Shimura raised an eyebrow at the spirits response, it was not what he expected, was he blaming them somehow?

He stepped forward, and gave a careful low bow, and spoke to the spirit in this stance.

"Oh great spirit, we are hunting a group that stole the divine scriptures, we have hunted them to this location, these are the people responsible for the taint spreading. will you help us?"

"Indeed, these villagers here are blameless for this tragedy..." Whatever happened, Ahalyā prayed that the doc cu’o’c would not take his righteous anger out on them at least. "Those bearing the mark of the Crab clan stole the sacred scriptures from the regent and we have been tasked with retrieving them. What their purpose was in such theft goes beyond simple martial conflict, we fear. For with every step, we have found that our quarry would rather leave ruin and misery in its wake than simply flee. Things are out of balance. If this is a sign that the Crab have willingly fallen to the Shadowlands, then that cannot stand. But these humble villagers are fighting to stem back this darkness, noble spirit -- and we fight with them. If they fall -- if we fall, no one will be left to cleanse the poison that remains that you so justly rage against."

By her side, Raksha allowed herself a small growl. The crane's stubbornness was almost pleasant compared to the single mindedness of the doc cu’o’c (and this was from a being who had little love for hoomins most of the time).

The kami takes the words slowly, scanning them for lies and misdirection, as it is the custom of the talking beings: lie.

That seemed to take a minute; the creature gazed around the frightened men and women and sniffed the air, one nostril flaring with the smell of charred pennangolan.

You have killed one of those tainted... it may be you are not trying to deceive me.

It walked forward, its only leg moving as if the other was not missing, with the steady rhythmic steps of someone walking. The missing half is not much severed as simply invisible and intangible across the realm of men and the realm of kami. It approached the shaman. It stood taller than Shimura, and its arm muscles were powerful as its axe sparkled and crackled with the force of lighting.

What would you have me do to defend my land? SPEAK and I shall be ready

Leylek's spreading wings freeze for a moment in the air as the half-man seems to rebuff the Shaman. Mercifully, it is merely blunter than the bird himself, however. Another enemy of strange power is hardly what they need, not now when they are barely back from the brink. Leylek can see their own leader is still shaken and yet to compose himself; and the dancer almost died. He frowns. I'm not of this land, revered aksakal. he bows to the kami once more. Its spirits have never talked to me before. Mistress Ahalyā knows best, of us all. Please treat her words on the matter as hers – and mine as well. All I can entreat you to do is that if all else is impossible or beyond what you will do for this shore, stand and watch, and tip the scales should we falter. The frown, now deeper, returns. We faltered before. It cost us. Having spoken, the crane launches himself into the air.

Onka was kinda afraid of that new spirit, but thanks to Ahalya's wise words it seems the spirit was somewhat appeased. He gave the ones who danced with him a meaningful glance, trying to tell them without words, that they too helped in securing a new ally for the village.

The dancer retreated subtly letting Ahalya and Shimura talk about the tactical use of they're new ally to get a moment to simply breath and relax. He couldn't know what would appear in a few hours but try'd to steel his mind anyway. He was too afraid against this enemy's and a calm mind would probably help better against the horrors that would await instead of a raucous one.

Leylek took flight as the night fully formed around the village. A starless and dense sky. The crane drew concentric circles to lookout for incoming danger.
There he saw it. Like a slow mist forming around the village, a living mist becoming more solid as the night grew. Only the waterside of the town seemed free from that surrounding mist. Oppressive.

The Kami looked at Shimura sideways.

They are close, like long fingers slowly closing around the land. And one of them makes the roots of the trees tremble. That one is coming from the mountains.

It turns its eye towards the road you traveled earlier right as the moon starts showing it's brilliant edge around the mountaintops.

They will attack when the moon is fully over that peak.

The villagers, terrified and stunned, follow his monocular gaze and there's a collective gasp.

