"Either there's no one there, or I'm the only one in this whole demiplane who needs light to see," Runa mutters.

She holds up a hand to indicate the others should wait where they are, then pads stealthily over the gravel to the doors, navigating using Wol's eyes. Letting her senses return to her own body, she presses her ear to the metal, trying to detect any sound coming from within.

Ekemon straightens himself up, I was acting decisively, you brute. A moment of indignation passes quickly to curiosity as Ekemon moves around the door to see what is lurking inside. Step aside, he grumbles to Kynos, flicking the button on his wand and illuminating the inside of the barn.

Kyros yanks the door open. Ekemon flicks on the Wand of Directional Light, creating a constellation of little red sparks as thousands of red beady eyes reflect the light. Gaunt grey chickens with pallid cones and jagged beaks stare hungrily at the two living beings who have just opened their door.

Runa pulls out her shining sword in time to see the chicken horde poised to attack. Acting on reflex, she drops the extinguished lantern she holds and makes a complex hand gesture, speaking a word of power at the same time.

The image of a wooden block appears, large enough to block the doorway and concealing Kyros and Ekemon from the chickens. The side facing the chickens is slightly concave and bristles with wicked steel spikes.

"Close it again, close it again," Runa calls as she scampers backward. "That won't stop them for long."

Runa moves 20 feet away from the doors and casts Silent Image. The block she creates is a 15-foot cube, positioned so the spiky end is facing the chickens and it covers the open part of the doorway. Kyros should be in its space, so he can automatically realize it is an illusion through physical interaction and see through it. Anyone other than him and Runa can realize it is an illusion by interacting with it physically or using their action to make a DC 14 Intelligence (Investigation) check to inspect it.

Already moving, a couple of the closest groups of chickens peck at the illusion, ending up with their heads inside it and accidentally able to see through it. They move through in pursuit of prey. Apparently a very few others decide it's fake, as a few more chickens end up moving through. The ones who came through in pursuit hop, flutter, and peck at Kynos and Ekemon.

The chickens find gaps in the armor of both, particularly around the face. Ekemon feels his body lock up for just a moment, then shake it off.

Before he knows it Runa is leaping backward and the door shuts. Huh? No, Kynos is shutting the door, but there's a wall there now? The gray chickens coming running through the wall at Ekemon and Kynos, What is happening right now?! Ekemon shouts as he tries to defend himself. He feels the chickens swarming him and pecking him, No no no, I eat you, not the other way around! His limbs begin to stiffen and feel heavy, Uh... their pecks are paralyzing me or something! Kynos' divine grace, from whatever god thought him suitable as a champion, washes over Ekemon and staves off the chicken paralysis. Ekemon drops the wand and incants a spell before gripping his longsword in two hands, Time for some roast chicken. His sword is wreathed in flame and he lashes out at the swarm attacking him. Spoiler: Turn 1 Show Drop the wand. Action - Cast Green-Flame Blade. Attack Swarm (the one attacking him) - (1d20+7)[20] Damage - (1d10+4)[6] + (1d8)[1] fire damage (reroll if 1) --> (1d8)[2] Green-Flame Blade Effect - Deal (1d8)[8] fire damage to swarm within 5ft of target swarm (reroll if 1, can use above roll) +4 cha so 12 total to secondary target. Flames of Phlegethos Effect - Ekemon is wreathed in flames, shedding bright light to 30ft and dim light for another 30ft, any creature within 5ft that hits him with a melee attack takes 1d4 fire damage. Sword of Wounding Effect - Inflict a wound on the swarm. The swarm takes 1d4 Necrotic damage at start of its turn for each wound inflicted on it, and can then attempt a DC 15 Constitution saving throw to remove all wounds.

Runa charges with a strange battle-cry, a sound reminiscent of the koel birds of her homeland. It sets her blade ashiver as she slices at fowl, discharging its energy into the flock before she falls back again.

Wol leaps from Runa's shoulder as she runs, harrying the chickens with his claws, then veers off to collect the fallen lantern.

Wol and Runa move in together, to the space south of Kynos and west of Ekemon. They target the swarm attacking Ekemon if it is alive and the one attacking Kynos if it is not.

Wol uses the Help action on the swarm, then flies to pick up the fallen lantern. After that, he will return to the square directly northwest of Mia.

Runa casts Booming Blade and attacks the swarm with advantage and Sneak Attack, then disengages and moves back 10 feet.

She followed the group, satisfied that the visit to the first barn wasn't a complete waste of time, and looked in..confusion? at the dread chickens attacking her friends.

"Stay back, clucking abominations!" - she says, as she invests some of them with holy light.

Wol swoops down to hand her the lantern, then flies back up to circle fifty feet above the party. Runa hooks it back onto the pack carried by Kynos and empties the remaining oil back into its flask. Her illusion winks out at about the same time.

"Onward then, let's see if there is something here, that isn't utterly horrible. Though I won't hold my breath for it."
Kynos took point again and made sure the others were within his aura.

The four of you head west, leaving the ghoulish chickens behind for now. Only a few moments travel westwards brings you to the intersection where the gravel path splits yet again to go north - but your Darkvision reveals another structure - a long building, this one made of painted wood, with windows. A stairway comes into view, and with it, a wooden front porch. Oddly, the porch and front door indicate that the house is raised about a foot and a half above the ground, with a white-colored lower tier of unusual-looking wood.

Further study will have to wait, however, as at the top of the stairway stands a slightly translucent figure of a tall man with broad shoulders, a dirty white shirt with rolled up sleeves, tan overalls, and dirty black boots. He’s holding a strange tubular contraption with a wooden triangle at the back end in his hands. The hilt and several inches of blade belonging to a shadowy black sword are sticking out of his chest. Kyros and Ekemon can just barely see him based on distance.

He turns to look at you with dead eyes. "This is my property, and I will protect it with deadly force. Be running along now. Five…four…."
