Default He's finally been unchained.

Zan backed off, seeing as how he failed to hurt the bodyguard, and hadn't been swung at yet. Amethyst speaking to him infuriated him in two ways... one, he realized that she was right and that the bodyguard could not leave. Second, he was wrong for being caught up in his rage. Unfortunately, realizing this didn't make things better, and he ran towards the volatile situation with the fire shouting.

"If we meet again, you'll pay for your deeds with your blood on my blade! UNDERSTAND ME!?" He trembled greatly, trying to think about how he could satiate the fire...
I can't get lost in my anger... if only I had more ale, though... but still, I can create water to dull the flames!

Eodrick pounds at the old guy with his oversized axe and saves everyone from having to go through another long conversation about the merits of accepting surrenders or otherwise as he the old guy falls back from the assault against the wall and then forward and to the ground where he lies unmoving and bleeding.

Victor continues untying the halflings. They are out of any immediate danger.

Zan moves past Huey and the bodyguard and into the barrel room in time to see Eodrick's rage over his dog. The dog looks beyond help. The stack of bedding in the corner nearest him and as much of the rest of the room as the spell covers becomes the target of his Create Water spell. The room near him is covered in a short torrential downpour of pure rain water, arresting the oil's fire and making the bedding damp. This appears to be the worst of the fire put out although half the room has small licks of flame creeping along shelves or barrels or sticky looking stains on the floor.
After Amethyst's speech the bodyguard frowns and remains silent for a moment. Then,

bodyguard:
Yeah, that's an interesting .....
I guess I might could lend a hand with the fire thing.

Huey, still on the ground:
Did the boss get away?

Amethyst and the bodyguard follow Zan into the barrel room. There's a couple of (now) damp grubby blankets amongst the bedding there. In fact there's some other bits and pieces of cloth and leather scraps, pieces of wood, some paper and some other rubbish swept up there. All of it quite burnable if not so wet. The blankets seem suitable for choking the small flames around the room so when Amethyst sets to putting out the flames the bodyguard follows behind her doing the same.

So we're out of initiative again. If you want to say you put out the rest of the fire that's fine.

Halfling woman:
'Es dead is 'e?

The worst of the fire that is left is the bedding in the far corner where the halflings were tied up. Instead of stamping it out with her bare feet the halfling woman snatches up a broom and starts beating at it. But in that corner there's nothing else to burn but the bare stone walls and the tiled floor. She could easily let the straw burn itself out but instead attacks it with a passion while Victor unties the other halflings.

Default Letting the fire be doused.

A sigh was let out from the cleric, having a mix of many things: relief that the fire was put out, sadness over the charred remains of what was most likely Dolan, far beyond any healing he could muster, the disappointment over his built and remaining anger, and the fact that he was completely out of ale in his flask. Seeing that Amethyst was, amongst others stomping out the flames, he breathed again raggedly and walked back into the other room where Huey was.

"Allow.. m-me to put it this way. W-when it comes to your boss, I've seen more wholesome bowls of st-stew. You... you can get up now." He began to repart his hair, which had grown messy when he tugged on it out of his frustration. To him, the violence was all over now, and as long as he didn't have to be too close to the bodyguard he'd be just fine.

Having said his piece with everything that had happened, and just now finally calming down, Zan wearily stepped back down along the hallway to the room where everybody else was. What happened then, though, was something that brought severe shock to the cleric's mind.

"S-S-SANDRA!" Quivering wildly, he scrambled for his flask and wailed when it was empty. Shoving it back to it's place for now, Zan hit his knees over Sandra's body, his hands unsteadily moving over her.

Health check-up:
The old guy is dead, as is Eodrick's dog. Sandra, Victor and Eodrick are still badly wounded. It seems that Sandra was holding up largely on the basis of the bezerk rage and when it ended came close to collapsing, but she is in no danger now. The bodyguard is still badly wounded too. All four of them are fit for duty though. The halflings seem physically fine although most of them seem to be in a state of shock and jittery about what is going on. One seems to be sort of in charge and has it together.

