"Everything is good over here Facet. Carry on with the bomb." Of course that was a blatant lie but he didn't want here getting distracted or worse dropping her barrier.

Arthropod observes them as they fight KC, when hearing Acula’s monologue distracts him.

You seem to be fighting them off pretty well now. But I think I can try something.

He raises his hand as if he was activating some special move and insects fly around the room. However, instead of attacking the sharks, they fly and crawl into the speakers and start eating random wires. When the speakers are disabled and the monologue stops, he taps his head in an overacted gesture of confusion.

Wait, Acula isn’t talking anymore? He was in the middle of making a point too. I guess the rest of our team got to him while we were fighting all of you.

    Hm. Maybe more obvious.

I mean, you guys are his minions, he probably needs you to fight. It’s too bad that you’re here fighting us instead.

Facet takes Foreigner at his word, as she's too focused on disabling the bomb to actually look up to see if what he's saying is true or not. Though even if she wasn't, she doesn't really know what to expect from him well enough yet to know when he's withholding the truth or why.

Disable a Bomb: Roll +Superior. On a hit, the bomb isn't a threat any more. On a 10+, take +1 Ongoing to Disable a Bomb as you discover a vulnerability in Acula's manufacture. On a Miss, something went wrong. The GM will tell you what.

It was a close call with that last engagement to be sure. The shark was to quick for his rays to hit and that was all Foreigner had thought to use up until now. He needed to pull out a new technique, and the one he had in mind would work but he was not confident in the execution having never done it before. Time for the flash and grab. Pulling a quick pose and thrusting his right hand toward the sharks eyes he attempted to quickly blind the shark, giving the opportunity to engage properly even if it would mean breaking the pose.

A difficult enemy required difficult technique, one that Foreigner didn't have. He broke the pose too early with only a flicker of light in his palm, he had also begun moving in already so he could feel the breath of the shadow shark before he could realize his mistake. Foreigner tried to think of some sort of quip or line to say in this situation but the string of constant failures feed into his insecurities even more. His posture crumbled in the face of his enemy.

KC tilts his head slightly at the statement. "Well, not exactly," he adds, pointing with one finger to the shark-men, still menacingly close.

Maria looked back at the giant, remarkably peaceful murder birds, and lowered the shotgun full of birdshot she'd created with a vaguely nonplussed expression.
"Well, the bomb here is dealt with, though there's not much to recover... There's a few mutant albatrosses, or whatever, but they're, well. They aren't attacking or anything, so I guess I'll just. Leave them here to deal with later."
With a faint feeling of disappointment, she called another gun into existence and began heading for the security room - presumably where the undead doctor lurked. She shut the door on the way out, and wedged an floor post through the handles so the birds couldn't get out.

She hoped they didn't eat the penguins.

Bombs and Ninjas: Facet and Foreigner
Facet has little trouble with the bomb. To be totally honest, it's a pretty simple mechanism. Just a pressurized metal tank, presumably full of Acula's gas, a tiny brick of Semtex, a digital timer and a little receiver to activate the timer that looks like it was ripped out of an old cell phone. Nonpareil wouldn't be caught dead using something cobbled together from off-the-shelf parts like this. Admittedly, it's probably good enough to do the job, but nothing about this bomb was terribly difficult to deal with. The hardest part was getting the explosive's casing open; after that, it was a simple matter of snipping a couple of wires and removing the power source for the detonator. Facet now has enough plastic explosive to put a decent hole in a wall, a tank of gas and a bunch of junk electronics. Easy.

Foreigner doesn't have it nearly as easy. His plans fall apart. His attack fails. He is, simply put, hopelessly outmatched on his own against the black-robed figure. The handsome alien stumbles backwards after his opponent effortlessly counters his strike, off-balance, and a sword strikes forward in a fluid, gleaming arc...

Fortunately for Foreigner, his fall leaves him far enough away to avoid a potentially lethal strike. Unfortunately for his shirt, it's just a little bit closer. The slash draws a thin cut across Foreigner's chest, just deep enough to draw blood, and cut a huge tear in his shirt. What the slash didn't do, the blood does. The shirt's ruined. Done. Fixing it would be impossible. And that hurt, too. Could this day get any worse?

Facet turns around, finished with the bomb, to find a black-shrouded figure standing over Foreigner's fallen form, blood on its sword. Acula's voice, blessedly silent for quite a while, returns. "Hmm. Do not kill him, Ninja. Bring down ze girl and bring zem both to me. Zey vill zuffer for zheir inzults."

