Alastor was shocked. While he had been waiting for some kind of report from Mikolt, she had instead choosen to let loose a volley of arrows. This was perhaps the first time in their time travelling together that Mikolt had taken direct action on her own accord outside of direct threats against the circus. Perhaps a good reminder as to why normally he does the talking, even if it is against strange spider creatures...

"There is no ignoring them anymore" he simply said, and he directed Cyzar to be in front of him and Piko.

Keda grasps his new bow and notches an arrow to the string. "They seem more interested in defending their kill than in aggressively attacking all that approaches. We might still be able to skirt around them, provided that we make no moves towards their prize?"

Still maintaining his distance, Keda tests this theory by beginning to move slightly further along the road, but also making it clear that he is circling away from the fallen beast.

Whatever Keda's speculation - and he did manage to stalk quietly up a small slope that had a decent possibility of skirting around the small dell where the spiders were - it was drowned out by a chittering of pain as Mikolt's arrow thunked into spiderflesh, and the creatures spun to regard her. The circus, having moved up to fighting distance, had at least a couple of seconds to consider their options...

Mikolt's first arrow hits, the second misses. And it's now become a fight.

Here's how the initiative count came out:
    Arendi, Keda
    Monsters
    Alastor/Cyzar/Aeric, Chatty, Mikolt, Vokon

A few other important details, though.
    - All 4 phase spiders are flatfooted with respect to everyone except Mikolt, since she's successfully distracted them, at least for a moment. This isn't a surprise round, but there might be a chance for people to move unnoticed if they see fit to do so.
    - Phase Spiders 1 and 4 draw some cover from the sheer bulk of the bulette's corpse, which as you can see is in completely realistic and unobtrusive detail at grid references G9-I13. The corpse can be taken to be 10 feet high, so it would accordingly block line of sight or line of effect depending where you are.
    - Phase Spiders 2 and 3 are on the ethereal plane right now (I found an option in MapTool that lets me control opacity of tokens, which is great for this!)
    - They all have health bars, which might make things a bit easier to assess.
    - Mikolt as said is 70 feet up. This'll get tricky since it's kind-of 3D and phase spiders can move in three dimensions on the Ethereal Plane, but we'll see how we go...

    As to terrain:
    - I hope the elevations are clear-ish from the way shadows are falling, but wherever you see a higher "terrace" on the ground, assume the distances are 10 feet up, i.e. Keda's sitting at 30 foot elevation above trail level, and the lightest green is basically the path of the trail.
    - The boulder at O15-P16 is big enough to get behind and maybe not be seen.
    - There is a statue standing at H19-I20, and maybe if anyone survives this you'll have a better chance to look at it...

All good? Then it's 48 hours for danielx and Dexam to get in their posts, and we'll see what happens! (As always - actions are resolved in order of posting within your initiative "group".)

Keda gives a sigh, seeing that Mikholt's actions have forced their hands... as if the troupe didn't have enough enemies without aggravating the local wildlife!

As Arendi began casting, Keda's shot loosed. It flew true, and squacked into one of the phase spider's eight cold blue eyes, drawing another chittering screech from the creature. But it also clearly marked his position, and eight massive, skittering, terrifying legs began to click in staccato on the ground as the spider turned and started towards him.

And disappeared, as it did. As did, in fact, all of them, with skitters of movement.

They'd all gone between, as Mikolt and Keda knew. From there, phase spiders could shift back to the Material/What Is and attack with their poison, but exactly where any of them were right at that moment was a matter of guesswork. A dangerous bit of guesswork. Worse still was that these arachnids were deathly silent while between, making it that much harder to spot them.

Vokon and Chatty, though - whether on instinct or luck or whatever - did see something. A pebble that shifted where it shouldn't, some sort of odd ripple in the air, for a moment. Something was moving near the boulder closest to them, something that seemed to be there where nothing actually was.

I'm just reproducing the map again for faster update, (aware Arendi moves to R11, and Keda is prone in his position) and to show you where the spiders were. I figured not much point just making another map right at this point with all four spiders invisible anyway.

All of them are invisible at this moment, and having rolled Spot checks where applicable (chance within 30 feet), Chatty and Vokon notice something odd at around M13-N17, though - because it's invisible - they couldn't pinpoint its position anyway. No other Spot checks pass, or maybe there wasn't a reason to make one for anyone else.

As a reminder, the initiative order:
    Arendi, Keda
    Monsters
    Alastor, Chatty/Cyzar/Aeric, Mikolt, Vokon

So we'll need king, Toli, INevaMetaFlowaIDiddenLike, and Aracorblimey :D to post up their moves in the next 48 hours, and see where we are then. As always, actions are generally resolved in order of posting.

Keda's warning about the spiders became all too apparent as the air in front of him shimmered and something all blur and white and sharp-clawed legs and gleaming eyes lashed at him. He heard a distant twung from Mikolt's bow, and one of her arrows hit clean in the phase spider's eye, drawing a hiss.

