Those slaves who deviated even slightly from the secret knowledge Cryala gave them were quickly found and dominated by the Hive Mother. There were still many, though, who lived the lives of beholders, typically gaunts. The Disciples of Luumu discovered many in secret meetings in the night, but they rarely turned them in...

It seemed that, being of the 'Lesser Races' themselves, they often felt a pang of sympathy for their fellow fleshy ones. When those who were oppressed were given the chance to become the oppressors, as long as they didn't make to many waves or try and rise too high, they were most commonly left alone. Their offspring were of strong (if not a bit sensitive and emotional) beholder stock, so what was the worry?

The beholders who had taken their hunger too far dwindled in number, and the more common (and more socially acceptable, given the amount of gaunts that weren't of beholder minds) method of feeding on slaves became to simply drain little bits of life force at a time (as opposed to wholesale soul-devouring). This new process was a bit slower for the beholders, but it left the slaves livelier afterward and far less cooked or undead than in the past.

Almost the instant the message is sent, words are uttered from behind Cryala "Very Well, let it be so" Lerios had not so much traveled, as he had changed bodies. Truly, since his form was shadow itself, all he had done was brand his own divine presence in the shadows behind Cryala.

Lerios emerged from the shadows just before half of them turned into three headed jackal-birds. "Lerios, it has been so long..." Cryala laughed, greeting the Moon with her trademark politeness. "You have not seen the Wonders Yet Unknown, this is my home now. Be careful where you are, as it frequently isn't by the end."

She rummaged around in what appeared to be a large mushroom, opening one of the yellow spots as if it were a door. "This is for you." She hands him a small stone which sang. "It has no shine, but always sings loudest when surrounded by light."

Lerios shifts as the shadows do, the only constant is two red dots which stare forth from the darkness. "Thank you, but you have no need to worry. I am shadow, and so long as shadow resides here, so shall I." The darkness seemed to stretch forth, and then opened, revealing something. It was a skull the size of the palm of one's hand. "I had nothing prepared, but take this. It is the skull of one the animal denizens of my jungles. Some of my more primitive followers believe the skulls of such creatures hold magical properties, and in this one they would be correct. Like all my creatures, it is nocturnal, when the sun begins to rise it whistles as if in the wind, warning others of the suns coming. I'm afraid your stone shall do little singing, at least so long as it remains with me"

As the shadows flowed, so did he, but he commanded them to shift and swirl closer to Cryala. "So, what is new for you Lady Wanderer?"

"Very little is not new with me. It is how I am." Cryala sat on the mushroom, which now had a pair of devil horns that acted as jumping fountains. "Just the other day, I saw a large horn that was carried by a mortal who drew breath by blowing into the horn. It was clearly impossible, yet it happened, and I was happy. What of you? What interesting things have you done lately since we last saw each other in the house of the Grinning Lord?"

The shadow thought a moment. "I saw a mortal man who tricked a devil into selling itself in exchange for a favor from the mortal, quite the oddity. I must say I was duly impressed." He paused a moment more "I altered myself in more ways than one. There is a second moon now, have you seen it? The Moon of Kinds I call it. It has one eye for every race in existence. If someone were to create a new race, a new species of animal, one their kinds eyes would appear on the moon. I gifted my son with the realm I made, and he now seeks to appoint Regents to help him rule it. Curious."

"I did notice the Moon of Kinds, but I have had so many places to travel and I did not wish to offend them by not experiencing them as they were meant to. Places can get very angry, you know." Cryala giggled. "But rulership is foreign to me. I am sure your son will rule it in a way that suits him. It is the nature of children to be different from their parents. Look at my son, for instance."

The Shadows seemed to shrug. "True. I suppose, though, it makes it a tad harder, when you are an extension of someone's divine will, as well as their son. Have you seen his Kingdom, the Nine Heavens? I believe Lord Fox was to take you on a tour, but something came up, with that forest god, as things between such parties usually do. Strange how gods can seem all to mortal in their emotions, no?"

"Who's to say that mortals are not merely copying our godly emotions, merely with lesser fire?"

