You apply the salve, but without more healing training it is hard to tell if it is effective. To make matters worse, you awaken in the night to howling.

Douglas does not stir to the howling. In his half-dead state, he is not phased by howls...

Adoward wakes in dread to the howling and quietly walks to see what made the sound.

The beast from before has returned. There are 2 of them this time, one of them seems familiar. It is likely the one that escaped before.

Knowing the situation is dire Adoward calms himself and throws an apple to distract the beasts momentarily as he attempts to move quietly to one of the nearby trees and climb up it.

The thrown apple distracts them for a second before they return their gaze to you. As you scramble up the tree one dog rushes in and growls. The other heads of in the direction of the ant's body.

Adoward steadies himself on a branch and picks a nearby apple. He then loads his sling with it and slings it at the growling beast.

The beast easily dodges your apple. It is the wrong size for the sling, not to mention the branches between you and the ground make aiming difficult. In the distance the other beast clearly finds the carcass and begins to drag it away.

Adoward tries to sling yet another apple, hoping to scare away the beast.

Your attack hits the beast squarely on the head. It staggers and then shakes its head. It moves around the tree behind you, continuing to keep watch.

Adoward loads another apple and readies himself to fire at any beast that tries to near Douglas.

One of the dogs continues to drag the ant off, directly through your makeshift camp. The other is content with snarling and keeping you in the tree.

Adoward continues to wait for a beast to be reasonably able to be hit and/or be near Douglas.

Sorry for being slow to post, been unexpectedly busy, should be back to normal now though.

You are stuck in the tree for quite some time. Eventually you lose sight of the 2nd dog. A few minutes later you here a bark and the dog treeing you retreats.

It's okay. I'm now busy myself trying to get a new job. Posting will be spotty the next few weeks.

Adoward carefully climbs down the tree, all the while listening for the beasts (or anything for that matter.)

Assuming there is nothing to impede him Adoward moves silently over to Douglas and keeps watch for the rest of the night, or until he wakes up.

Taking 10 on both climb and listen, 13 and 10 respectively. Also taking 10 so 13 on the move silently.

You are able to sit watch the rest of the night uneventfully. You realize that the lack of sleep may eventually hurt you, but you aren't yet feeling any major adverse effects. Douglas still doesn't awaken come the morning, though he does seem to be doing better.
