Fork kicked his boots off the ground and sped up into the air hoping to get a bead on the target.

Rumble ran over the ground towards the edge and when he spotted the flameharrow he inched backwards, but his tail was straight as an arrow and fork knew from looming at Rumble that it was there.

Fork didn't see it yet so he raised and aimed his crossbow in anticipation.

Ttharg is not afraid and charges towards the cliff edge. He doesn't head directly for the spot that the Flameharrow dropped down from, instead opting to look down from about 10ft away from where he saw it disappear.

Assuming he does he see it, he calls forth to Bahamut to shatter the creature and pours his destructive wrath into it, hoping to destroy it quickly.

Regardless of what happens, he then retreats 10ft away from the cliff edge.

    Spoiler

Move 20ft to look over the cliff edge.
Assuming I see the Flameharrow, cast Shatter at 4th Level, and use a charge of Channel Divinity to do max damage. Flameharrow needs to roll a Con Save. I'm not sure if it's technically made of inorganic material; so I'll roll twice (for Disadvantage), but you can take the first result if it's normal.
Flameharrow Con Save vs DC 15 = (1d20)[8]+Con or (1d20)[3]+Con, for 48 Thunder Damage, save for half.
Use remaining movement to move 10ft away from the cliff edge.

Nibum orders triceratool to get close and protect thraag realizing that thrag is concentrating on protection spell on servius. He then tells minicliff and pterodactool to detactch briefly. Minicliff takes a lap getting eyes on the flameharrow but that doesn't help much. Nibum casts warding bond through pteradactool on triceratool. Nibum man's the controls deftly and positions the tender where its longest tentacles can strike over the edge if anything comes out. Cauda if you see the flame harrow nab him with the grappling arms. Everyone i located the flame harrow (says position). Minicliff mission complete merges with triceratool but channeling that spell keeps pteradactool from remerging so he flies into the tender as it draws closer for protection. Nibum reaches and grabs a potion to hand pteradactool and the little bot takes it from him.

The flameharrow swoops up above the cliff edge again, and peeks over the top of the tender. Seeing that Servius has returned from the ethereal, it fires off a tight and intense ball of flame in his direction. The fireball briefly engulfs the wizard, but warded by the Protection from Evil, it cannot take hold and set him aflame.

Even as he swoops into view, Fork fires off his readied attack. Although the damage is minor, you can see that the series of attacks and spells has left the undead creature near destruction already. It tries to sweep back behind the cliff face, but a tentacle from the tender lashes out and holds him in place.

"I got him!" Cauda cries out in excitement. She takes a deep, steadying breath as she directs the remaining tentacles to aim the ballista at the restrained flameharrow.

    Spoiler: Summary

Readied Action from Fork: 16 to hit, for 6 damage.

The flameharrow decides to risk the opportunity attack to move back behind the cover of the cliff, but is hit by the tentacle for no damage, but is restrained.

Cauda uses her action aim to the ballista. She uses her bonus action for Steady Aim, giving Nibum advantage on the attack roll if he chooses to fire the ballista.

Fork didn't waste a second when he clocked the flameharrow getting grappled by the tentacles. He sped forward and while doing so gave a curt whistle which had Rumble running instantly too. As Fork got overhead the flameharrow, he unleashed his crossbow and fired two bolts. Rumble, in his jump, blew his frost on one of them and started to tear up the flameharrow from up close. As the second bolt hit the creature, Fork went invisible.

    Ttharg Krixkrux

Although having the tender grab the Flameharrow was useful in keeping it visible, it also meant that Ttharg has to be careful about what spell he cast, not wanting to damage the tender with another spell of explosive shattering. Seeing as the horror was almost defeated, Ttharg decides to stop focusing on the protection he had granted to Servius and instead to focus on striking the abominable thing down. He points to the sky, intones another prayer to Bahamut, and storm clouds begin to form above the battle. As soon as the clouds form, a streak of lightning arcs down and strikes at the Flameharrow; with Ttharg again channelling his God's destructive wrath through the bolt. He could also push the Flameharrow, but he chooses not to.

I'm also not sure if it's technically within 5ft if it has an extended grapple, but I could also position the bolt to be slightly behind the Flameharrow to avoid hitting the tender too; to avoid the worry altogether.).
Use my second Channel Divinity to do max damage on the bolt. Flameharrow Dex Save 15 vs (1d20)[19]+Dex for 30 Lightning Damage, Save for Half.