But by the time that happened, his flesh was burning from where the spider's fangs had struck. The phase spider tore its fangs free and began to go between again - Keda lashed at it with his annulat more out of expectation than hope, but his weapon hit nothing but air as the creature went insubstantial again, doubtless darting away from him. For a second the neraph hesitated, knowing the viciousness of the poison that such creatures had - but his biology shifted at the poison, neutralising it.

Vokon also had his wish granted. Next to him, another great, chittering shape appeared, and his hammer lashed out like lightning. The blow was powerful enough that it clean cracked the creature's thorax, drawing a screech from the great beast and ichor pouring from a dreadful wound as the hammer rearranged its insides. But still the alien arachnid didn't fall. One of its eight legs nicked Vokon, drawing a gout of blood.

He didn't see the other one that hit him from behind. The phase spider sank its fangs into the goliath's upper back, delivering a full dose of the oil-like poison that dripped from its jaw. The poison blasted through Vokon's body, searing his organs, making his heart skip a beat.

    And the last spider?

Of it there was no sign.

    Yet.

Keda takes 8 hitpoint damage after DR is factored in.

Both Vokon and Mikolt's blows land.

Ethereal creatures can see into the Prime Material Plane, at least about 60 feet out.

The two visible creatures are also fully material, at least at this instant. As before, they've got health bars which should give you a general idea of their physical condition if the post didn't.

The initiative order changed a little due to readying actions, so it's like this:

    Arendi, Keda, Vokon, Mikolt
    Monsters
    Alastor, Chatty

So that gives a.a.king and Toliudar 48 hours to put up their actions. That said, since everyone else is in the 'first group', and it looks like Toli hasn't logged in for the better part of a month, if a.a. gets his actions in and people don't need to wait and see what the result of those actions are, the rest of you can then post up immediately. Just make sure a.a. gets to post first.

It was only then that Mikolt's head began to clear – and to develop a distinct purplish hue as blood rushed into her face. Vokon was surrounded and the Circus, charging blindly into the fray. They were not supposed to do that. Did she doom them all? That would have been tantamount to breaking her oath, a shame she could not possibly live with.

No. she whispered. What was she to do now? Fight, of course. But then? If that was to fail? The ineffable horror of the thought palpably swelled in her chest. Reflexively, she drew and released and drew and released. May the rest prove wiser than she did!

"They appeared again?!" Alastor said. This time in shock. It may have blown their hiding spot, but he assumed they were spotted anyway. Well, seeing as they had been spotted, might as well keep talking "Quick Aeric, take out your drums" he said to his devoted follower, followed by a quick "GET THEM" to the dangerous that he had tamed.

They both listend without hestination. Aeric played an uplifting beat while Cyzar sprinted round the corner to try and finish the job the rest had started.

Mikolt's second shot drilled clean into the wounded phase spider's brain, dropping it with a thunderous crash to the ground as its brain ceased functioning.

The other spider shrieked, a high, spine-calcifying, chittering scream of agony, making an awful noise as Aeric's strong voice thundered and Alastor's spellcasting chanted higher. Keda's annulat set vital fluids spraying, Piko got a nasty bite into the arachnid, Vokon's hammer broke two legs in one swipe. And that gave Arendi enough space to drive Reason straight through its neck, severing the dreadful head from the grotesque body, and it too collapsed.

Keda sensed movement out of the corner of his eye, and both reflexively janked his head away as well as swung with the annulat in his hand. The weapon hit nothing but air, and again the neraph saw the spider fading out of existence again, albeit still looking the worse for wear and having failed to draw blood.

Aeric's voice rang higher - and then was interrupted with a grunt of pain. The circus turned to notice the last spider fading out of existence again, moving once more away from the star elf, whose face was already turning pale(r) as the fierce venom burned through his system ...

So there's still the two spiders out there.

Aeric takes 8 hitpoints damage and 6 CON damage. He has a rather unimpressive Fort save, and he doesn't have a lot of hitpoints to spare.

Keda's AoO didn't land, unfortunately, and Aeric doesn't threaten since he's not armed with a melee weapon.

    Initiative Order:
    Arendi, Keda, Vokon, Mikolt, Alastor
    Monsters
    Chatty

That being said, we might as well proceed on the basis Toli's not going to be around for this fight. So that means we're into the next round and there's 48 hours for everyone to post up their actions.

Meta, Mikolt was moved because she can't hover and needs to maintain at least a little forward motion. Nothing really significant in the move, though.

Arendi looked around. "Okay, I want to hope that they just ran but when have we been lucky? Unless these things suddenly learn how to magic, we should probably group together."

He spoke a quick word of healing, then went over to Aeric and tapped the elf with more of the same.

