Re: The Vega South Campaign
Kenner
Carefully climbing back down, the elf pats Smoke on the head once his feet are on earth. "I saw some giant spider webs to the north of us, not far. Maybe ten minutes? What do you all think?"
SpoilerNo worries! I think I made an assumption about the carapaces needing to be beetles. Would this make Chitin Armor (from Stormwrack) viable, then? That's some good stuff! Better than Hide armor, that's for sure, though a bit more expensive!
Also, I'm planning on castinglongstrider; nevermind, don't have it! I'll save the shilellagh and entangle for necessity, though casting the latter on giant spiders'll be fun AND ironic!I have returned!! Not that most of y'all know whom I am.

Re: The Vega South Campaign
After several minutes negotiating with the forest floor (a process greatly hasted by the assistance of two greataxes), the party finds the tree from which the sticky strands of web appear to be hanging off of.
Climbing the tree reveals a large spider's web, though long since abandoned as the display is covered in leaves, foilage and birds that flew into the web but never escaped. Of interest, a large web-sac appears to have been abandoned with the web.
The sac is an elipsoid about 4ft tall and 2 ft wide. It is composed of several strands of clear, thick spider silk that are slightly sticky to the touch. The object as a whole appears a ghostly shade of grey. It is connected to the main web by several long strands.
edit: The scene looks somewhat like this (after climbing):

Venderholfen
"Webs burn faster then living plants. It wouldn't burn the trees, but do what you think's best."
OOC: Pyromania IRL has taught me a lot about fire, as did years in the boyscouts. A forest like this, not constantly dampened and unnaturally warded against fire, has regular little brushfires. The trees should be healthy, and the webs should burn without doing more then scorching a few leaves. Worst case scenario, some of the mast goes up, burns quick, burns out. No threat.Life is a gamble, roll the dice. If your life is like cards, rig the deck.

Re: The Vega South Campaign
Palin grins widely at Venderholfen's suggestion. "Yes! let's burn it; there probably won't be much damage to the surrounding forest, and we'll get to see what's inside!" Palin says, his last reason with much more enthusiasm than the first.

Re: The Vega South Campaign
SpoilerI'm just going to let this internal discussion end itself. This is hysterical. Quality stuff guys. I think I'm going to quote some of it in my sig. At the least a quotes section when I finish the site for South Vega. Next post when you have agreed on a solution, or tomorrow after I wake up. In the event a conclusion has not been reached, something INTERESTING will happen. Bwah hah hah hah haa...

Re: The Vega South Campaign
Kurth shrugs. "If you say so." Nonetheless, he readies his greataxe, expecting to need to quickly hew a tree to extinguish the flames.
Spoiler
OOC: I wasn't really expecting much chance of a forest fire myself, but Kurth is less certain about the possibility. :) Let's burn it!

Venderholfen
"Alright." Says Venderholfen, as he slings his axe, and pulling forth his flint and steel, he sets fire to the flammable webbing, before storing away his firemaking kit, and pulling forth his greataxe.
SpoilerEdit: Whew. Just realized it was good I put flint and steel down, didn't even think about the general lack of steel, it's just sort of an automatic item now.Last edited by Seffbasilisk; 2008-09-10 at 11:31 PM.

[Aetheas]
Now this healer was no druid, but despite that this talk was not fun, was even cruel! The mere thought of harming anything churned his stomach, but this trip was necessary--despite it all.
"Now why are we talking of burning or even hurting these wonderful woods? We run the chance of killing more than our goal. Fire as only a last resort, please."Characters:

Re: The Vega South Campaign
SpoilerI don't think you need steel to start a fire with flint. It just helps. An item of the same cost will function just as well.
The bit of web hanging from the main web starts to burn quite wildly, but the spread of the fire causes the small off-shoot to fall to the floor before the flames can reach the main web. The ignited strands land on a pile of brush and leaves, which start to smolder and smoke.
SpoilerA simple kick to the ground would put this out. You will need to climb the tree to get better access to the main web.

Re: The Vega South Campaign
Palin watches the webs burning, an expression of awe on his face. He steps back wordlessly to take in the entire scene, and then takes out his violin and begins to play, not taking his eyes off of the flames.

SpoilerI think Palin failed to notice that the main web didn't catch fire... :)
Kurth immediately sees the web smoldering on the ground and quickly stamps it out. "Looks like we're going to have to climb up closer to the main web whether we want to burn it or just cut it."

Venderholfen
Not giving up so easily, Venderholfen pulls a torch from his belt, and pulling off it's leather cover, sets flint and steel to work lighting it. Then stowing the flint and steel, he aims, and hurls the torch into the main webbing, right by the web-sac.

Re: The Vega South Campaign
Spoiler...Seriously?? Rotflmmfao
The torch strikes true and the webs begin to burn. As the structural integrity of the web decays, the large sac falls to the ground after hitting several tree branches with a loud thud at each hit. Some of it seems to have charred, but overall is relatively unharmed.
The webs above continue to burn themselves out, burning strands falling to the ground and surrounding the party. It won't take long for a fire to start with this underbrush...

Re: The Vega South Campaign
Spoiler[rant]Sorry...not meaning to mess with your game and all...just...have you ever burned web? It's not that flammable to things around it...and it was going off that knowledge that I set the webs alight. I figure Venderholfen's been living in this setting for as long as I have IRL, only he's forced by necessity to be even more intimatly acquainted with nature, as evidenced by his four ranks in Survival...by having the flint and steel in starting gear, it's assumed he's had them for some time...wouldn't he know how the webbing would burn? [/rant]Life is a gamble, roll the dice. If your life is like cards, rig the deck.

Re: The Vega South Campaign
SpoilerYou aren't ruining my campaign. Far from it. I find this to be incredibly funny. All the same though. How often do you set fire to webs made by man-sized spiders? You guys can burn the webs down. The forest is probably not going to catch fire. Especially when I do this.
Roll for initiative.
Kurth needs to make a will save.

But while we are on the subject, the enormous webs created by the Monstrous Spider should behave like those created by the web spell. The spell description includes nothing of the web falling apart during burning to ignite surrounding brush. Thats simply what I think would happen in this particular situation. I'll test my theory in the lab later today.

Without realizing what he was doing, Kenner drew his club and was about to strike Vanderholfen when the bundle fell to the ground. "Did it even occur to you that what was inside might be damaged?" he snarled. He moves to stamp out the flames on the ground before they can cause real damage or spread.