After Ttharg's lightning bolt and the barrage of attacks from Fork and Rumble, the ballista is the last the flameharrow can take. The massive bolt smashes, more than punctures, its clavicles and spine. The fanged, bejeweled head rolls off the shattered shoulders and is trampled under Triceratool's iron feet. A loose collection of bones and equipment is left wrapped in the tentacle's grip, but the serpentine lower body slips free and falls down the cliff, already disintegrating.

From the ruined skull, a phantom of mist and smoke escapes. This is a fetch, a formless spirit of fear and dread. It was conjured from the Shadowfell by the Katabatic Storm, and took the shape of the flameharrow, as a harbinger of Servius's death. Now it is shapeless once more, and for a moment, its misty form is a mirror held up to all of your fears. Then, with a moan, it vanishes back into the Shadowfell like smoke dissipating.

Operating the tentacle gingerly, Cauda sets a bundle of fabric and smoking bones down on the cliffside.

    Spoiler: Remains of the Flameharrow
    Show
Most of the remains of the flameharrow seem to have turned into smoke and blown away, but these few items must have been 'real' items it scrounged or received from the Cnidaria. It was keeping them in its rib cage.

    There is a Crystal Ball.

There is a harness or armor of matte grey metal and glowing flywheels that appears to have been woven through and around the creature's rib cage. You recognize it as a modified version of one of the Majari Devices. It seems less delicate, as evidenced by the fact that it hasn't sent you into another plane yet.

    Spoiler: Arcana 15+
    Show
It appears to have been stolen and refitted to protect the wearer from Banishment spells. The fetch did not want to be sent back to the Shadowfell. It seems to have been ruined for its original purpose, and it is hard to imagine how anyone with internal organs could wear it in this form.

There is a strangely heavy black stone, about the size and shape of the Crystal Ball. If a single individual tries to lift it without magical assistance, it is a DC 20 Athletics check to do so. With assistance from magic or another creature it is merely very heavy.

Spoiler: History / Religion 15+, Ttharg has advantage. If no one makes the check, Cauda knows.

It is a jurgen lifting stone, used as a test of manhood for young Yuan Ti of that race. This is not the largest one. It should be located on one of the black sand beaches not far from here.

Noticing the lifting stone should not be there and knowing that he'd never be able to lift it he urges triceratool to move it onto the tender so it can be returned Im sure someone is missing something so we ought to return that. Triceratool grab it and put it on the tender..

Triceratool gets its multifunctional horns under it rears it's neck back as it digs in shaking and shuttering in great effort. Tho it causes no real damage nibum feels it through the warding bond and winces/strains with his mount. Triceratool gets it off the ground and pauses frozen for what felt like a great while but merely a few seconds. Triceratool looks confused for a moment but resumes what he was told loading it onto the tender. He returns to nibums side bumping him much harder then intended. Nibum could tell something was up with that stone but hadn't the faintest idea what.

Nibum pulls out his anytool for examination the goggles spinning and adjusting to see what he can about the crystal ball knowing there's all kinds. He casts identify with the goggles

Fork landed next to the tender and the invisibility dropped. He told Rumble to fly a perimeter to see if they hadn't attracted any unwanted attention.

"Is everyone okay? Are you alright Servius?" He asked over the comms.

He pulled out his maps and notes and started looking at things like the weather and other relevant survival type things. When the group gathered he pointed at the two different routes. "This is by land, this one by sea." He clarified. "We could arrive at the site just before midnight if we're lucky. That's if we set out now. If we travel overseas we can make Marilfjord early tomorrow morning, gather some intel or supplies and then set out to the site. I prefer the sea-route myself, what do you all think?"

He looked over the items left by the Flameharrow. He didn't know half of them, and by the time he had identified the Jurgenstone it was already being stowed away. "Pretty sure those stones come from the beach. I've seen them used in taverns for contests between sailors, an' sometimes for pranks. Flameharrow might have just swept one up on it's way here, or it could be owned by someone. Mind you, it doesn't appear to have any markings of ownership on it; so it's difficult to say. As for the Ball..." Ttharg gestures at the Crystal Ball. "I be already full o' magic items, so one o' ye should take it."

