fire, long enough to keep a swordsman at bay.

“And it never runs out,” Amara said, “I mean, until my arm gets tired I guess.”

The magical blade vanished, leaving the room in near darkness again.

“So... what do you think?” Amara asked hesitantly.

"I think that's going to be really useful Amara," Crystal says, genuinely impressed.

"And I'm sure the Emperor thinks so too. Anyway. We've probably kept Agimaex waiting longer than we should," she says, gesturing back to the door.

I don't really have anything more to add. Shall we end the scene and return to take 2?

    Yes, probably a good idea.
