The hoofs approach quickly it's one set, no horseshoes. But you can't see anything! Unless, a brief second before, you notice there's something in the snow, its shape outlined by falling snow as it leaps over you to the hilly side of the road. Mid-air you think you can see the shape shiftting and react in time as the creature materializes perched on the rocks grabbing the tree with its claw and lashes out a viscious claw at you, your keen senses save you from being flat footed.




The Oni howls ferally with a maniac laugh that echoes through the valley, its claws are enormous and much like those of an oversized mole. It stands on the hill above you towering nine feet tall even hunched savagely. Its howl carries unnatural fear!

He is shaken and afraid, the looming creature truly being a superior opponent, but he wouldn't give up while his companoins where still in danger.

The dancer dismounts, and get's further towards the possible danger while drawing a small throwing dart.

Though pleased beyond measure with the samurai's decision, Leylek has no time to voice the sentiment, with their foe bursting into the scene and trying to remove his head immediately thereafter. The crane, shrugging off the roar without noticing its intended purpose and screeching back a shrill profanity in his own native tongue, springs into the air, balled up talons snapping forward in retaliation.

Shimura's eye s go wide as the strange Oni appears before them, he was expecting enemies on horseback, this was altogether out of his wheel house. His eyes narrowed as he examined the malevolent spirit, his steely resolve not faltering in the presence of the supernatural, though his horse was not of the same frame of mind. Quickly dismounting, his form suddenly became translucent and ethereal, it moved with the wind, and suddenly he was materializing before the Oni! As he did, his blade was like a lightning bolt, glimmering in the sunlit snow it struck at the foul spirit.

An oni! Such giant creatures were capable of great cruelty, though whether if was working with the thieves or was doing this on its own, Ahalyā could not fathom to guess. Still, the shaman bravely shook off the tainted roar of the oni...

...the same could not be said for Raksha, who could only whine in response. And began to lope away from the evil giant -- with Ahalyā still on her back.

"ACK! Raksha, hold position -- they need us!"

"...noooo...! Not safe!" What sounded like more whimpering to the others came from the poor wolf.

Some rather very un-shamanlike vulgarities erupted from Ahalyā. Reluctantly, she couldn't blame the wolf. Ahalyā knew it was best for someone like her to not be in melee range of such a fiend. She was, after all, no warrior. Her mind frantically tried to recall what she knew about the oni as she cast another spell. Maybe a little extra protection would put Raksha's mind at ease...

Leylek, your fearless charge startles the savage Oni and strikes twice, but even as you hit, you see how the wounds begin to heal.

Shimura, The Oni reads your Iajutsu attack and grins while parrying your blade with its claws, the strike rings as if you had hit the hardest rock.

Ahalya, this is an Oni, a savage one, they are evil spirits dressed in mortal flesh to prey in this world, they can become invisible at will and shapechange into other creatures. This one has huge iron-like claws as if to burrow through stone.

Raksha's panic is understandable, as the creature towers over you. You cast a protection spell.

Shimura's horse is kicking around and impedes Onka and Ahalya reaching their intended spots.


ROUND 2

The Oni lashes a claw at the Crane, but it misses wildly. However, Shimura is not that fortunate. One of the Oni's long deadly claws pierces his armor and cruches the bone and the cartilage of his left shoulder, a pang of sharp pain numbs the samurai's arm.

The Oni twists the claw inside and takes it out violently, cutting even more.

Leylek is like the snow in a couple of ways. Chief of which would be how his anger shows: it is a cold, white fury. But the frost has a bite and the snow burns the eye. The bird, for his part, wishes to settle for no less. Overcome with this silent fury at seeing his commander cleaved into, he maintains altitude with a single, powerful beat of his wings and continues to harry the hulking foe – with a beak aimed for that laughing eye.

Shimura's eyes narrowed even before he drew his blade, he knew the strike was wide, he wasn't prepared for however, the retaliation of an angry Oni. Grunting, he took the hit, his left clavicle broken and a bloody wound which leaked his lifeblood at a good amount. He dropped his shoulder low, as if his arm was heavy, every movement sending sharp pangs of pain from his collar bone making him wince. Suddenly, from within came an luminescence serpent with wings, an ancient rokugani dragon in miniature form, it flew around him like a sky eel and stopped above him, floating, it's wings swaying gently. Then in a flash, it was gone, and Shimura had a faint glow.