Doesn't he have some nerve, assuming you're both already finished.

Out of the Frying Pan: Kid Collier and Arthropod
Arthropod's plan is... Far from a massive success. Turns out that ants aren't super fast, and even if they were there are quite a few speakers in the room and they aren't built into the wall. Ten seconds in, it quickly becomes apparent that taking down the speaker system... Really isn't working. Acula's voice comes over just fine. "Not zpeaking? Hardly. I zhink I'm done vith you two. Interesting zhings elsevhere. Have fun battling ze Man-Zharks."

Said humanoids show no signs of being deterred, closing in on the two heroes menacingly... But where cunning failed, brute force prevails. Kid Collier is more than strong enough to go toe-to-toe with these puffed-up fish-men, and with momentum and surprise on his side even superior numbers aren't enough. He barrels through, sending two opponents stumbling backwards as they try to bar his path, clearing a way for Arthropod to follow through. Thirty seconds or so of running later, they're way behind you and not even close to catching up. Those guys aren't going to stop you, wherever you plan to go next.

You are now free to proceed elsewhere in the aquarium. Where would you like to head next?

    Cutting to the Chase: Maria
Leaving the large, scary-looking mutant birds to... Whatever they're doing, you use the map and a bit of intuition to head to what you hope is the security office. There's what appears to be a decent-sized area near the entry that isn't open to the public, so you head there. A few strategic uses of an eight-gauge shotgun loaded with breaching rounds make quick work of a couple of doors to get behind the ticket counter and into a section that looks pretty promising. One door leads to a break room; useless. Another into what looks like an office, with a big desk and a bunch of filing cabinets. Probably useless. The last is more heavily reinforced, steel instead of wood, and helpfully marked with bold red letters reading Security. That's probably the one you're looking for. Fortunately, it's already open. Handy, since there's no good way to get through a reinforced steel door like that without causing a good bit of damage. The fact that the thing's pretty heavily dented, and looks disturbingly like someone punched it until it was so bent the lock didn't work any more is less so.

Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, there's nobody in here. Just a couple of big computers, a big monitor that's turned off on one wall, a desk that's been tossed into a corner and some weird-looking machines in the middle of the room, connected by wires to the big computers and a couple of plug-ins in the wall. Acula, it would seem, isn't here. Though the damage, and whatever those machines are, indicates he probably was at some point.

... If he isn't here, where is he?

Facet tries to do something tricky to keep the monster's attention on her and frustrate it enough to give Foreigner the opportunity to rally. She aims for throwing up a panel between her and her attacker just before his attack repeatedly. Unfortunately since she wasn't paying attention to the fighting earlier, she's completely unprepared for just how fast they are.

"Theres no need to step in Facet." Foreigner slowly rose from the ground, leaving his head facing down. Snapping his head foward to face the ninja directly, making a strong pose and smiling. "As you can see I'm completely unharmed." Of course Foreigner was actually crying inside, sure the cut hurt. But he put on his favourite tank top to meet the Guardians and now it looked like it's been through alien Burning Man. Maybe if his facade of confidence his health worked the ninja would be staggered enough for himself and Facet to get away. After all his pants were still savable.

    Hmm.

Where was the vamp, indeed? Well, she'd just have to find him in a minute. She gave a quick glance over the security camera feeds. Ah, someone had shot out a bunch-- oh yeah, that had been her.

Maria shrugged and took a closer look at the device in the middle of the room. The jammer, perhaps? If satisfied it wasn't booby-trapped, the munitions Maiden simply reached down and pulled out the wires connecting the cobbled-together machines to the wall and computers.

"Hello?" she tried over the comms. "Can you hear me now, Lincoln?"

Arthropod looks in dismay as the speakers continue to work and throws his hands up in annoyance when the solution seems to have been brute force.

When KC suggests where to go next, Arthropod contradicts him withought thinking. Did Kid Collier think he was the leader now too?

Maria has things in hand? From the sound of it, she’s on her own and a bomb just went off. This time it might have been fine but I don’t want a member of our team to be alone when something else goes wrong.

He thinks the experienced hero probably won’t listen to him so as soon as Arthropod sees a bend in the corridor he turns to run down it, trying to head to where he thinks Maria was headed.

You pull out all the wires connected to anything in the room, leaving a couple of strange machines sitting in the middle of the room. By the time you're finished, the whirring noises they were making fade away (probably a result of pulling the power plug from the outlet). Unfortunately, Honest Abe doesn't respond when you broadcast on your communicator, and the faint buzzing when you try to listen for a response indicates that the jammer is still active. You obviously did something, but whatever of Acula's toys you just disabled it wasn't what he was using to jam your communications.

