Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw! Together!
Thank you ^^
She's cute! Only two points I'd like to make: First, it looks like each of her legs are bending in a different direction. Second, what's that extra line under her nose?
Last couple of days haven't been very productive, but I'll post what I've got.
Day 51, AJ uses her lasso, while jumping. A practice sketch for part of the big animation.
Spoiler
This is a weird one, because I don't actually know if I like it or not. I just don't. It's an odd feeling. Clearly something is off.
Day 52, boring leg practice:
Spoiler
Day 53 (today), more leg practice, this time drawing over a tutorial pic I had, 'cos it's just easier that way.

Day 54. Inspired by the filly Twilight bookfort pic that was in the main thread, I drew this up:
Spoiler
I think the proportions are slightly off for a filly (she's a little elongated) but other than that, I like this.
Thinking I might colour it tomorrow.

I think the outlines should be thicker and the shoulders more defined, that is, more prominent.

Proportions in the legs are a little off too. They should probably be a little shorter.

Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw! Together!
The lines could stand to be thicker, yeah. Not sure about the shoulders though. How would I make them stand out on a pony? They're rarely drawn.
Yeah, I think you're right.
Mmm, see what you mean. Perhaps because the ears are still straight?
Thanks for the advice everyone.

Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw! Together!
Spoiler
Just my thoughts on the screencaps. The bulge in Pinkie might be shoulders, but they'd be a little large based on how low the legs seem to end. That and it would put the legs in front of the shoulders, but I'm pretty sure they'd need to be back behind the chest if that was the case. Not too sure with pony anatomy. I don't think it would put the neck in front of the shoulders without a better defined chest though. For Pinkie I think the larger bulge leading to her back leg is more just her flank moved slightly to the side to show her at a bit of an angle. As you said, ponies are pear-shaped, so the artists would need to show the pony getting fatter as you move back or it would look really weird.
As for the second picture, there are a few ponies with visible legs in it and they don't seem to have defined shoulders any more than the others. The legs just seem to come out of the skinnier part. Of course they also don't have defined flanks, so it could be that the artists just chose to draw them without either from the top to keep the style simple.

You could be right. This image of Twilight does not show any shoulder bulge but it does show the neck tapers faster than the body.

That angle is so hard to draw. I have no idea if I got those back legs right, I could not find a decent reference.
Also I forgot to erase the lines around the eyes. But I did remember the cutie marks at the very last minute.

Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw! Together!
The back legs look like they're upside down, maybe move the leg itself up more and straighten the curve of the flank at the top and instead curve the bottom part of it. I'd swear there was a scene in the show that had that angle, but I can't for the life of me figure out what it was. Going to have to do some digging and see if I can find it.

Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw! Together!
Well, I got settled in after moving and begun to draw again. I felt the urge to draw ponies.
Congrats on keeping up with the daily drawing!
I'm slightly jealous, I need to start doing something like that.
On the picture,
That is a hard angle. I agree with Kyouhen's comment on the legs and flank. I feel that from that angle the flank end would look flatish with a single curve.
Here's a lazy crude doodle.

Off model slightly humanized Vampire Rarity and Sweetie Belle! This came from a comment on my devianart page about how Sweetie Belle was going vamp on Big Mac on one of my old pictures. I found I couldn't stop thinking about vampire ponies, so this happened.
Crooked towers, lazy moon, and Rarity's cloak is a magical dramatic cloak. It's actually size and weight changes so it always at it's most dramatic. Yeah, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Rarity and Sweetie Belle's hair is off model, honestly I stopped trying to perfectly replicate the hair and started to wing it to varying results.
There is no perspective on this picture. After practicing it so long, it's somewhat liberating, even if it makes me feel guilty.
I'm still working on coloring that other picture, I just took a break from it and wanted to do something else.

Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw! Together!
These look good! The second one is spot on, that's a wonderful even coloring technique you got going on there. Are they markers? I personally am very bad at all traditional forms of coloring, so kudos on that.
I must parrot Diego Havoc on proportions though, the bottom one needs it the most, and it seems that it is the pose which doesn't have a clear reference. And I don't see any pencil lines to signify that you did any pre-drawing like the second to last with a clear circle for head and pear-ish shape for the body, though you may have erased them. The thing which helps the most with proportions is to sketch out the circles for the head and body first before moving on to the details.
Pony hair is hard and full of curvy lines, but you actually seem to be doing ok curve wise. If you work out the proportions it should be great.
I think you're right on the heel part. Can you post the picture? For a reference? Weird pony poses are always needed.
Thanks!
I'm not the biggest fan, but I do have a small soft spot for vampires, not so much serious business cool modern vampires, but old fashion overly dramatic count style vampires. They just seem to fit Rarity and Sweetie Belle.
The new one looks great! I can't really think of anything to nitpick on it.
Thanks for the kind words, I'll try to get on it. I need to actually finish a picture! It has been a couple of months now...
Well here goes nothing!
Day 1,
SpoilerLuna eating ice cream and two medieval time characters in medieval time hoods! Took about two hours. I need to draw faster and stop getting distracted. I have never drawn Luna before, so I decided to take a whack at it. Not much to say.
I need to work on my canine expressions, I used to be better at this type of thing.
Luna's hair started to remind me of split milk. And I decided to draw her hoofs on the ice cream cone. True, she would use magic, but it's more amusing this way. At least I think so. The hoofs aren't connected to her body right even if the shoulders and body are invisible. Practice, practice and more practice.

