"Ouch!" Lyna exclaims, jumping away, as spreading fire licks her incautiously extended hand. With people gradually moving out from the hall now, she decides to focus her attention on the mischievous imp - last thing they need now is more fire, appearing al over the room... concentrating, Lyna extends her hand - and a burst of brilliant white light bursts from the tips of her fingers towards the mephit... well, in the rough direction of the methit, more precisely. To be honest, it's the first time in her life Lyna tried to use her magic to harm anyone... Spoiler Show 1: Move 3 squares straight down 2,3: cast Divine Lance. "Think you can run away, do you?!" Nero growls, entirely fed up with the flame creature. "Well you've still got a thing or two to learn, Too bad you'll be snuffed out at the end of the lesson."

He scrambles up the stairs after the beastie, leaning into his weighted walking stick with another two-handed swing

Frustrated and concerned at how hardy the little elemental seemed to be, Em gave up trying to blast the creature from range and rushed in, drawing her sword and striking at the fiery little imp as she does, the flames licking at her side all the while. "The fire is getting worse! We need to get everyone out!"

"Yeek!" The blast of searing hot air that accompanied the mini molten monstrosity came with a distinct scent of crisped hair, the source of which was found to be, surprise surprise, the clothes and hair of approximately everyone who had dove out of the way of the thing.

"Can ya'll please leave off antagonizing that thing any further and help?!"
Cyrene's breathing was becoming laboured from the heat,smoke, and effort of half-push half-rolling a corpulently unconscious constituent out of the aisle. She momentarily considered leaving them there, but, reasoning that they may pose the next attractively flammable target, persisted on.
"If your teaching method involves firsthand demonstrating the ignition point of human flesh, kindly do not make us your captive audience!"

Nero's attack strikes home, leaving a flaming gash across its chest that makes the creature whelp and hiss pain, only for it to turn around and lunge forward in another attempt to take a gash out of his flesh in response. When Emethelein approaches, however, the creature dodges cleanly out of the poorly placed way and strikes back at her, quickly taking stock and retreating past her into the fire near the doorway to lick its wounds, even as the flame cauterizes and knits together the gash that the nobleman left on it moments before.

Cyrene's help does not go unnoticed, with the various villagers being pulled out of their reveries or given the figurative push to get up and out the doorway, many offering pleas of thanks even as they push through the doorway. Finally reaching the girl, Trini grabs her by the arm and points at the three still embroiled in the combat, coughing even as the gnome struggles to shout out "You have to help them, they're going to get caught up in that fire if they don't get away from the doorway!"

"Coward!" Nero snarls at the retreating beastie. "One decent wallop and you run to cower in your security blanket!" He steps back from the flame, doing his best not to wince at the singed hair and stinging furrows where the creature had raked him. "Well fine. If you're rather be skewered than tenderized, so be it."

Drawing back from the flame, he hooks his walking stick on his belt and slips the knot holding his crossbow to his bag.

"I-um-" Cyrene bit back a smart remark as she remembered the diminutive person's elevated status.

She released the quickdraw of the large hunting crossbow hanging at her side "I don't usually do this from where my prey can reach me..." Engaged the string and locked back the lever "Or where they can see me..." Set the bolt, then gingerly lifted it level "...Through pitched combat..." And depressed the metal trigger-"Ow!"

The bolt sailed merrily through the air and into the last window that had not yet shattered from the heat, showering everyone nearby with a spray of sparkling shrapnel.

"...In the middle of a house fire."

"Don't worry, Missis Spizzlebrig!" Lyna exclaims, conjuring another bolt of light... and hoping really hard this one wo'nt go astray, "we'll take care of the creature, you concentrate on getting people out!" And with that, she releases the magical projectile... closer to her target then the last time, but still not nerly close enough. Spoiler: OOC Show 1,2: Cast Divine Lance (Good): attack (1d20+7)[13], damage (1d4+4)[7] 3: Stride 2 right, 1 up towards Nero

Wincing as the fire laps at her arms and legs, singeing her, Emethelein retreats from the flames as the mephit does the opposite. Not insane enough to charge into the fire, she hops back to buy herself some breathing room even as she starts tracing runic symbols in the air. "Come on, come on, we have to hurry and stop this thing before it spreads the fire too fast!"

The elf may not have a crossbow or flame retardant clothing, but she was a mage, and while it was no lightning bolt, she could still fire a jolt of electricity that would hopefully put a stop to the mephit...she just had to hope she could hit it through the smoke and flame!

The creature finishes its flight and lands on the raised counter behind the tables, resting up against the wall with an arm and seeming to pant heavily at the exertion that it's being put through. This moment of respite, however, is short lived as a crossbow bolt lands mere inches from its face, followed directly by an arc of electricity that hits that somehow hits the metallic head of that projectile, still partially sticking out of the wall, instead of the mephit itself.