He took another step, one arm in agony as he bought his blade down at the Oni with a grimace

"EEP! Oni! Very, very bad! They can heal themselves. Need fire, need acid! Or a LOT of BLADES to its neck!" screeched the vanara.

"I knew this was a bad place..." whined Raksha.

Onka, still afraid and terrified contemplated a lot of possibilities on what he could do. He could stay further away from the enemy and pepper it with darts, but with his allies surrounding it, that would hinder his aim, especially in all that snow. He could use his trusty spear that I left on the horse too... Damn.

Screaming on top of his lungs, more to scream out his fear then to intimidate the oni Onka ran towards the monstrosity, throwing a flailing punch at one it's legs.

If I interpret the map correctly, Onka should be able to get towards the enemy, the path we are on doesn't seem to be difficult terrain I THINK.
Onka doesn't tumble, with the Oni being large, he probably get's a AoO.

Round 3

The Oni's eyes widen in anger as the crane pokes at the evil spirit's face and upper body. The creature gathers its breath and its cheeks bulk up right before its neck shakes violently and a ball of molten copper flies out of his mouth towards the Crane's face who rolls mid air dodging the molten metal, the spat crashes into a tree on the other side of the road and shatters the trunks igniting it on fire.

Then, clearly wounded, the creature turns invisible and shouts in common.

I don't have time for your games!

And then leaps over Shimura to the other side of the panicked horse. You can't see it, but the snow delineates it's shape.

You came to us. he pronounces sternly, a taloned leg briefly flashing out in hope of reaching the invisible foe as it flees, turning in the air as he does so to shoot after the Oni, spinning around at the last moment to try and sail into its unseen form legs first.

Round 4

The Snow falls on the wounded Oni's invisible body mixing in with the spirit's dark blood from the wounds. With an unnatural scream, the evil spirit becomes invisible again and launches a barrage of attacks vs Leylek, the clearest and most unexpected threat. Two powerful claws driven by immense fury rip at the crane, the creature only misses with a powerful bite directed at the cranes' long neck. After the attack, the monster leaps towards the trees on the right side of the road and howls.

Two power attack claws hit leylek for 1d6(1)+ 10 and 1d6(4) +10 for 25 damage. Then the Oni made his tumble check. Leapt towards the rocks to the right.

The wounded bird lets loose a screech – not of pain, but of frustration. The Oni is strong and fast; and he just let it leverage those both. No matter, however. It is visible now, and not that far away. Leylek and his angered zeal dart into the air once more to try and collide into the huyling form of the creature.

Frowning, Shimura flicks his blade with his wrist, and then slowly sheathes it, un-slinging his bow in the next movement, aims and shoots at the Oni with practiced ease.

Round 4

Leylek continues his relentless pursuit and wounds the foe more. Onka tumbles uphill with a few acrobatic flips and aims a well placed kick at the monster's knees. The Oni is clearly surprised with the resistance exhibit and as he starts to turn around to flee Shimura lets go a deadly arrow. The arrow's colorful feathers lit up the snow as it flies true towards the Oni's throat slicing the aorta and lodging into the creature's neck. The Oni spins in horror as its legs give up and it collapses from uphill into the road next to the panicked horse. Its black blood soiling the snow.

Leylek, his scowl unending, nods at Onka, performs a quick bow towards Shimura and then wordlessly sails down beside the limp body of the oni, removing a flask from his pack and pouring its viscous contents over the creature's upper back. The others can, no doubt, tell that it's lamp oil. Who wants the honour? the crane speaks up, at last, coolly.

"Do it quickly!" Shimura hissed, as his shoulder screamed out in pain as the adrenaline dumped.

Seeing the monstrosity fall Onka falls down too. Gasping for air the dancer is still shaking in slowly subsiding fear. When Leylek glides down and douses the creature the dancer can only shake his head in denial. I don't... Sorry

"Ho, I can make fire, yes..." The shaman shuffled forwards, flint and steel in her hand. Typical city folk who knew little of the ways of the wild. "Spirits and ancestors, cast this evil back to oblivion. May it no longer prey upon the innocent and taint these lands..."

And Ahalyā bowed her head as she made sparks.

The breathless Oni’s wounds were closing every second, the life still not abandoning it. Shimura and Onka twisted the arrow in its throat to keep it down while everyone else tried to find a way of making fire. Finally, the shaman lit it up and the Oni became a bonfire emanating a hideous black smoke and a stench of evil. As The demonic flesh charred and the Oni’s spirit abandoned this realm, Ahlya sensed it leaving in anger.

The snow became a soft but dense rain.