"A morning arrival would give us time to rest, aye." Ttharg replies to Fork.

Cauda does not attempt to lift the jurgen-stone, but studies it, her old dreamy expression stealing back over her face as she does. "I wonder why he stole it... would Trionyx have wanted it, do you think?" Triceratool eagerly nudges her side when she says this, and she coils low to look the construct in the face. "Oh, he spoke to you? Hmm..." She tilts her head as if listening to Triceratool, although he is silent other than the whirring of gears and springs. Then she nods and rises.

"We must return this stone to its place on the beach. Then Sseth will be appeased, and we can be sure he will not join with Tiamat, no matter what Trionyx steals. The minor gods can grow jealous, you know... we must keep that in mind. But he has pledged his aid to Triceratool, so long as we return the stone."

It is hard to tell if this is the conventional Cauda weirdness or a real insight. Nevertheless, the five of you load into the tender and make your way back down the uplands to the beaches. A bit of poking around allows you to find the spot where the jurgen keep their magic stones and return it. It is a lonely stretch of black sand beach; the stones are unguarded. You can see why Sseth might be a bit on the jealous side.

From there, you turn the tender back into the bay, picking up speed as you skim over the water. Following the route Cauda mapped out beforehand, you easily navigate the peninsula separating the Capital Region from the Southern.

Sleeping in shifts in the shell is cramped, and your two serpentine crewmmates cannot do it at once. Sleeping out on the deck is more pleasant, except for the intermittent splash and spray of curious young sea serpents and the whuff of offended walruses. You have plenty of spell slots to keep the tender's battery topped up, and cruise into the tiny harbor of Marilfjord just as the sun erupts from Sunhome in the distance behind you.

Marilfjord is a village, the first location in Malatra you have visited outside of the urban core. It is set on a low, rocky coast, which rises abruptly into the cliffs of the fjords beyond. Unlike the cliffs you climbed near Malatra Qua, however, the cliffs here are broken into islands connected by low wooden bridges, which seem like the only way to ascend. The cliff-face beyond the village is sheer.

The terrain on top of those cliffs seem heavily wooded and dusted with snow, while the islands are more desolate. Viewed through the tender's magical sensors, you can see a brooding tangle of Conjuration magic around islands... the site of the wrecked convoy from inland.

Marilfjord's harbor is small and simple; there is only one real dock, where a Malatran ship flying the flag of the University is anchored. The rest of the harbor seems to be made up of fishing boats, which are a swarm of activity at dawn. You see both malisons and serpentine Yuan Ti mixed in the harbor, a breakdown of the segregation you have experienced in the city. Almost all of them have four arms.

The village itself is a mix of low stone houses, the rocks piled up by hand, and more recent weather-beaten wooden buildings. None of them show any of the exceptional architecture of Malatra Qua, except for a domed temple in the center of the village. Standing tall in front of this building is a sort of statue or totem of Maril, the goddess of the nagini and the mother of mariliths. The bottom and tallest segment is a pillar of stone, chipped in an elaborate pattern to imitate scales; the upper segments are wood, and seem to have been carved and replaced over the decades. Some are much more weathered than others. Each segment has two outstretched arms, and real instruments of war and building have been wired to the wooden hands. A hammer and a sword; a bow and a fishing spear; a skull and a lantern. At the top is a segment made of copper, plated green with a patina and with only the suggestion of a face. A bonfire burns perpetually in front of the totem as a beacon to the fishermen.

Cauda parks the tender tidily along the dock beside the university ship. You have attracted attention from the fishermen, but nothing official. A battered shack sits at the beach-end of the dock.

Servius packs away the Fulminating Treatise alongside his regular spellbook. Curled up within the cabin, he focuses on the crystal ball, and begins to repeatedly project his awareness out through space, looking at the bridges, the wreckage, and the interference that had previously been visible from the tender. He repeats the spell several times, methodically searching the area just as one would study an entire textbook.

Instead of targeting a creature, you can choose a location you have seen before as the target of this spell. When you do, the sensor appears at that location and doesn’t move.

Concentrating and making reference to the map provided by the Majari, you are able to get a good map of the bridge area and confirm that the damage to the convoy happened during that descent. It is hard to tell if the wreckage was purposely scattered around the islands, or the disruption of the delicate devices has blasted them through space. Several of them are in the water, and the currents may have contributed, too.

