Re: General Exalted Discussion IV: Roll Join Debate
Quick question: does anyone know of a video that shows someone wielding a seven-section staff? Closest I can find is a seven section chain whip that looks like it's wielded kinda like a rope dart.
EDIT: Unless that's what the writers had in mind when they included the seven-section staff into the game, it's just that the one Shepherd of the North Star is wielding in his picture in Scroll of Exalts looks a mite bigger.Last edited by ShadowFighter15; 2011-05-16 at 12:24 AM.

Re: General Exalted Discussion IV: Roll Join Debate
I think that will be hard because I think the seven section staff only exists in the minds of Exalted writers. I think they took the Chinese three-section staff and thought "that is cool, but it would be even better with an extra 4 sections, because Exalted are that awesome!"

Re: General Exalted Discussion IV: Roll Join Debate
Given the specific number, I figure the exact conversation was:
1:"Three section staffs are cool. We should have them in Exalted."
2:"Yeah, but they need to be turned up to 11 for Exalted. What can we do to it?"
1:"Hows about double the sections. **** yeah!"
2:"...no. Double plus one."
1:"=O"

Re: General Exalted Discussion IV: Roll Join Debate
Yeah, I thought that'd be the case.
Ah well - not my problem. Even if I make a martial arts character I don't think I'd ever bother with the seven-section staff. Tried using nunchaku in real-life once while I was studying Hapkido. Word of advice - if you're trying to learn how to use them, buy the ones with padding first.Avatar of Gnar'tigor - former Star Player of the Hellborn Hooligans Blood Bowl team - by Savannah

Re: General Exalted Discussion IV: Roll Join Debate
Generally a good idea with almost any melee-type weapon, actually, but jointed weapons especially. Nunchaku are actually illegal in Canada (as well as other countries, but Canada is where I live) due to the sheer force that can be generated with that sort of jointed weapon. I'd call you lucky if you got away without serious injury.
EDIT: And before anyone says anything, yes, I'm aware the seven-section staff is technically a martial arts weapon in Exalted terms. I meant 'melee' in more general terms.Last edited by DragonSinged; 2011-05-16 at 05:46 AM.

Re: General Exalted Discussion IV: Roll Join Debate
Most of the practice I did was in the actual lessons with the padded ones, but I did swing the other ones around. I was just careful to keep them away from my head. The family jewels may not have liked that decision, but they're still in working order.
On another matter - how would you represent Sidereal Charms in an animation? 2D or 3D, if you were making an animation of a Sidereal fighting someone what would you do to make the more unusual Sidereal Charms look as otherworldly as they would seem to the characters?
For instance, in Keychain of Creation, Jukashi represented the charms of Nemen-Yi, a Chosen of Battles, as her being able to move between panels of the comic, leaping down a row to avoid an attack and catch her opponent by surprise. In one instance, she... actually I'll just quote the entry on the comic's TV Tropes page to save time:

There is also the time reversal type tropes where you see something happen, a pause and then the scene rewinds so they can try things again.

In fact, I think Lookshy uses a lot of mortal magitechnicians to maintain all of their repair/maintenance rated artifacts, so that the few Terrestrial crafters they have can be doing more important stuff.

Mortals can make Artifacts too?!?
Wow, I guess I thought that essence was a big part of the equation, but I guess I was wrong.

Re: General Exalted Discussion IV: Roll Join Debate
This has been gone over many times before in these series of threads, but once a Mortal (whatever the mortal may be, human, fish, whatever) gets that second spark of Essence, no matter the method that they get it, they are no longer Mortal.
They might not live forever, and they can certainly be killed, but they're no longer Mortal in the setting. Calling them as such just confuses matters when talking about it.

Re: General Exalted Discussion IV: Roll Join Debate
Artifacts of rating 3 and below require only 3 dots in occult, lore, and craft. Of course, they also require 10, 30, and 60 successes respectively. So, mortals could easily make a 1 dot artifact, a two dot would be a difficult prospect, and a 3 dot would be the lifelong project of someone.

Technically, no, he's not. Part of the definition of mortal is that they can't manipulate essence. If they can, they are no longer fully a mortal.