On the plus side, the blank screens on the wall start to light up again, showing the views from the remaining security cameras in the building, so you might be able to figure out how your teammates are doing using those. A lot of the screens just show static, probably as a result of the cameras you destroyed, but you can see a fair chunk of the aquarium.

What's the next stage in your plan?

Deep Sea Trouble: Facet, Foreigner and Kid Collier
The shark ninja darts towards Facet, far faster than she'd anticipated, and manages to get between the armoured heroine and her projected barrier, leaving a clear path to strike. His sword flashes in another deadly arc, but Foreigner's timely distraction buys just enough time for Facet to get out of the way. Unfortunately, this does leave her cornered by the dark, sword-wielding figure, but better that than run through with a sword.

Acula wastes no opportunity to taunt you. "Hah. You have no chance against ze deadly Lantern Ninja! You might az vell zhust <kkksssht>"

His voice dissolves into static, and then the PA system goes silent. Huh. Guess somebody must have shut him up.

Kid Collier arrives on the scene just in time to hear the Doctor's voice cut out. You can see Facet, cornered by a shadowy figure with a sword in hand, while a clearly injured Foreigner stands on the other side of the room. How do you proceed?

    Welcome to the Jungle: Arthropod
You planned to find Maria and team up with her, but... You must have taken a wrong turn along the way. You were certain this route would take you to the main entrance, but you walked through a door and found yourself in a hot, humid room filled with jungle foliage, a winding path and several bridges marking the way through what appears to be a tropical rainforest with a flowing river meandering through it. Large, colourful fish swim through the waters around you, while a diverse array of birds rest in trees or flap through the areas between them. You seem to have wandered into the Amazon Rainforest exhibit by accident. Before you have time to wonder where you went wrong, a sultry voice emerges from ahead, notable for its slight accent and noticeable lisp.

"Ah, you musst be one of the heroes the Doktor wass yelling about earlier. Good afternoon. My name is Anasstassia, but I prefer Anya."

The person belonging to the voice is a tall, slender woman wearing a fairly small pair of shorts and a low-cut tank top, making her less than human features perfectly clear. Her body is covered with fine scales, not unlike a snake's, and she has no hair. Her eyes have clear slitted pupils, and her mouth betrays no trace of teeth (which is probably why she has the lisp), but she's clearly in excellent shape judging from her sculpted abdomen and the rippling muscles clearly visible beneath her skin as she moves. She smiles at you, seemingly unhindered by whatever transformation she's been through. "What should I call you?"

Huh. The other mutants you've encountered attacked on sight. This one seems more inclined to talk. If she's here, the last bomb probably can't be far, though.

Facet very intentionally doesn't respond to Foreigner at all as she's pretty annoyed that he just ran away and left her behind like that. But she reminded herself to not let herself get angry and distracted as that could be very dangerous in this situation and might damage the team's perception of her which maybe was already not the best given her background.

Instead she just nods appreciatively to Kid Collier (though all he sees is a slight bob from a big gem/helmet) and says, "Thanks." as she circles around the shark ninja whatever thing and gives it a vicious hand chop to the shoulder and as it grip loosens pries the sword from its hand. She doesn't really think a sword goes with her ensemble, but it's better in her hands than the hands of their opponent.

Arthropod looks confused, this isn’t the place he expected to be in and this isn’t the person he expected to meet. Unless the mutation gas had some seriously major effects on Maria, he wasn’t where he intended to be. He was raised to be polite, though, so he introduced himself to the serpentine woman.

”Nice to meet you Anya, I go by Arthropod. I don’t really have a nickname yet, so calling me Arthropod is fine. I am in fact ‘one of those heroes’ and I assume you’re one of the good doctor’s minions.”

He tried to keep the snakeperson talking, while he subtly had his insects search for any trap the snake woman was planning, or maybe the location of the bomb. He had a suspicious feeling in the back of his head that something was about to go wrong, and he swore he recognized Anya’s name from somewhere.

”You seem a lot more... friendly... than the shark people who threw me into a ceiling earlier.”

As he talked, he was somewhat distracted by the comms. He wanted to ask Maria how she was doing and what was happening with the cameras, and maybe ask Foreigner to come serve as backup, but Anya might not take either of those things very well. Besides, the team was probably better off with him MIA anyways.