Ooo, very nice for a Day 1. Could I get a general assessment of your abilities and art background? Also, do you have a tablet or any access to digital tools? Any experience in other art mediums than sketching? Inking?
Your linework is generally pretty solid and everything looks pretty well proportioned

Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw! Together!
They are Stabilo pens from Germany, or at least, that's where I get them from. I don't do much drawing outside of Pencil/Tablet, but these marker/pen things are amazing and they also last pretty long.
I did pre-drawing for all of them, but I've always had troubles with proportions, which is why I pretty much gave up on learning anime and cartoon drawing. I've only started drawing again because others have asked me to draw things for them. The two better ones are just copies, but they really helped me get a flow. The First and last one are both free hand and I didn't use the reference. I feel squicky about just copying things so I have to make new concepts to make myself happy.
OMG I'm so jelly. :<
And I think the spilt milk flowing into her hair is cool. XD

Sure. I took these pics from Sonic Rainboom. Both are from behind, rather than in front like my pic, but I felt they gave a good sense of how the back legs go when a pegasus flies.

I'm still looking for a pose similar to the one I did, but no luck so far.

Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw! Together!
Thank you!
Here's an art bio blurb,
SpoilerOn art background,
I have been drawing since forever, ever since I was a wee babe. But it was during my teenager years that I started to try to take it seriously and I starting to draw in "anime style" (It would be a disgrace to even call that generic drivel manga style...). During my college years, I begin to move away and try to develop my own style. During my last year of college, I started to realized my "style" was just a crutch and started to try to draw a wider variety of things. And here I am. Three or so years later. Drawing ponies.
On the technical skills,
I grew up only drawing with number 2 pencils and copier paper. I have no traditional art education. Until recently with the pony stuff, I had no experience coloring things and no experience inking things. For the past five years or so I've been using a wacom tablet, my skills with pencils has suffered. Not that it was ever great, due to the lack of traditional art education I only recently realized that I was holding the pencil wrong the whole time! What a twist!
I lean toward conceptual/character designs and draft pencil work, it's like I spent my whole life practicing to be a traditional comic book penciler, focusing on rough drafts of scenes rather then creating a finished clean product.
On interests,
My art interests are general medieval and ancient history, fantasy, people, animals, animal people, monsters, fan art, and ponies.
On other art-ish stuff,
The other art things I do is make mediocre historically accurate-ish low-poly models for civilization 4 mods. And I world build and plot out story concepts. And that's it.
In short, mediocre amateur penciler/sketcher, character concept/design, guy with no inking or coloring skills, wacom user, and who loves ponies.
Sorry for disappearing for a couple of weeks! Now I feel bad...
I'll have to look into getting some of those markers...
On proportions I don't think you need to worry. I don't know how long you've been trying to get cartoony stuff down, but as far as I know, everyone has trouble with proportions, I honestly never met anyone who said that proportions just came naturally. I've been drawing for years, but it's only been in the last 2-3 years that my general proportions became passable and I'm still trying to get it right. I've produced a lot of drivel over the years, and am still making it on off days...
You could try to just focus on the basic circles of the pony body, I use a circle for the head and two slightly smaller connected circles for the body. it's boring practice but it helps.
Thank you!
Thanks, these will really help!
There is much truth in this.
Oddly enough, recently when I was in a highschool art class a student asked me if I do any art and if I was any good, I tried to explain that I do art things but as far as skill level is concerned I had reached a mediocre amateur block which I can't seem to get past... He looked at me like I was insane. This poster puts it in much better words.
Day 2,
More pony,
SpoilerA lazy doodle, I'll draw a complete pony tomorrow. Or a complete person. I seem to be in a head only mood.
Had a somewhat bad/good day at work today. A day of highs and deep lows. Then I started to wonder if Cheerilee had days like this. I wonder if after having to listen to some of the more ignorant comments from say, Snips and Snails, she starts to wonder if she should have done something else with her life. Her mind probably starts to drift back to all of the opportunities and choices she had. Perhaps she should have accepted that invitation to join a New Wave rock band or something, made it big.
And that's a apple with a bite mark in it and a overlarge leaf.
I wanted her face to be pressed up against the desk, but now her cheeks are too fat. Maybe she's still chewing that apple bite... Oh well, there's always tomorrow.

Re: Ponythread Learns to Draw! Together!
Thank you! I was worried that I over exaggerated on the cheeks.
I actually really, really, like this one.
The design isn't show accurate, but it is very unique with the larger hairdo and more "manga-ish?" style eyes. It's very cartoony but in a different style besides the show and still looks and feels like Pinkie. The mouth part does look a bit like Birdo, but it doesn't look that bad. The curves and circles in her hair are wonderful. I don't know if you are trying to develop your own style of drawing ponies, but it works and is very nice!
My only nit-pick would be that the nose doesn't seem to sit between the eyes, but this may be a part of a more abstract style you are leaning toward. Perhaps you can lengthen the line to go between the eyes, or attach the nose line to the farthest eye like they do in the show.
You should do one with a body!
Day 3,
SpoilerKeeping up with this is hard, I don't know if I'll make it till the end of the week. Maybe I'll try to do a 3-5 sketch a week challenge...
Anyway, here is a one hour doodle of a Twilight Rapidash. It's pretty bad. She's supposed to be breathing flames, yet she could also be sucking them up with a straw. The flames are lazy, I need to learn a good way to draw a abstract flames quickly. Yeah, there are a million things wrong with this one. But I wanted to only take roughly a hour long to force myself to draw and make better judgements on the fly.