"Please, can you tell what sort of beings they are, how many and what dangers they possess?" Ahalyā had limited magicks left, but being forewarned might at least give her an idea to how to apply them.

Still, she had to keep reminding herself that their ally would protect the land than themselves.

As he watches the mist form, irate wrinkles rippling under the plummage on his forehead, Leylek finds that unlike when he had to face Shimura-sama, the samurais body dancing on malign strings held by tainted hands, he is not afraid. It was a storm, more terrible than any he could imagine before, that snatched him away from his people and left him here. And he was not afraid. He called it Fate; and Fate it proved to be, much as he may have had to wait: watching slow, leepy harbours and streets, chasing petty thieves: these were small duties. But they all led to this, a great duty. Hours before, he was to despair in it, but Fate was willing. He will serve it on, then, no matter what. For what is this, if not jut another storm to weather?

A mist is forming! On all sides, save the shore! he calls down to the others, his voice firm and loud as he sails towards the great pine tree, intent on resting on a branch for a moment – but no longer than it takes to transfer a vial from his pack into the pouch on his belt. It is no mere fog! Ready yourselves!

Onka gathers the old, the frail and the children and directs them to the house that is closest to the mist-free waters. He makes sure even they have something to defend themselves with. A heavy stone, a sharp stick. They should have something to defend themselves with.

He tells the others were the most vulnerable of the village folk are, then arms himself with his trusty spear and waits for the enemies to appear. He can only hope that they all have done enough.

Shimura was glossy eyed, he was living another moment, and not entirely in there, but when the Kami replied, his eyes focused and he narrowed his eyes, they were surrounded, this was not good.

Conventional warfare provided logic for such an event, even a dao: "When you surround an army, leave an outlet free. Do not press a desperate foe too hard." but this was not conventional, and we do not have an outlet, unless we can get a boat ready....

He suddenly awoke, moving into action from his inaction "MOVE TO THE BEACH, FORM A PERIMETER, WE NEED FIRE AT EVEN SPACED INTERVALS" he points to several able bodied villages "YOU AND YOU, GO, AND GET THAT READY, THE OTHERS, GATHER WHAT WEAPONS YOU CAN, ANYONE WHO CAN FIX A RAFT, OR A BOAT, DO SO, WE MAY NEED TO LEAVE TO THE WATER."

He looked around at everyone, "MOVE!" he yelled, at those who were still stuck in the terror of the moment. As he said this, he burst into flames that licked his body, but did not hurt, a little showboating couldn't hurt here, perhaps lift their spirits a little.

The Du-Qoc closes its eye and takes in the night breeze answering Ahalya's question.

They are one and many like a shadow under many dim lights. I can feel the one, the hoofs of its horse bruise the land with every step.

Onka and Miromoto harness the still shellshocked villagers, quelching their fears with your natural charisma and leadership. The compassionate dancer and the honorable dragon. The villagers bring the weapons they have, their lamps and oil and set a perimeter around the pier as Shimura instructed. Children are tuck inside a barricade of barrels and wagons.

The moon is now fully visible over the peaks.

Leylek sees the mist closing in inch by inch and then, as the moon rises clear and full, the mist sinks inside the earth, seeping into the land as if it was never there.

That's when you hear the hoofs. cut against the pale moon a rider advances through the stream that leads to the piers across town. It wasn't there a minute ago, not it is perfectly clear, an empty banner on one hand, it sees all of you, you can feel its gaze even if its eyes remain invisible.
    The Du-qoc snarls.

    It is here

Onka faces the night, his grip around his weapon light. It felt good helping the fearful villagers, he never felt much like a leader, but giving people direction was something he always felt he could do.

When the rider and the wail appears Onka's grip around his weapon get's more intense, to combat the wail, he stomps his feet, rams the end of his spear towards the ground to create a challenging rhythm against the enemy.

Something is off about this oni -- what is it? The shaman frowned.