Darkness Encroaches: Facet and Kid Collier
Between Kid Collier's towel-based grapple and Facet's follow-through, the ninja appears to be caught flat-footed. With a practiced strike, Facet manages to disarm him before he shakes free of KC's grab, leaving you in a two-on-one fight with a weaponless ninja... Though a problem immediately begins to rear its head as the shadows start to lengthen. Right. Foreigner was the one lighting up the room, and without his impressive posing the pitch darkness of the area begins to rapidly reassert itself, leaving you nearly blind. The ninja shark raises one hand up in front of its face... Then seems to light up in a brilliant flash of multicoloured light, blinding you the rest of the way. By the time you blink the afterimages out of your eyes nothing remains but darkness, the faint glow of the stairway out of the exhibit off in the distance the only thing visible.

Looks like the ninja must have ran away. You have his sword, though, and the bomb's been dealt with. Perhaps it's time to keep moving? Your ten minute time limit is rapidly running out.

    State of Surveillance: Maria
Many of the camera views around the aquarium simply show static. Those are probably the ones you broke, and looking at the labels on them backs that up. It doesn't take you long to identify the bomb in the Tropical Oceans exhibit, lying in plain view surrounded by a pile of slightly bent metal that used to be a catwalk. The Deep Sea exhibits cameras clearly have some sort of nightvision function, because you can spot the remnants of the bomb there as well, catching the flash of bright light that marks the end of Facet and KC's battle with some sort of hooded figure with a sword. Accounting for the bomb you dealt with yourself, that leaves the one in the Amazon Rainforest display of those you're aware of, and it isn't too hard to spot either. A serpentine woman stands between it and Arthropod, and it's pretty much just around the corner from him. For some reason he seems to be just talking to her, though, not fighting at all.

Interestingly, one bank of cameras doesn't seem to be quite like the rest. The cameras for the Sharks exhibit, a long glass corridor through a huge tank filled with sharks of all different sizes, seem to be blacked out for some reason.

    Welcome to the Jungle: Arthropod
The serpentine woman gives a short chuckle. "Ah, yess. The Mansharks aren't very bright. And very loyal to the Doktor. Not likely to talk to you. Much more likely to punch firsst, probably won't assk questions." She takes a step forwards, but doesn't actually settle into a fighting stance or anything else like that. "I'm actually hoping to move here, you ssee. Nice and warm even in winter, unlike home. Being cold-blooded hass ssome drawbackss. Trying to figure out if it's better to do it with a henchman program or ssign up for a different visa. I don't suppose you'd be willing to help me out with that after thiss whole thing finishess? Maybe I can use you as a reference? I don't know any Americanss and I don't trust strangers on the internet." She gives you a big, slightly insincere smile. Is it because she's trying to trick you, or because she's trying to butter you up? Hard to tell.

Fortunately, this gives your insectoid minions plenty of time to scout the area. You locate the bomb before long, sitting right beside a bench just around the corner from where Anya is standing talking to you. You also notice a fire extinguisher, helpfully posted not too far away from you. If she really is cold-blooded like she says, giving her a good spray of ice-cold CO2 would probably cause her all kinds of problems if the situation gets violent. Surprisingly, she seems to be alone in here... Relatively speaking. There are also a bunch of birds, fish in the water and even a few non-humanoid snakes lounging around in the trees. It's not terribly clear what sort of trap she could be planning on springing, if that is her intention.

More support flooded in from home through Alien social media, Foreigner felt better about himself. He still felt regret for leaving Facet behind but the first step to making it up to her would be to stop moping around and get back into the action. Floating up to his feet he chimed in on the comms, "Alright I'm good to go Maria whats your location? I haven't heard a reply from Arthropod so we should check up on him at some point."

Arthropod smiles as Anya explains her intentions. He had to sit through several town council meetings on the topic of henchperson immigration a few years ago, so he was somewhat familiar with the law.

”The Hench program is a pretty easy one to get into, and I think I can be a good reference. All you really need for it, though, is a sponsoring villain and to take the safety course. I would suggest looking for other options though. The henchman visa has a few major downsides... ”

While the legal talk kept the snake-woman distracted, there was a slow rolling sound as Arthropod’s bug army, bolstered by any insects that had moved into the warm jungle exhibit, slowly rolled the fire extinguisher towards him. He tried to maintain eye contact and talk loud enough to keep Anya from noticing this until it was too late.

”...and it means getting a job outside of the hero-villain industry will be a lot harder. And of course there’s the obvious downside of the henchman career, regular defeat at the hands of the heroes. Sorry about this. ”

Once the pin was removed, Arthropod pointed the fire extinguisher at her and trying to cool her down before she had time to react. As he ran towards the bomb, he felt a twinge of guilt.