The fire is put out after a few minutes except in the far corner where the halflings were where the straw bedding burns itself out, leaving a lot of smoke in the room, some escaping through the bust trap door.

Sheila makes her way down and repeats the story that her father has told Sheila and Fin upstairs while this has been going on.

Just a little over two weeks ago, Shamus was approached by the weaver's guild about a "special" job. This was an "offer you can't refuse" sort of situation although they didn't make any over threats. The weaver's guild reserves the right to make members work on certain jobs although usually it's not a right they claim. However this job was a very secretive one and once at the site Shamus found he was an effective prisoner. Although he was never tied up the message was that if word of the job got out the common labourers (meaning the halflings) would have to be executed "for security reasons". So in this way he was "discouraged" from leaving the work site without it ever being overt. He did manage to demand that the goffer guy pick up his tools and some person items from his shop and drop off a note off at the shop to let Sheila know why he was missing. Of course that note was not delivered but the fact that the man went back to the shop and took some items might have helped in tracing the trail the adventurers eventually followed.

The work itself was with leather. They had Shamus working on the fine details of four sort of leather armor clad dummies and the dummies had daggers stitched in as part of their design in an odd way. Most of the big stuff had been done already when he got there.

The leader of the halflings, or at least the one who seems to be mothering the others now, and one of the oldest two, says her name is Rosalind. She says she is not sure how long they've been held but for many weeks. It seems the halflings are all related. At first they were glad to get work as times have been hard since the war, and the pay offered was good, even if the conditions were suspicious. But after a while it became apparent they were prisoners effectively.

She starts coughing over the smoke and asks if they can all go outside since they haven't had any fresh air in weeks.

At this point you can skip forward and I'll have everyone take the 3 remaining prisoners back to the guild HQ somehow and have someone else, most likely Matthew, deal with clean up / fall out. Or you can look into some other aspects of this episode before you move on. If nothing else I would definately grab the old dead guy's magic ring but there are numerous loose ends, some of which will probably remain loose for a while, some not.

Some of his shakiness managed to subside as soon as Zan figured out that Sandra would be okay, especially now that she was able to stand and move. Wiping some of his sweat off, he turned away without being able to say anything to her. He seemed to be out of words for anybody, at least in common. Things were just too stressful..

He took a few steps towards the exit, but as he neared Eodrick, Zan carefully put a hand on his shoulder and spoke a bit in Dwarvish.

Amethyst thinks about searching the inn. A professional top to bottom search would take about ten man hours. A brief scan through only the barrel room would take her five minutes or so.
Spoiler
Show
Searching is a pain. Each 5x5 square takes an action to search (6 seconds) and you usually want to take 20 (two minutes) and the 50 x 30 room you're in more or less would be 2 hours to search. Then there's the other 3 rooms and corridor on this floor and the upper part of the inn and the courtyard. For one person to fully search the whole thing would be about 10 hours I guess. That's for the gold standard of searching top to bottom.

Ways to shorten this are many. You can eg roll 3 times per search instead of taking 20. That gives you something like 5 pips less on your score and you can make up for some of that with two helpers (the above assumes the best searcher is doing all the work) dependng on their scores giving you a +2 or maybe a +4 much of the time with aid other. or you could divide the labour so that some areas are searched comprehensively by people other than your best searcher, which also lowers the DC you make. Roughly your going to go 4 times faster for accepting a penalty of about -5 to -2 on your "gold standard". Of course you could skip searching some areas altogether.

You could also use the aid other with the "gold standard" and beat the gold standard by 2-3 points.

I think Eodrick is the best searcher (+4). So you're around DC 24 there.

Matthew is still the best searcher in the guild I think (+9) Do you really need to hit a 30 DC search everywhere? A detect secret doors spell can obviate some of that need because generally they are the things that hit that high a DC.

So basically how much time do you think you'd want to put into it? And how much hassle getting help from other folks? It's not like you're going to get wandering monsters here (or is it?) OTOH the lightest of searches (taking ten; one action per 5x5) in the room they appear to have used most might reveal useful stuff and would take just a few minutes (6 minutes divided by number of searchers).