The moment of relief felling two of the beasts brought left a bitter aftertaste behind when Aeric was bit. Still, the progress made, slow and painful as it was, worked well towards restoring Mikolt's composure all the same. It's not over. she pronounced, her voice ringing hard and strong again. Protect Master Aeric! He can take less than any of us. she went on, already diving downwards at a steep angle and in a strange staccato, a long arm drawing the scimitar hanging from her belt, to skirt the rock shielding the clown from the west and stop just above the elf's head, her wings flanking the gangling drummer like thick, dark curtains with each beat.

There would be a time for an admission of guilt later. Right then, she had her word to honour.

    Alright. Mikolt move action dives down to an effective 5' above P15 (i.e. a few inches above Aeric's head);
    free action dropping her bow from 10' up (so at P14, I think) and drawing her scimitar in the meantime;
and standard action readies an attack on any hostile creature getting within 10' of her (i.e. her current reach): (1d20+10)[11] for (1d6+6)[8] slashing.

If anything hits Aeric until the beginning of her next turn, she will immediate action use Shield Ally to absorb half the damage dealt.

Alastor wanted to shout when heard Aeric screech, but he couldn't. Despite the powerful attack, the man did not break his performance, so he certainly had no excuse to break his chanting. Still, when he finally finished his spell and the hippogriff appeared, it felt like hollow achievement. The hippogriff just hung in the air, much like Mikolt who had also come to Aeric's aid.

"Aeric, do what you can to guard yourself. Everyone, prepare to be attacked from any angle!"

They weren't great orders, but he didn't know what else he could say that would help against such an opponent. He moved back to help defend the wounded clown, as the clown himself cast a spell to guard himself the best he could. Cyzar on the other hand got into position to pounce at anything that appeared out of nowhere!

Cyzar readies an action to attack or pounce (if he can charge/pounce with a readied action) at anything that seems to appear out of nowhere in the next round

The circus flocked to Aeric's side, Arendi pulsing healing energy into the pale elf's form.

Off to the side, there was a ripple of empty air - and a clawed leg nicked Cyzar's side, drawing a snarl of rage from the beast. But it hadn't been hit with a fang, and no poison passed into the creature.

The phase spider was met with the strange, whistling noise of the annulat as it wheeled through the air, and with Cyzar's lightning-quick blows. Keda's throw was perfect, one of those moments that every thrower or archer hopes for in his life, where shoulder and arm and hand all sing together in one chord, and the razor edge of the Limbo-forged steel slashed clean through one of the spider's legs. Cyzar tore at another.

And with a screech of pain, the phase spider turned and fled, disappearing once more, its chittering roar disappearing into the between.

    They were gone.

Mikolt and Keda didn't exactly know how with assurance, but the spiders were gone, in the same peculiar way that the pressure against one's skin fades as stormclouds clear and pass by. They'd fled; phase spiders were intelligent enough to know when they were outmatched, and a tightly-packed group bristling with steel was not easy prey.

Which left the group with its injuries. Aeric was breathing shallowly, an uncharacteristic sweat running down his face, smearing the lines of his facepaint. The poison was still racing, racing. Arendi knew they only had moments to do something before they could determine whether the injury reached vital organs and became life-threatening. Vokon, too, could still feel the poison burning in his own form, too.

    Spoiler: OOC

And that's the end of combat. First, 600 XP each for the party.

Second, Cyzar takes 5 hitpoint damage but resisted poison.

However, that leaves the circus with the effects of poison. Vokon I presume will Iron Heart Surge his away (feel free to IC that by quoting 'By the power of Grayskull' or similar, Aracor :) ) but Aeric's due for another Fort saving throw to see if he takes 1d8 more CON damage on top of the 6 he's had. Antitoxin, if taken, adds a +5 bonus to this roll, but if you have any other ideas to try and help him avoid taking this damage, now's the time. What do you do?

Tirning around in the air, Mikolt slid backwards and dropped to the ground in front of the clown, tossing her scimitar back into its scabbard with a single, fluidly graceful motion. Now they are gone. she stated simply and in a small voice, a flood of air escaping her lungs on the heels of her words. She didn't have the presence to look for the eye of the Sublime Master. Not that there weren't more pressing concerns to address, of course. Aeric seemed violently sick. Even she could tell that. Is that the poison? she asked the elf, reaching out with a hand to have it hesitantly hover about his shoulder, lest he falter, and beginning to fidget with the straps of her pack, intent on loosening them. I have a vest that could help withstand it; do you…? she offered cautiously, shrugging the haversack off her shoulders, and sliding her free arm onto her back.

    Spoiler: OOC

The question is, of course, rhetorical, though Mikolt doesn't know that: even with help, removing her armour and the vest of resistance would take 6 more rounds for a total of 8 before it would be of any use to Aeric. and we have much quicker options. I'm mostly just announcing the victory for the sake of the others to smooth the ground for the Amulet/Resistance/Lesser Restoration combo.

"I am ... well ... saer greywarden," the star elf managed, though the pale cast of his face and the sweat pouring down his forehead gave the lie to that assertion. "I would ... just appreciate ... a chance to ... rest for a mere moment..."