”I wasn’t lying about being a reference though, I’d be happy to talk once these bombs are dealt with. ”

"OK!" the cheerful mahou shojou chirped. "So the only bomb currently left is the one Arthro is dealing with in the jungle exhibit, with a snakey lady. He seems to be doing pretty ok! But if one of you wanted to go help him, that'd probably work out.

Meanwhile, the sharks exhibit is oddly suspicious! None of the cameras are working there at all... I want to go and check it out. I could meet up with some of you there. Got any preferences?"
Without waiting for a reply, the enthusiastic girl kept talking.

"Oh, and let me know if you see any shadowy figures born of negative emotions! I've already encountered them here once. Dealing with them is kind of my thing. It'd surprise me if we saw any more of them - I normally would have sensed if they were building up, but, you know. Be careful!"
    And the far stars cried, and the planets yearned;
But no man may know, for she'll ne'er return.

KC nods as he listens to Maria's report. He isn't sure if the ninja would count as one of those spirit types, but he figures he can ask her later.

"Facet, how about you and Foreigner go back up Arhtropod? Maria, I'll meet you at the shark tunnel thingy," he suggests, looking to Facet for a confirmation.

Facet gave an affirmative nod at the suggestion of keeping the sword as a trophy before more important matters cut in.

"Alright." she replies to Kid Collier. She doesn't really agree that it's best to send three to a known threat and two to an unknown one, but she trusts his judgement enough to go along without questioning it right now.
"Though he does have a head start on me." she grumbles under her breath to herself.

Foreigner spends no time hanging around before heading toward Arthropods location. He was a bit slower than he would have liked due to the wound, much so that Facet caught up to him before they reached the location. Immediately this caused him to fake perfect health and regain heroic posture, he didn't want to worry anyone that wasn't what heroes did. "I'll make it up to you later, it's time to be heroes now. Let's get this down and get back to M4 and KC as soon as we can."

Anya's fake smile seems to turn into a real one over the course of your conversation, and when you finish talking she immediately launches into a response, looking down to grab something from her pocket as she does so... Leaving her entirely blindsided by your attack. "Oh, excellent! I'm sso glad I ran into you! Lissten..." She gets a face full of freezing cold foam before she can finish the sentence, and raises her arms in a futile attempt to defend herself. A few seconds later, the reptilian woman is nearly entirely covered in freezing fluid, and stumbles back in shock, letting out what are probably a stream of curses in what might be Russian, interspersed with the occasional English expletive. Not long after she stumbles into the side of the bridge she was standing on and then, possibly on purpose, topples over the railing and into the running water below. Interestingly, she seems to have dropped a piece of paper at some point during the attack, leaving it resting near where she was standing on the bridge.

A few moments later, Foreigner announces his arrival with a brilliant flash of light, which likely would have blinded any further threats... If there were any. Facet follows a few moments later, emerging onto a scene with no obvious threats. A lisping voice calls out faintly from the reptilian woman floating limply in the water. "Ow. Sso cold... I'll just... Sstay in the water for a while. Ugh."

With no further distractions, it's not too hard to spot the bomb in the centre of the rainforest exhibit, sitting right on top of a bench near the artificial river that runs through the exhibit hall. Interestingly, a brightly-coloured bird sits on top of the large bomb canister, unconcerned with the situation around it.

The Doctor is... In: Kid Collier and Maria
Kid Collier and Maria meet up on the way to the shark exhibit, tackling the last bit of distance together. It becomes apparent even before you get to the exhibit that you must be approaching your target, though, because you can hear the unmistakable, and loud, voice of Dr. Acula coming from around the corner. "Bah. Zat is enough. Get back to ze base. Ze Culaveks and I vill buy time. Ve have vhat ve came for, even if it vasn't perfect." It sounds like he must be talking to someone, and he doesn't seem to know that you're here. Perhaps you can take advantage of the element of surprise? Or maybe he's trying to lay a trap for you. What's the play?

A Word in your Ear: Everyone
With a staticky crackle, the entire team's earpiece communicators buzz to life, your first message in a while from the outside world in the form of Ferriqueen's machine-generated speech. "Bah. This would have been much easier if they'd bothered to modulate the communication frequency themselves. I thought Nonpareil's child was supposed to be decent with technology."

Before anyone else has a chance to react to the armoured hero's criticisms, another voice breaks in. "Junior Guardians, this is Abe. Can you hear me? We were able to deal with the jamming on our end. What is your situation?"