The onikage it rode was easy enough to know what sort of threats it entailed. But its rider didn't seem to be at full power. Did it think their group wasn't that much of a threat and so, chose not to manifest itself to all its strength? Ahalyā didn't think they would be that lucky. Or, following the warning of the doc cu'o'c, was this oni capable of dividing itself somehow. That parts of it were elsewhere, lurking to ambush them at the right/wrong time....?

The rider stopped at Miromoto's challenge and rose it's blank banner with one hand. The wailing became a deep silence, as if the earth itself sucked out the air and the sonic waves. The onikage pranced anxiously. Then the rider lowered the banner and pointed at Miromoto from a distance and spurred irs mount forward, moving like a breeze.

Ahalya couldn't determine the nature of the Oni, but her senses buzzed around. feeling dozens of spirits around, rippling through the vines and roots of the earth tunneling the land towards the people at the pier.

    The du-qoc felt it too!

    They are surrounding us!

And it swung his powerful axe against an invisible foe! But as the axe stroke it cleft through a smaller creature, a putrid Bajang's head rolled off the tiny body, showing its serrated teeth in a deadly throe!

Leylek can hear Shimura's ringing challenge, the uneasy grunt of the half-man, the falling axe and the thud of the head, hitting the ground in the now eerie silence, signalling the weapon hit true. He can feel life surge up in him again, courtesy of the Shaman's now familiar power, and see the rider itself surge forward. The challenge is met, then, if without honour and with numbers unseen marshalled forth. Very well.

The Crane lets loose a shrill call and glides forward, swiftly, drawing his bow as he lands, the horns on its uneven limbs curving forward menacingly. Yes, tshuvaltshang. Come, close with us! he hisses coldly; and two arrows are sent flying against the Onikage, this mockery of a noble beast, more offensive even than its rider, somehow, to the bird. At Onka's frantic cry, Ahalyā strained her senses to try to find where the enemy spirits lurked. She knew they were close (and thankfully none were near her yet), but trying to pinpoint them was frustrating. Are they all invisible?!

Raksha whined, sniffing the air. Then she pawed the ground, growling. "...Mistress, they feel like they're under the earth itself!"

"HO! Like worms! They're burrowing under the very ground itself! Ohhh, brave Raksha, good girl!" The shaman cried out, alerting the others. Of course, they've corrupted and infested the land itself!

Such news was not comforting in the slightest.

Ahalyā murmured another spell and cast her last Shield of Faith on herself and Raksha.

Shimura furrowed his eyebrows as he focused on the rider, he knew what the action meant, and what it symbolized.

"So be it, I accept your challenge" He muttered under his breath as he shifted his stance and drew both blades initiating the time honored stance of his ancient family, the Niten Technique.

He stood ready against the oncoming storm.

The ground opens around the lot of you, shadows emerging from it. Rakhsha and Ahalya feel them immediately and are completely aware of the attack. The shadows take the shape of malformed humanoids in which you see the faces of deceased people you know.

Right in front of Onka, the shadows materialize as the governor the dancer killed.

It opens it's mouth and attempts to bite Onka with an elongated shadowy maw that the dancer easily avoids!

Other shadows materialize around the people at the barricade, attacking them with their cold hands and claws. There's panic! some of villagers retaliate with torches!

    Initiative!

When the one he killed appeared again to take his revenge, Onka reflexively swayed out of the way. There was a short panic, when they we're multiple governors who thirsted for the dancers life, but he steadied himself with a short breath. They're enemies loved to play with fear and it was time to spit in the face of it. With a short jab of his spear he severed one of the torches from its pole, Onka span around grabed the torch with one hand and threw it towards Alhalya.

    Onka breathed in.

He continued his movement hitting the two shadows besides him with one fist and one leg, shoving them to the side while sprinting towards the shaman.