A few of the bridges and stairs are quite ancient and collapsed, but the main route climbing up to the cliff is in good repair. Each island is higher as you travel southward.

Debris is scattered widely, but with patient study you find all six of the remaining devices. Several of the crates have fallen into the shallows at the base of the islands. Only one, D3, of them seems to have been deliberately secreted on a tiny island on the other side of a ruined rope bridge. One of them (D4) seems to have been recovered and left for transport near the road down to Marilfjord. D5 lies in a bay sheltered on three sides by cliff walls; you will have to approach from the west if you come in by the water.

You do not see any bodies of the hostlers or of the expedition from the University. You also cannot see any rifts opened by the damaged devices -- the crystal ball only shows you what it is here in the material plane. The sensors of the tender indicate that there almost certainly some transplanar rifts around the crates that you cannot see in the crystal ball.

While Servius is poring over the crystal ball and the map, an elderly malison with four arms approaches the tender cautiously from the shack. It seems to have taken him quite a while to work up the courage. He is dressed in the same rough clothes as the villagers, but wears a cap with a badge of the Majari family crest on it. He stands out on the dock and hails the tender nervously. "No sssquidss wanted," he shouts in rough, accented Draconic. "Get along now. Yer not wanted here." He is clutching a wand of some kind in one hand.

He waggles the wand. ""They tol' me you'd be comin' but they didn't mention you had ssuch a sstrange boat. Mind if I check in with the universsity? Wand o' Ssending." If you don't stop him, he will cast the spell and have a quick conversation, then relax noticeably, the pits of his upper lip flexing as he nods to himself.

"All right then! Welcome to Marilfjord, then, folkss. Glad to have ye, glad to have ye... sstrange timess itss been lately. You can call me Djodi."

"No ssir, didn't ssee anything, not to ssee it. When the convoy dint arrive I called the universsity, and when the other fellass came out I took them far as the sstairss. And when they never come back I called the university again. But we've heard ssome sstrange thingss coming up from that way ssince all thiss began, here in the village. Aye, and sseen some sstrange thingss, washin' up on the shore."

"Mosstly I reckon itss thingss what were in the shipment... candless, glasss rods, that ssort of thing. But one o' our fisherss caught the damnedesst thing in hiss net t'other day... well, I better show ye, ssame as I showed the other fellas."

He begins to stump back towards his old shack. He returns with a rather odd fish. At first glance it resembles a large fish such as a salmon, covered with shiny silvery scales. However, on closer inspection the scales are made of actual metal, and there is a slot in the fish's belly from which a portion of a gear wheel is visible. Its eyes are balls of glass and it has no mouth. It looks like an attempt by Nibum to create a fish.

"Fella from the universsity said itss from ssomewhere outsside... ought to have gone back where it came from when it died, but it din't."

This is a clockwork fish from the plane of Mechanus, a living construct. It does not live in water, but travels along the gearpaths of Mechanus; travelling clockwise with the paths of the gears winds its mainspring, which uncoils at the end of its life to drive it counterclockwise against the flow of the gears back to its birthplace to spawn a new generation of fish.

Spoiler: Nature 20+, Arcana 15+ (Nibum has advantage)
    Show
It is not dead, but shuts down when it is out of contact with the cosmic drive train of Mechanus, no longer in constant motion.

"Fascinating." Fork said, trying to look smart but he had no idea what he was looking at. He set about looking at the route and general area for things to keep an eye on while travelling this terrain. He asked about loose rocks being a problem, or landslides. Geysers maybe.

"Apart from fishing, how does Marilfjord sustain itself?" He asked curiously. "And what's with the totem out front?" He was curious about the villagers connection to the land they lived on.

"The main bridgess and roadss out to the workshop are in good condition thesse dayss... the universsity payss to keep 'em sso, and I hire reliable local folk to maintain 'em and keep the pathss clear. 'Lesss whatever happened to the convoy damaged them, too, you shouldn't ssee much danger of landsslide or debris."

"Apart from fishin', we don't!" the old man chuckles. "What we can't get out of the ssea, we mostly tradess our fish for. That and the money from the Majari family. Thiss iss all their land, truth be told, but they're good landlordss."