The shadows seemed to chuckle softly. It was somewhat... wrong. "Whose to say indeed?"

"Splendid creatures, they are. Full of interesting actions and conflicting ideologies. We might even be considered cursed because of the way we are bound to our natures."

"Perhaps. Then again, perhaps not. But mortals are but flickers in a dream, but flickers are among the most...scintillating things."

Cryala reached her hand and waved it in a circle, producing a gigantic red strawberry. She looks notably intrigued for a second. "Last time it was a wind chime within a clay bowl." Out of the berry sprang forth an animated arm, with the texture like Cryala's. It traced Cryala's chin affectionately, then began feeding her pieces of the enormous fruit.

"Help yourself." Cryala offers. "Last I checked, the lake behind you had wine in it."

"Thank you for the consideration, but I have no mouth. Besides, I'm for more... lively fare." So saying the tendrils of shadow reached out, and grasped the birds created from itself earlier, pulling them in before they can change further, creating shadows from their forms yet again.

everyone have an economy. some are just less obvious. for example, in a hunter's society some hunt the food, while others do the things nesecary at the camp. Those doing the camp work are "paid" in food. So how do the citizens get that which they need?

Opalum, the void

Opalum squated, staring down at the material plane. It was time to heal the world. For free? Never... He took a vampire from the world. A weak one, one that would have slowed his fellows down. He squeezed it into a gelatinous pulp. Shaping this crudely, he created a servitor of his will, a symbiote that would grant it's host the power of healing in exchange for health from the host. Of course the host's soul would go to Opalum, but since when did mortals take good care of their souls?

Next, he found himself surrounded by the souls he had bargained for. He needed a place to store them. Thus, building up his energy, he then let it burst, creating a plane of spas and pools and gardens, where the greatest of followers could relax and plot, and where the souls of those short sighted enough to accept Opalum's bargains could wander, slaves to the whims of the few free denizens. It would store the souls for now, until he could make use of them later.

As he patted the sleek neck, the great beast shrank, till it was around half again as large as a normal wolf. Its lithe form took off into the forest, and shortly after, its voice could be heard, raised in howling song.

Herrak's Return

The Hyena God licked his lips of the blood of the wolf god. He had feasted on the essence of Liardo for centuries it seemed, and now it was time to act. His essence was now his own, and he gained size and form (12 ap, 3-12=9 Evolve form). He looked like a dire Hyena now, larger body with spikes running the length of his back. He was powerful now, and he decided to gain the powers of diseases and pests, taking on the pestilence domain. But first, he had to gain the power to take on domains. (3-9=6 gain domain slot). He had thought about it for ages, and now it was his time to act. He created a plane in which gluttony and decadence would thrive, a place where his kind would suffer for his pleasure, naming it Geh-hyna, the torturous throne of Herrak (4-6=2 create plane). It was a place where inbearable heat and torturous plagues. Where every building was a torture house and in the center of this ordered torture sat the Throne of Gluttony, where he would sit and dictate his followers actions. And who were these followers? He took a few of his hyenas and made them stand upright. He clothed them and bathed them in blood. They were called Gnolls, and would live in wastelands, taming thier feral cousins to fight along side them (2-2=0). With those works done, he sat down on the Throne of Gluttony, Snickerfange at his side.

Sitting on his throne, Opalum gazed down once more at his greatest creations, the vampires. They were growing older. More powerful...

Vampires, the material plane

At first the Vein was loosely organised. But as vampires grew older, the eldest of the vampires began to take control of the organization, making the Vein more formal, more powerful, more dangerous... Almost in responce to the great power they gained control of, some of the older vampires grew more powerful, becoming known as the Elder Vampires, and the group of these elders which controlled the Vein became known as the Heart.

Meanwhile, vampires jealous of the power the Heart had gained found their own way of gaining power. They started selling their services. In death. They would be paid to kill: other vampires, foolish mortals, it didn't matter who. They did it for the power and the glory of the Vein. These trained other vampires, and even worthy mortals, in the art of murder. These vampires created small guilds, still part of the Vein, but at the same time seperate. These guilds became known as the Hands.