Anyone? Moving along then. If I've missed anything like more questioning of the halflings before they scarper back to West Bridgeport mention it and I'll edit. Also if anyone else wanted to stay behind.

The halflings seem keen to get away back home as soon as possible and don't react well to being told not to go anywhere. Fin in the end gives up and says they should at least travel with the adventurers as far as the guild house "for protection". The prisoners are tied up despite the protestations of the bodyguard. The body of their former boss, wraped in his cloak, is placed on the light cart and pulled by one of the horses. Zan checks on the wounded and does what he can. Most of the adventurers head back to the HQ with Fin, the cart, prisoners, the freed halflings and Sheila's dad.

Amethyst and Eodrick remain behind. Amethyst to search the inn properly and Eodrick initially to bury his dog. Amethyst starts by searching through the barrel room and she quickly makes an interesting discovery.

While searching the room Amethyst almost stumbles upon a large invisible object. Tracing over its surface reveals it to be a large cause cloth thing like a canvas tarpaulin. Amethys pulls at it trying to find an opening and reveals under it four (visible) suits of armor.

A little investigation of the invisible tarp shows that anything wholly covered by it become invisible.

The suits of armor are a bit odd. They are basically leather but where the arm holes ought to be there are daggers firmly sewn into the leather. In fact they are more like headless dummies with daggers than suits of leather armor. Amethyst is no expert on leather working but it is clear that no expense has been spared in the manufacture (some of the thread appears to be golden for example) and the work is top quality -- whatever they are supposed to be.

Zan would've found some peace in at least helping Eodrick bury his dog, but chances were he wanted to be alone. A holy blessing would have to wait, then, and there were more pressing matters. The entire way back to the guild, Zan just made sure about the safety (and secure holding) of Huey and the bodyguard that spiked his anger to one side of the emotional scale. His eyes avoided Sandra, who had brought him over to the scared side too sharply.

He already decided what he'd do when he got back to the guild hall: Secure anybody needing to be secured, pray that none of the halflings knew him from that disasterous day, drink until Ana cuts him off, then hide in his bunk with a book.

Amethyst

Odd.... Amethyst thought to herself as she studied the strange objects underneath the tarp. Recovering the armor with the tarp, Amethyst made sure to mark the thing so she would remember where the stuff was after she finished her investigation of the rest of the inn.

Finding nothing of interest in any of the other rooms that didn't contain Eodrick and his deceased dog Amethyst went back for the armor and tarp. Carefully placing the tarp where she could find it again she started taking the suits of armor over to the door in order to take them back with her. Having moved all four suits just outside the door and covering them with the nifty tarp, Amethyst made her way back to the last room on her checklist.

Spoiler

I'm going to assume Eodrick has removed himself and the corpse of his dog by now as she has taken sometime to search the building.

She takes a look into the room, remembering seeing some of the halflings trying to stamp out one of the bed cushions when it was in no danger of causing any damage to the rest of the building she makes a mental note to check that before she leaves. Finding nothing of any interest she starts walking over to the cushion, only to pass by the body of 'the boss'. She makes a quick search of his possessions and takes anything she finds that looks like it might be worth anything to anybody before heading over to the bedding.

I was curious about the bedding thing. Also I mentioned the boss guy because I remember you saying something about taking his ring and couldn't recall if anyone did. Anywho, whether I find/pick-up anything else she is just going to go to one of the horses and secure her findings to one and wait for Eodrick before heading back. What are the approximate dimensions of the tarp, and does it become visible when its not doing its job (thinking something like the cloak of invisibility from Harry Potter) or is it always invisible? Also the thought just crossed my mind. Who has which parts of that necklace/crown thingy? All I can remember is that Shiela and Iva had them last as far as I can recall.

Jerris is not around when the Adventurers get back so Eldon and Matthew set about organising things.