He gestures at the totem with one of his four hands. "That there iss Maril. One of the daughterss of Apophiss, bit of a wild sstreak to her. Givin' with one hand, ssee, and takin' with the other. She am the mother of the nagini people."

"A bit of a wild streak" seems like an understatement. A chaotic evil deity, she is also the mother of the demons known as mariliths.

Ttharg studies the mechanical fish for a moment. "Aye, this be odd. This here fishy be from Mechanus; plane o' absolute law and order. These things swim through the gears o' the plane, not water. Now that it's not on Mechanus, it's not active; but returning it should give it motion again. Why is it here though?" Ttharg muses.

Ttharg then regards the totem with a level of unease. Whilst Djodi, at least, seems amicable, Ttharg hoped that the totem was here simply as a way of remembering heritage rather than actual worship.

"Servius, can we just grab the boxes out o' the water, or do we need to be careful with them and collect 'em in a special way?"

Nibum takes the fish examining it with his goggles. Triceratools face kinda shifts to something that might resemble a recliner of sorts. Pteradactool spreads out thier wings interlocking them while holding onto nibums belly in sort of a desk type way and nibum takes out a notebook to take notes in. Minicliff holds the fish for examination following nibums instructions. Submerged metal in salt water..... how does it prevent rust... lube gears.... propulsion... buoyancy.... where did it come from... why is it still here.... he writes furiously sloppy notes about various things. He asks Triceratool to hold up the harness that the flameharrow had and asks minicliff to hold the fish to it. Im suspecting that the cargo has either been tampered with to cause some such occurance as this fish or the cargo is somehow effecting this envirom. as an after thought almost absent minded lost in his thoughts about the fish and planar travel What plane is she associated with? What is her domains?

"Well, she's a goddess of givin' and takin', as I said," Djodi explains. "Justice, if you like, but not of the courts or the law. I s'pose she dwells with Apophis in the Fire Plane like t' other gods... she's a bit willful but still a child of the Father. Goddess of mothers and families too, strange as it might seem. She's Life, really. It's good to be alive, but damn if Life don't get its kicks in, too. Sometimes life is downright mean."

"It's like this, since you're curious... Apophis had many brides, and most o' them weren't too kind to their children. Maebe tried to wipe out the lamia, and Apophis stopped her. So they don't worship nobody but Himself and don't trust even their own kin, not truly. But Lolth never meant Maril any harm, just left her to be raised by her father and moved along, so we of the nagini are less fearful of other gods and of depending on one another."

Nibum, tinkering with the fish, you are able to see that it must have swam into this world from Mechanus via a planar rift, like the one you saw at the University. At least some of the devices must have been activated by the damage they took, resonating at random. They will need to be stabilized before you can transport them safely.

Ttharg could sense there was an opportunity to get Maril's blessing; or at least prevent Maril from entering the conflict on the side of Trionyx. "Aye, we encountered one o' those Jurgenstones an' received a blessin' from Sseth; returned it to the proper beach as well. We be on a grander quest to stop a tortle lad..." Ttharg explains their quest briefly. "Could we beseech Maril for their blessing in our endeavour? An' what would be the best way o' doing that?" Ttharg asks Djodi.

Djodi scratches his chin. "Now there be a funny thing. The head and the tail of our totem are permanent, but we replace the ssegmentss in the middle as they age... jusst before all this other trouble sstarted ssomebody sstole one of the ssegmentss. We carved a new one -- jusst reckoned it wass misschief -- but what you ssay about Sseth's sstones being taken givess it a different complexion. Might be wisse to find what became of it."

    Servius

Servius studies the fish. The plane of Law is said to be less dangerous, at least for those who understand its rules, compared to places like Limbo. Still, they'll need to move carefully. "It probably slipped in through a small planar rift. When we approach the devices, we will need to be cautious. We don't want to inadvertently travel elsewhere, or have just our fingers go somewhere else while we stay here.

I'll probably need to study each one before we get too close, to determine where the rifts might be. I can conjure a floating disc to carry them, although we'll need to still lift them onto them."

He tunes back in to the conversation with Djodi in time to hear that something was stolen. There's a good chance it lies in the direction they are going...

"Could ye describe the sections that were taken? Or are they exactly like the ones we see now?"

Ttharg appraises where the crates are in relation to the party. "I could control the water around some o' these crates to bring them to us, but not all o' 'em."