It seems it has taken these actions to be luck, as by the time the young sorceress throws a shining divine lance towards the creature it seemed to have not only recovered, but now stands there dancing and making vulgar gestures towards the combatants and all the spectators in the room.

Distracted as they are by the fire and the creature that brought it about has the quad, sturdy as they are, standing in the middle of what is now a smoke filled room - enough so that, instead of being able to duck down slightly to avoid the billowing black and grey hazard, without taking special precautions they now breathe in the malodorous and choking gas.

"Well...maybe *cough* discretion and valor and all." Nero chokes out. Between the miasmic atmosphere and the creature's shear stubborn endurance, the fight was losing it savor. In fact, the outside was beginning to look rather good. He begins pushing has way towards the exit, pausing only to loose a Parthian shot on the way.

Lyna HP 13/15 AC 16

Watching Nero finally nail the mephit with a bolt, it seems, gives Lyna a flash of inspiration - or maybe it's the sounds of coughing coming from all around, together with her finding it hard to breath, drive her into enough of desperation... it's hard to say for sure what's the cause, but the results seems to be obvious. "Please", the young sorceress pleads as she raises her staff again, "please, let it all stop!" And it appears that whatever celestial being gifted her with magic in the first place is listening today, as the bolt of radiant force strikes the imp dead center, smashing it against the wall. "Out! Everyone, get out!" she calls, turning to run herself, "The fire is spreading!" Spoiler: OOC Show 1,2: Cast Divine Lance. 25 to hit (rolled in OOC), (1d4+4)[6] Good damage 3: Stride 5 straight south

Mephit dead, encounter time ended.

The mephit was in the middle of a particularly insulting maneuver involving bending over away from the Baron when his bolt struck nearby, prompting the creature to turn and laugh at the man just in time for Lyna's bolt of light to strike it squarely in the face. One worried squeak later, and the poor creature exploded in a burst of confetti-like flame and light, leaving the party and those still within to shuffle on out the door while the room continued to fill.

Smoke had managed to fill the space all the way to the floor, billowing out of the open southern doorway and hall when Cyrene, of all people, dragged the final - now unconscious - civilian out of the space. Nearby, Greta counts those by the doorway, then spins and looks out across the square where everyone else that was gathered. Relief washed over her for a moment, only for it to give immediately back in to panic as she spun and called out, "Has anyone seen Calmont? The bookseller's apprentice! He was inside earlier!"

One of the civilians, who you would recognize as the young Chelish boy that warned the room about the fire some minutes ago, replies with a cough and a nervous glance back towards the, replied. "I - I saw him. He's the one that set the fires." Nearby, one of the uniformed guards adds, "And one of the clerks said he saw the lad summoning the demon that attacked us."

"That, at least, answers the question of the who," the woman practically breathed out, wiping one hand down her now soot and sweat-covered face. "Does anyone know where he ran off to?" Crickets and the crackling sounds of fire, now being actively fought as the civilians who weren't trapped inside arrive to help, fill the space.

"Is that everyone? That's everyone, right?" Lyna asks, as the last of the townsfolk gets guided through the doors, "Please... don't go away, everyone, if you think you might've been burned... just... wait a moment..." Raising her staff high above her head, she calls forth to the radiance within her, shining it all around to the gathered townsfolk... before, adrenaline that kept her going through the fire and the battle with the mephit gives up and Lyna, her legs suddenly trembling, falls to her knees, still clinging to the staff. Spoiler: OOC Show Casting 3-action version of Heal: everyone living in 30-feet radius is healed for (1d8)[5] hp

Nero coughs out smokey phlegm through his handkerchief once he's finally outside, among the last to exit if only because he had more interest in ensuring the wretched little mephit's demise than avoiding the conflagration. "Looks like everyone to me. You were the last one inside that I saw. Not that I was counting." He answers Lyna.

When the healing glow washes over him, it nods appreciatively. His skin was certainly less blistered and weepy, but his singed sleeve would require an actual tailor's attention. Regrettable. No, unacceptable. Someone would have to pay for that, and he very much doubted they'd find gold on the trans-dimensional arsonist's corpse when the fire burned out.

"Calmont?" Who is this Calmont?! He has much to answer for!" Nero roars.

Silently berating herself for the constant missed attacks and failures to actually be heroic when the town needed it, since stepping up didn't matter if you couldn't follow through and just burn yourself for trying, Em was one of the last of the party to escape the blaze before Cyrene and was just standing beside Lyna for the moment. After the young girl called for everyone to stay so that she could tend the injured though, the elf saw her trembling legs and snapped out of her own disappointment to smile and give Lyna a reassuring pat on the shoulder before turning to look at Greta as the revelation of who started the flames was made.

Nodding in agreement with Nero, she finally speaks up, "It doesn't really matter who he is, but we can't let this go unpunished, he almost killed everyone! Do you know where he might've gone?" Though given he was apparently the bookseller's apprentice, Em was pretty sure she'd want to talk to the bookseller before trying to blindly track down the arsonist.