The prisoners are placed in the remaining three cells under the HQ, next to Klesha. The bodyguard is the only one armed with more than a knife. He has a shortsword and a number of master work daggers and a magic potion. Also some sort of magical cloth armor. Similar magical armor is found on the body of the old boss and in addition to the magic ring he turns out to have a magical necklace and some other mundane jewelry worth about 400 gold. Matthew sets about the task of calculating the exact value of the loot in his capacity as treasurer for the rest of the afternoon working down in the basement.

Sheila escorts her dad back home.

Fin continues on with the halflings; escorting them home, or as close as he can go with the ban on travel across the Bridge.

Ana seems to pay special attention to Zan even though others were wounded worse. She seems concerned and even breaks her usual silence to say, "It's very dangerous what you do". Zan drinks more than usual that evening as she seems reluctant to say no.

Despite a largely successful mission nobody seems to be celebrating.

Eodrick returns separately (leaving before Amethyst finishes searching).

Spoiler
Show
We'll be off again soon on something completely different and loose ends will be stuff we can come back to in the future so don't feel everything has to be finished now.... I believe that Sheila has the magical necklace and headband thing that was taken from the dead druid and its cat companion and allows the wearer of one to see what the other sees.

Amethyst finishes up searching and finds nothing more except some papers that were part of the pile of straw and rubbish that was nearly all burned by the fire. Some of the papers are too damaged to be legible easily and the paper is delicate and crumbly from the fire and heat. The book is mostly intact but appears to be in some foreign language or code. However from illustrations inside it, the book appears to be directions to do with the suits she found. There is also a letter in an envelope that Amethys senses might be destroyed if not handled very delicately. The outside of the letter has some markings on it she doesn't recognise, the word "Lauden" and a seal (broken).

The tarp is large and quite heavy - about 20 feet square. If you get underneath it then its underside becomes visible to you, but unfortunately the canvas is too thick to see through. Amethyst hypothesises that if the material was sheer like silk so you could see through it when held close to your eye, and there was less of it then perhaps you could drape it over yourself and use it to sneak about unseen. As it however the tarp is large and stiff and would certainly be difficult to move with besides which the canvas can't be seen through when you're under it (regardless of which way up it is), so you'd need to look through a "gap" which would be visible to people. It does seem to be invisible at all times with one exception. When it is lifted fully off the ground and not used to wrap some other object and not tightly folded up the canvas becomes visible. Because of its size it is quite hard for one person to lift it off the ground without folding it, or rolling it up and Amethyst only discovers this by accident when trying to "whip" the tarp flat before measuring its size, and discovering that the tarp becomes visible for a moment before it settles to the ground again.

The daggers secured into the suits of armor appear to be masterwork quality (as does the rest of the work).

Amethyst secures the suits in the tarp and uses the two remaining horses at the inn to transport them to the Adventurers' HQ late that night when she's finished up searching. She carefully carries the letter and book herself. She arrives via the back alley and puts the horses in the stables. Only Bil the night watchman sees her, and only after she puts the horses away.
Next morning, Eldon does indeed seek out Sandra in the women's quarters, having healed up Victor and Eodrick the night before.

Father Eldon:
Well this is in danger of becoming quite a habit....

Seeing Amethyst still asleep he cuts short his rebuke.
Downstairs over breakfast, Matthew tells Zan that he expects the work on his staff to be completely later that day, before the group sets out again on their "official" mission to find Felix Oster.

Default Seen better days and far better nights.

Zan looked up at Ana, listening to her words. Neither had ever been a big talker, and even though Ana was now gifted with speech, nothing had changed. He could still understand her with or without words, and her eyes carried a lot more to him than her voice. Mulling over a few more ales than usual can do something strange to a mind as well, and for the first time in the past few days or so, Zan really took the time to listen; He took the time to truly and honestly pay attention and hold onto every word that was being said.

