[4e] Beginners: Scales of War

The Elsir Vale has seen it's share of blood. Nearly two decades ago, the Red Hand of Doom marched on the city of Brindol, charged with it's ultimate destruction. Were it not for the timely interjection of a group of adventurers, the Red hand would have succeeded.

Now, goblin raids have started anew, and the city of Brindol has once again called for adventurers to maintain the peace.

You came to Brindol with a trade caravan and were pointed to a tavern called "The Antler and Thistle." Inside, there is a gentle hubbub as patrons stare idly into their ales. A table at the back of the room seats three men involved in a game of dice. The barman stares at you for a moment as you enter, then goes back to polishing his glasses.

Ghaunal heads over to the dice game interested in making some easy money. He asks the three men if he might be able to join them. A game even if it wasn't for money, sounded good right about now.

Alrik takes a seat at the bar, tossing a silver piece on the counter.

"A glass of ale, please."

Taking a look around the room, Klick spots an open table towards the back. Feeling slightly uncomfortable, he walks quickly to the back, or at least as quickly as his gear will allow him to go. Getting to the table, he sets his shield and his javelins against the table, while keeping his axe strapped to his waist. His chainmail clinks as he eases his substantial size into a chair that was not designed with his kind in mind. Taking a deep breath he finally relaxes.

"Ah... finally I get to sit down. I wonder if there will be any groups here that are looking for a leader of some kind to join them... I could certainly use the money." Klicks says quietly to himself.

Ghaunal (I just now noticed you changed your name)

The gamblers in the corner scoff at you. "Adventurer? Pssh, I guess it means you have coin. Take a seat and I'll tell you how to play."

The game is "Going to Town." At the start of each round you throw a copper piece in the centre of the table. You roll 3d6 (use the [rollv][/roll] function) and keep the single highest dice, then roll 2d6, keeping the highest one, then the last d6. Add up the numbers and that is your score, the person with the highest wins the copper. If there is a draw, those with the same high score can either put an extra coin in the centre or withdraw.

The bartender silently slides the silver into his pocket. He fills a mug with ale and rests it on the counter.

Ghaunal sat down and picked up the dice. "I prefer card games, mostly because I can never seem to have dice roll in my favor." he said with a smile. He gave them a quick toss.

"Ooh, a 16? Gonna be a hard one to beat." He picks up the dice and rattles them in his hand for a few seconds before letting them fly across the table. "Damn, a 14." The second man rolls his dice, showing an 11. "That's not going to do it." The third man rolls his dice and smiles. "It looks like we are on a draw." He flips a copper piece across his fingers. "Gonna roll again?"

The gambler stops smiling when he sees your roll. "A 15. Dammit, I hate playing with adventurers, they all seem to know dice for some reason." As his final dice falls, he pushes the coins toward you. "That's just the way they fall."

He picked up his winnings and said to the man, "It's an ill omen when I win with dice. My luck has surely run out now." He walked over to the bar and saw about getting something to drink.

A black cloaked being enters the tavern, quickly scurrying over to an empty seat near the wall he sits down and tells the barman I'll have an ale please in a low resounding basso voice.

Grey enters the tavern, almost stumbling, with a large grin at the bartender and an excited look on his face. He eyed up the men gambling and an plan formulated in his mind.
"One mead please," Grey asked with a smile as he payed the man. Taking the mead he hid it under his cloak for a moment casting predistignation to make the mead taste but not smell of poison as the smell of mead over powers it.
He walks over to the tallest of the men at the gambling table and with a smile hands him the beer "here, incase I want to play later."

If the man drinks the mead Grey tells him it is poisoned and that Grey is the only one who can cure him but he will do so it if he gets one of two things.

"tell me everything you know about this place, all the dirty little secrets or point me to something or someone who needs my help, not you of course."

Grey knows this seems wrong but in all truth he is doing it to help others and all he has done is scare a man who spends his time gambling in a tavern.

Feeling a rumble in his stomach, Klick slowly gets out of the chair. The chair groans again as if it is glad for the enormous weight to be lifted off of them. Klick slowly walks over towards the bar, stretching out muscles that had grown stiff in the few minutes he had been sitting while keeping one eye on his gear still leaning against the table.

"Bartender, a mug of ale and a plate of whatever is ready to eat," Klick says to the man behind the counter. The smells wafting out of the kitchen cause his empty stomach to grumble even more. "How much will that be, good sir?" Klick inquires, not wanting to burn the little gold he had too quickly.

Dice Table

"Why thank you stranger." The gambler takes a long gulp of the mead. As you inform him of the situation, his face turns ashen and he stammers "Is this some kind of-" The man is cut off as the door to the bar is beaten from it's hinges and a group of four hobgoblins rush into the bar. "By the Gods, goblins. If you want to help someone, help us!"

Bar

"For a full meal, that will set you back-" The bartender too fails to finish his sentence as the door is busted from it's hinges. The hobgoblins rush in, weapons drawn and ready for a fight. They seem taken aback when they see several well armoured individuals sitting near the bar, but the pound their swords against their shields and prepare for a fight.

Ghaunal's shuriken whirls past one of the hobgoblin's head, embedding itself in the door frame. Alrik's spear finds its mark, slamming through the goblins throat. He gives a short gurgle and collapses. Two of the hobs look at their dead comrade, then at Alrik. Almost in unison they sweep forward swinging their blades at the fighter. The remaining goblin begins terrorising the other patrons. As he stabs one man through the chest, Grey's bolt flies past him, shattering the window.

Seeing the fight break out, Klick yells out, "Spearman, quick, strike the other goblin near you!" After calling out his command, Klick runs over towards the table and grabs his shield first.

OOC: Hope you don't mind if I made Alrik's rolls for him. I figured it was the attack I made so it would make sense. Though if I got anything wrong on Alrik's basic attack, be sure to correct me. I was going solely off of his Mythweaver's sheet.

Barfight

At Klick's order, Alrik thrusts his spear through goblins chest, letting it's body crumple to the floor. Draco's blast hit's true, thrusting the hobgolin back and it collapses, eldritch smoke rising from it's corpse.

As the shuriken flies through the skull of the last remaining hobgoblin, the room is oddly quiet for a few seconds. The silence is shattered as one of the glass windows is smashed and a very crazed goblin leaps through onto the table. Laughing maniacally, he throws a torch at the bartender, and the bottles of alcohol around him.

Three more hobgoblin grunts enter, one from the door and the other two from the eastern window. The first hobgoblin, seeing his comrades piled on the floor, lets out a primal scream and runs at Alrik. The other two start swiping and killing any patrons standing around.
