That's a very good question. I guess I would agree with those who say it's an exemplary person defined by altruisim, self-sacrifice, wisdom, kind heart and courage. Thinkers like C.G. Jung, Jospeph Campbell and Jordan Peterson (people who discussed the archetypal hero myth structure that's recurring across a lot of different cultures) defined the hero as that which mediates between polar opposites of known and the unknown, conscious and the unconscious parts of the psyche, which are symbolically expressed in art, mythology and religion as the everyday realm and supernatural realm, the world of spirits and gods which is full of mortal danger and great opportunities for growth at the same time.

That's a tricky question, someone's hero might be someone else's villain. I guess to me a hero would be someone who sacrifices themselves for the safety and lives of others.