At the latter end of his stay with the ale, he made a gesture that was somewhere between a nod and shake of the head.
"Y-you're... proven right j-just by what happened today. ... But it's v-vital what you do." With that, he did his best to manage a true smile of contentness and wished Ana a good night.
---
The next morning at breakfast, Zan seemed to have gotten enough sleep to at least be refreshed (even if it wasn't as much as he would have liked).
"I-I'm glad to hear it! The weapon I borrowed from the armory s-served me well enough, but to be back with a weapon I'm familiar w-with would be nice." A mental image of the scythe and staff flashed through his mind a short moment.

Ana is helping in the kitchen this morning which is great news for those who are not entirely happy with Vlax' cooking. Apparently Jerris is not back yet so Ana and Zaara unexpectedly have a morning free. The gnomish librarian is talking to Matthew and Ana is humming to herself. She seems in good spirits this morning and somehow that makes the whole guildhouse seem cheerier. All except Berwin of course, who always looks like a professional funeral mourner.

Matthew, to Victor:
You know that ring you guys brought in yesterday seems to have some protective abilities against fire, although not enough to go around immolating yourself with it safely. It's pretty powerful; you can use the fireball effect once a day. That guy must have been quite wealthy. Have you decided how to split up the stuff he had yet?

Ana brings Zan some of Vlax' cooked dwarven sausage. She puts on a scolding look and wags her finger, "So you prefer Vlax's cooking to mine now?" but she winks and smiles at him. Then she sort of bites at her lip a little and hurries back to the kitchen.

The only other Adventurer around this morning is Jeff. The third team must have left without Vlax after all for some reason. Ulysses and the rest of them. Sheila is not about; probably decided to stay with her dad at the shop overnight. Good idea under the circumstances.

Ana and Vlax reappear with the last of the breakfast cooked; their own food. Ana sits down next to Zan. It seems like she's going to say something again but the doesn't.

The cleric looked up, surprised and for a moment, rather gullible. "B-B-But I nev-..." He blinked when he saw her smile and wink, and he immediately relaxed.

Water was always good in the morning, especially to clear a dry night throat (and to get rid of any headaches). As rare as the occurrences were, Zan occasionally drank something that wasn't ale. He had just finished washing some food down when Ana sat down again. He gave her a few moments since it looked like she was going to say something, but nothing.

"R-really, though... thank you a l-lot for the food. He nodded towards Vlax to give him the same thanks before turning his eyes back to Ana. "F-funny how recovering from d-dire.. um, situations can help.. help open your eyes to all the l-little things." He got a little red in the cheeks as he smiled again.

Amethyst

With a mighty stretch Amethyst awoke to find that Father Eldon and ..... I should really get these names down better... well her best guess would have been they were talking and decided to stop due to her sleeping.

With a quick thought she had her magical garments change from her silk sleepwear to a more appropriate set of garments, well maybe barely more appropriate, before rolling out from under the covers. Don't let me interrupt your conversation I'll just be going.

Downstairs she heads over to Matthew, I apologize if I am interrupting anything, but I think you might want to come with me. I found a few things back at the inn that you might want to take a look at.

She continues on into the stables to uncover the armor and keep track of the tarp.

Matthew goes to follow Amethyst out of the common room and to the stables. Zaara takes her leave and heads back to the library. Vlax, Victor and Jeff are talking about something or other quite loudly.

Ana:
Archmage Jerris.., I mean the guildmaster... has been kind to us both; to Zaara and me.

Ana looks around a little conspiratorially before addressing Zan again,

D.. do you know much about him? How long he was imprisoned? How old he is?

Whether from the unease at speaking so much or the delicacy of the subject matter, Ana flushes a little and looks down at her plate.
Matthew and Amethyst head out to the stables. Eodrick and Berwin are in the garden disussing something...

Berwin:
"...of course she was cremated and he was buried in situ, so there's been no need for..."

At the stables Amethyst shows Matthew the armor. He casts a Detect Magic spell and determines that the suits are not magical, "But all those eight daggers are. At a minimum you're looking at 4000 each suit just for those." No surprise that the tarp is magical ("weak transformation magic"). None of this is news to Amethyst and Matthew doesn't have any idea about the armor's purpose. "If it had head and feet I'd say it was a golem, if it wasn't stuffed with innards I'd say it was armor.".