A short step to the side, combined with a brutal scythe-kick and the dancer slamming his outstretched palm at the forehead of another two governors, Onka let himself briefly fall down, only to use both his hands to catapult himself up again, seemingly way to high for such a move, kicking one of the shadowy adversaries on his way back to earth, with a quick step to the side he was back to back with Alhalya.

He catched the torch he flung, and breathed out.

As Leylek emits his war cry and looses two quick arrows, Onka starts its deadly dance grabbing a torch and spinning gracefully around the battle field. His fists and his torch pummel the shadow bakemonos, who erupt in a dark puff. He only misses one of them, who ducks a backhanded punch.

However, that same enemy materializes several feet away as two precise arrows hit it in the chest and the second one reduces it to shadowy dust. Leylek shots were true! but the rider and the onikage are nowhere to be seen.

The Rider materializes right where the Bakemono had been a fraction of a second before, from upclose Ahalya and Rhaksha see that rider and horse are one and the same, an aberrant figure made of unformed shadows as much as matter. The horse hoofs do not touch the ground! The creature holds a banner of shadow that emits a damning aura that entangles Onka, Ahalya and Rhaksha. Then it swings his huge katana with one single hand, that elongates unnaturally!

Shimura gritted his teeth against the attacks from the oni, he avoided one, the attacks slow and clumsy, but must have opened himself up to the other, the claws felt like they moved through him, like shadowstuff hurting his soul. Frowning from the pain, he saw the Rider appear next to his allies! His hackles raised, he tried to position towards the thing, but more shadow demons where in his way, he would have to hack his way through.

Steeling himself with a prayer, he moved closer, and struck.

"In the shadowed realm where Oni dwell,
I stand with katana, spirits to repel.
By the strength of honor and virtue's light,
Guard my path through this perilous night.

    Evil Oni, with menacing might,
I banish thee, from my soul take flight.
With courage and valor, I shall abide,
In Bushido's name, you shall not reside.

May the kami protect, and ancestors guide,

Ahalyā grimaced, feeling the whine from poor Raksha before hearing it as the accursed cold took affect on the wolf. Thankfully, she had not been so afflicted. Still, she was no great warrior like the others!

Ho! Too many spirits! Of course this oni would be buttressed by the unclean and foul. Bajang -- no time to find their trees and destroy them!

The shaman frantically weighed her options. "Raksha, defend Onka!"

"...m-mistress...?" The wolf tried to hold back the ice-touched whimper, not wanting to leave Ahalyā potentially undefended. Still, she could smell the new injuries from the battle dancer. Then the wolf nodded, growling.

Meanwhile, the shaman drew herself back a step from the nearest bakemono. Her voice rang out, taking in as many of the evil spirits she could make out. "Hear me, ancestors! Help drive these vile spirits back to the void -- may they torment this land no more!"

The sudden disappearance of the rider, his own arrows biting into lesser shadows, leaves the bird confused for a heartbeat. Where did it go? But Ahalyā's cry of great power and the sudden blur of moment in a corner of his eyes, against the flames of the torches (of those that stand still and of that which dances wildly with Onka) tells him all he needs to know. A taloned hand reaches for another arrow… Only to stop midway. The risk is too great; he cannot afford shooting wide, now that his own are all clustered together around the horseman. He needs to go himself, then.

The scowl of ire back on his visage, Leylek steps forward, grabbing the horns of the bow, long feathers spreading wide as he leaps forward, into a rapid, downward glide. STAND, coward! he screams, shooting on, ready to collide talons first.

The dancer undeniably felt a rush of pride and accomplishment after seeing most of his adversaries fall. It got immediately crushed after the false samurai appeared behind the dancer and slashed him with the power of pure corruption he put through Onka's veins.

He accepted the cold for a brief moment and flowed towards the rider.

With Alhalya praying for the ancestors help and Leylek's screeching the whisper of the dancer towards the horse got swallowed.

    I'm sorry.

Instead of attacking the rider, Onka focused towards his steed instead. four rapid strikes towards the creatures head would hopefully put it out of his misery.
