Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Their profile says they're dream pop, which I think is more apropos. Shoegaze has the vocals way lower in the mix and is focused a lot more on textures.
That said, around this sound, genre labels are...difficult. At best.i am going to make it through this year
if it kills me
i am going to make it though this year

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
That doesn't look like Quarantine to me, Faulty.
Man, I am not a fan of this type of super clean, pretty nugaze. Shame it seems to be the only type people are making these days. A Place To Bury Strangers, come back, we need you.
I know APTBS released an album this year, but it was not very good. APTBS circa debut album, come back, we need you.Last edited by Moff Chumley; 2013-01-11 at 03:01 PM.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Have you been watching the Lizzie Bennet Diaries?
Anyway, I find those two reasons insufficient to pronounce it AOTY. Taylor being adorable seems questionable as a reason for an album (AKA an entirely sonic experience) to be brought into consideration for this prestigious award.
While I understand that some with less sufistkated tastes might consider the album something resembling memorable or "catchy" (to use lay-man terms), there are many albums released this year that fulfill this requirement to a similar degree and offer far more than mere scientifically designed sonically pleasurable chord progressions and insipid repeating choruses with silly lyrics about how everything is everyone else's fault than what Taylor and her band of producers are capable of concocting. Also known as Jarbis

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Grimes is great! I think people are a tad over enthusiastic about her, though. We went to college together, bit of trivia there! :D
I haven't listened to the Frank Ocean yet but damn it's #1 on so many year end lists. It had a two page New Yorker article dedicated to it!
I don't have an actual AOTY. I'll be following 2013 more closely though. At the moment I'm partial to Will Thomas Long's Luxury Centre and Mountains' Centralia.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Taylor Swift is awful. I don't listen to her music, so just as a person.
Frank Ocean and Kendrick Lamar albums were both good, but I maintain album of the year is either Kill For Love or Nocturne.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Eh, it's cool, Swans isn't for everyone. Not saying that you have unsophisticated tastes or whatever, but Gira is known for being abrasive, even in his softer stuff.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
I listen to harsh noise and power electronics. Abrassive isn't a problem for me. It's like Grouper or Wolves in the Throne Room for me. I enjoy it as I listen, but afterwards forget what it sounded like and don't have a huge desire to listen to it again.
Every now and then I try again, though, because, like, Swans.Wonder Woman (DC Girls in Sweaters Style) Avatar by Astrella.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
As you know, I am a huge Swans fanboy. But even if you like other harsh music, noise, industrial, no-wave, etc, Swans are still a "not everyone's cup of tea" sort of band.
Psychic TV is of course an acceptable substitute
Shadow of the Sun, have you caught Swans and/or Angels of Light live? A must if you haven't, and they're touring a lot these days! Makes for a happy me!Last edited by JoshL; 2013-01-11 at 10:12 PM.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
You might. My girlfriend likes them better. It's a lot more lyric driven than Swans. The first two records are particularly awesome (I didn't care for We Are Him though)

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
"I.C. Water" is so damn good. Do you have a favorite PTV release? The only stuff I'm crazy about thus far is the acid house stuff, but "Godstar" is one catchy song.
As far as stuff I fan girl over, I find Prurient, Whitehouse, Muslimgauze, Tegan and Sara, and Coil (Coilcoilcoilcoil) to be nummy. Probably more but that's off the top of my head.
EDIT: God damn Darkthrone are one of my favorites of the evertims.
EDIT EDIT: Deathspell Omega, Foetus, Natural Snow Buildings. So many noob moves forgetting stuff up in here.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Probably A Pagan Day, but mostly sentimental reasons there. I like them so much because they're so all over the place (eclectic tastes leaning towards eclectic bands). Godstar is indeed catchy (though I like Roman P as a rock song better).
I fanboy out a lot. I just get excited about music. Swans, LPD, tindersticks, Tom Waits, The Church, Oingo Boingo, Aube, Current 93...and the more diverse the catalog the better!
Yeah, way, way too many to name. Foetus are awesome. And I love Erasure way too much too. To quote Zappa, "music is the best"
Haven't grabbed that C93 yet (and limited, so I'll probably have to wait until a reissue), but even the releases I'm not as crazy about have songs I love!Last edited by JoshL; 2013-01-11 at 10:31 PM.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
You da best. Shawty, you da, you da best.
The second "Origin of the Species" comp is currently blowing my mind but I love Thee Infinite Beat and Allegory and Self has grown on me. Also heard Hand of Chance and Pagan Day but they haven't stuck as much for me.
Music is like the most exciting thing ever for me. @_@ Have you checked out C93's Haunted Waves, Moving Graves? Love it.Wonder Woman (DC Girls in Sweaters Style) Avatar by Astrella.