Assuming you want to say she did her own detect magic the night before

Something he says though gives Amethyst a clue about the book she found. Wizards always think they are so smart! The book reminds her of stories about wizard's writing their secrets in coded pseudo-language not to keep them hidden so much as to make sure only those "worthy" can translate them. Having already recognised the languages used to create the code Amethyst reckons she could probably crack the code, given time.

Default Tricky subject, but I wouldn't know.

Zan cocked his head, looking at her. One of the first wonders he had was why she was blushing in the first place, but it wasn't his place to figure out. When he talked, he suppressed his voice by quite a bit.

"Erm... I d-don't know much about him, except that w-when we met him, he thanked Boccob. We w-weren't sure whether or not he worshiped m-my god or was trying to earn favor. I d-don't know much but he s-should be a lot older than me." The memories of discovering Jerris were overshadowed by the sprouting of the tree and almost being eaten by a red dragon, so it was hard to pick up on the little things.
"I-If you w-w..." He sighed, taking a moment to gather himself; he wasn't in his element when talking, either. "S-Sorry... if you would like, Ana, we c-can talk later in a more p-private setting."

Sarah takes a deep breath It isn't by choice if that's what you might be implying. she slides up to more of a sitting position in the bed I would have been fine if that old man hadn't been a spell user. Not use to fighting those and he almost burnt me alive, didn't get it as bad as that poor dog. she looks over at the other person sleeping in the room then at the cleric Can you heal me so I can start practicing again, I must be really rusty if I'm having so much trouble with fights.

Ana nods.
Finishing breakfast she starts clearing the tables.
Father Eldon's head is a little higher than Sandra's until she sits up in bed. The halfling cleric reaches out to heal his patient, with a couple of separate spells until the wounds are gone. With Amethyst gone downstairs Eldon speaks more freely.

Father Eldon:
I was not referring to your injuries but to your refusal to get healed last night along with the others when you all got back. It's not that I mind coming up here to see a patient, but I wonder about you and this funk you seem to get into, if you are severely wounded.

Default He's good at waiting.

Zan smiled gently and stood up, pushing in his chair and any empty chair that hadn't been placed back by anybody else. Sometimes wordless conversations were better than word-packed ones, a lesson that had no better teacher than Ana.

Besides the current situation, he was also thinking about the weapon that he would be receiving soon... and he started to dread it. The scythe was not a beloved weapon, it was a symbol of animosity and self-admonishment for failing to accomplish his goals thus far, and the staff was simply intimidating.

Sandra turns and looks at Amethyst as she wakes up. It wasn't until after she left the room and the halfling cleric talked that she spoke Well when I was in the military, we didn't exactly have a cleric who could come to us when ever we wanted. I didn't have any life threatening injuries so I'm use to waiting for those in more dire need of care to be taken care of first before myself. Sometimes I only had someone trained in mundane healing to treat my injuries. Sandra moves around smiling that her injuries were gone and gets out of bed Like you I hope this doesn't become a common thing. I haven't fought anything for a while now, and the last fight I was in was a group of bandits who tried to rob me on my way home from my unit. She starts to put on her armor and then gets her sword and shield.

Amethyst

Hmm, I wonder... Would you mind bringing one of these suits to the library and waiting for me there. I have a couple other things that you might want to have a look at, one of which may explain these if I hit my guess. Figuring Matthew for the type that wouldn't say no Amethyst heads back up stairs to retrieve the book and letter. Upon her retrieval she takes extra caution making her way to the library so as not to damage the letter.

Later in the Adventurers' Guild library:

On the table is one of the leather suits / armor / golem things that Amethyst retrieved. There's also a few other items from the recent battle at the inn. Two cloth vests, the ring from the old guy, an amulet and a couple of daggers.

Matthew, to himself:
I wonder if this thing is working properly; She should have tried to contact me already. He is fiddling with a lady's hand mirror.
