    Svek's acid downs one, Adam's spell culls another, leaving the last one to take strikes from Honor and Aanash. It remains standing only long enough to snap a bite out at Svek, before it's swiftly put down by your combined attacks without any more threats.

    The last ghoul was restrained, it hits Svek for 9 unless he Shields, but after that it's fairly guaranteed he's going to die, so calling combat there.

    Despite how crushingly you won, this was - by CR - a Deadly Encounter, and as such rewarded 15 experience for it.


    You're left with three more rooms to investigate - each of which held some of the vampiric ghouls - plus another code door. One that, at the very least, you know can be smashed down with minor efforts.

    Moving the moonbeam out of the way, Adam approaches the opening, and looks for more of these ghouls. Seeing none, he pauses for a moment, extending his hands in a brief prayer for the souls of the people that became the twisted ghouls, before moving through the doorway, and beginning the hunt for another set of codes, or for evidence of the Kundark expedition's presence.

    The room at your right - before the first, now broken, code door - turns out to have been the washroom, containing a few uncleaned toilets and bloodstained sinks. There's a pair of bodies here, or what were bodies, now torn asunder and picked clean. What few parts remain are covered in bite marks, and even the bloodstained floors bear the marks of a tongue lapping up the spilled liquid that seems perpetually fresh. There's nothing to indicate who they bodies were, and what scraps of cloth that remain of their wear gives you no hints.

    Both the other rooms past the broken door, and before the intact one, appear similar - plush meeting rooms with an array of chairs around only a single desk, and hundreds upon hundreds of folders and files and books lining the bookshelves that occupy every inch of wall space. There's the remnants of a few bodies here too, as torn apart as the last. Your investigation, even as you try to focus only on the spots you deem important, neverthless takes longer than you might like. It does turn up some coinage, and a cloak you deem to be magical.

    It is not in any desks, but rather behind an utterly utilitarian painting of a dwarven banker that you find the code to the next door, jotted down on a scrap of paper: 13927.

    Opening the code door thankfully doesn't provoke any more danger, however it does lead straight down stairs into darkness that are cloyed thick with the smell of death. Whatever light sources or darkvision you possess prove insufficient to reach far into the gloom, and as you reach the bottom of the stairs you see your third code door so far, this one smashed into splinters and shards scattered at your feet, as if a raging bull the size of a dragon charged it down. More doors split off into side rooms to your left and right - their doors smaller, and notably intact.

    Strutting through the destroyed vault door with a wave of his hand in a feeble attempt to ward off the smell, Aanash comments, "So much for this House's legendary construction," with a look back at the shredded remains. "Maybe the magic wore off after a while," he guesses, approaching the next door. The general consensus seems to be against knocking it down, so he turns and takes watch of the entrance while the others begin their search - in case the warforged should arrive hollering for bloody vengeance.

    Once the door is bypassed and they descent into darkness, Aanash casts a simple Light cantrip on his golden bracelet, holding it aloft to illuminate their path. "I suggest we forge ahead, but keep a guard at our rear, either myself or Honor. In case of more ghouls from behind these doors," he tells the party in a low voice. "Time is turning onwards."

    Finding scattered coins and a magical cloak on the shattered and devoured remains of corpses, but no answers, Adam stuffs them both into the Bag of Holding, for later discussion. "May their souls find peace, for I fear there is little I can do for their bodies, not now." His voice is quiet, and full of sorrow, and perhaps a touch of fear.

    As the next room comes into sight, and with it the shattered remains of a door with intact side doors, Adam frowns as he examines the wreckage. "Broken out, or in?" His voice is soft, musing as he takes in the destruction. "Because the others were not broken, which implies that the breaker is still here."

    An inspection of the door's damage indicates that it was shattered away from you, towards the inside from further inside, rather than towards you. It's possible that the previous scavenger team made it here after all, and ended up being slightly less careful about their entrance than you were.

    A moment of silence allows you to keenly listen at the shut doors. If there is anything within them, they're stock still and completely silent.

    Pressing forward, you approach, and then pass, another shattered code door, to another short set of stairs that lead down to a bloodstained floor marked with symbols. A body lies halfway along, slumped against the left side of the wall. Though the walls look normal, the location of the body peppered with innumerable evenly spaced holes suggests that there is some form of trap in place, one that has since retracted after being triggered.

    Using the power of flight, Adam is able to cross over the trap without triggering it, carrying Honour in swiftly straining arms.

    Crossing over, you see that the vault door on the far side is open. Properly open, rather than smashed asunder, though the same cannot be said for the inside of the vault itself. Great rents have been torn through the stonework by massive claws that you have little doubt must dwarf you in size. A glance inside the greater vault finds it remarkably empty - far more so than you would have hoped for - but more pressingly is that the inner inner vault is also opened, but unlike the door you now stand beside the damage on its hinges and edges suggests that it was smashed open from the inside. No sooner does Honor's foot hit the floor then you hear the scraping of something large and unpleasant on metal, as if something is waking up, still hidden in the darkness inside the inner vault.

