However, I think we can all agree that there are very few really BAD ponies. And we love them all.

See, the real problem is that my opinion of best pony changes alarmingly quickly.

What if they govern the various forces of nature and such like the Greek gods? Or maybe they're immortal ponies of the three races. I don't imagine the pony deity of say, trade to need much in the way of magical powers. S/He'd probably be an earth pony or unicorn.

On the other hand, an Alicorn using vast magical powers for mundane stuff is kind of funny.

I wonder what a ponygod of trade would do all day. Traditonal gods of sun and moon did move the moon to keep the world working just as Celestia and Luna do. But in equestria the ponies themselves keep the world running, so the idea of an god who just represents a certain force seems odd. Would such a pony good send out letters to big corporations to remind them to make more sales, call up shop owners who want to sleep in and tells ponies what the exact demand curve of their product is? The latter would be very useful.

Unfortunately, just as Blueblood embodies pride, the other current "paragon" is a bit of a disappointment. The gluttonous pegasus paragon is too fat to fly. On the bright side, the position of earth pony paragon has recently opened up, and they're considering Applejack for the position. Unfortunately, she lacks the courtly contacts to overcome the graft that has sprung up in the time where Princess Celestia has been forced to focus almost exclusively on maintaining the skies, and is highly unlikely to be granted the position.

re pony paragons: Heck, after my sequel to It's Always Sunny in Fillydelphia (working title: Semper Fidelis), Soarin might be considered as a replacement pegasus paragon, perhaps prematurely pending a program of proper performance review of the existing pegasus pagagon, peck of pickled peppers.