    With some damn monstrosity seemingly about to emerge, Adam really only has one card left to play after the previous battles, once more raising his hammer, calling out to the Host, and creating a whirlwind of mixed symbols. As they appear, he looks at them, considers what they mean. His eyes seem drawn to a circular symbol, with rays light the light of sun, glowing valiantly, despite the darkness around them. Perhaps a sign of what was to come? Or perhaps the light would simply be abandoned, when it was no longer useful, just as Cyre had been.

    As you cast spells you hear the scraping grow louder. You see the scything blades first, great curved claws of hardened keratin - four in total, each on its own dedicated appendage. The beast is covered in thick chitinous plates, its heavy stomps shaking the room around you. Deployed on the battlefield, it might be a weapon that could charge down an army. In this narrow space, it has eyes only for you. Its maw lined with teeth as thick as as your heads opens and it unleashes a roar of hunger, but great though your enemy is, its size seems to slow its response, and you steal the initiative on it.

    With the glowing holy symbols around him, and Honor at his side, Adam raises his hammer, and takes a swing towards the creature, hurling a glowing bolt of radiant energy towards the creature. Afterwards, he looks to Honor. "We need to either hold our ground, or get to cover, and I'm thinking that thing will bowl us onto the trap behind us with ease. Take cover in the alcoves!"
    Putting his words into action, Adam moves to take cover, flying around the wreckage of the door next to Honor to shelter in the alcove there.

    Adam's spell bounces off the creature's thick carapace, but Aanash's manages to slip into the cracks between plates, causing a mild grunt of discord. Adam doesn't know what the creature is, nor guess from where it came. This is a monster of the Mournland, of that you can be sure, and perilously little is known about it. It does, however, seem susceptible for webs, for only a moment, halted before tearing its way through. It doesn't stop moving forward towards the party, blades slicing at the ground, but unable to yet reach you.

    "Ah," at Honor's suggestion to solve the puzzle, Aanash gives it a helpless look and then shrugs, forming another spell in his hand. "I cannot even begin to fathom this puzzle, my friend! Apologies!" Holding onto the spell, he waits to see if the beast will entangle itself in the webs and make of itself a easier target.

    Reconsidering his earlier strategy, Adam moves up, and over, trying to lure the creature into the trap while flying high enough to avoid it himself, hoping that the creature would go after him, and get struck by the trap and that the trap did not hit him as well. To make sure that he has it's attention, he launches another glowing, golden bolt of light towards the creature as he bangs his hammer on his shield.

    While he isn't eager to let Adam play the bait, it did seem like the best way to turn this annoying trap into an ally, if just for a few seconds. Adam moves deeper into the alcove and tries to make himself an unattractive target.

    The ranged barrage continues, the creature's feet becoming stickied in the webs once more and locking it down just long enough for Aanash's spell to land before it tears itself free a second time. It continues its charge forward, and though it's clearly focused primarily on the trio in the corridor, its wide swinging arcblade slices through the wall to get at Honor. Trained and disciplined, however, the warforged ducks beneath it as the slicing appendage rakes through stone, metal and wood - including the door at his back, revealing a bloodstained room behind him though if there is any other occupants, he can't see them from his current position.

    They break out of web a second time (12+8=20) with their action and move forward, their movement running out just before they reach the trap. It swings at Honor with its LA but misses (3+10=13)

    It does seem to be more focused on the trio than Honor currently.

    Honor grinds his jaws against each other. He wanted to lash out. He wanted to punish this monstrosity. But if he tried to face it in solo melee combat he would surely fall. Honor raises his hammer and tries to intercept any incoming blows, keeping up his defensive stance and hoping to lure the beast further into the trap. He also kept a mindful eye on the shattered door behind him, keeping a mind to his rear defense in case the room happened to be occupied by more ghouls.

    The fighting retreat continues, with spells slipping past its guard - or not, in Aanash's case. On its way past Honor it lashes out with a foot, and catches the warforged unable to avoid it. The massive weight crashes down, flooring the mechanical warrior, but the icy guard singles in return and forces it away from any incentive to finish the job. Instead, it presses onwards, straight into Adam's spirits, and more pressingly, dropping its weight on trapped floors. Immediately, dozens of thin spines thrust out from the walls, peppering both beast and Adam with innumerable wounds. It lashes out at both Adam and the walls with its thick blades - the former misses, the latter cleaves away at the parts of the trap that had injured it, leaving most of it - including where Adam is floating - still intact. The lances retract, and you hear the unmistakeably sound of them locking back into place, though how long between uses is anyone's guess.

    ...but unfortunately I rolled two 20s, causing Honor to get crit and set to 0. Armour of Agathys did at least hit back for you.

    The trap dealt 20 (from 4d10) damage to both Adam and the enemy, and SG goes off from the movement - it made its save, took 7 damage. The creature is now decidedly bloodied. It also manages to miss (barely) Adam with its attack (9+10=19). It also uses its LA to attack the trap, cleaving parts away from it in the two squares it's currently covering, leaving the remaining squares south of it 'active'.
