Re: Quotes you can build a character off of III: It's a crowd
Spoiler: "You were wearing a fat suit?" "A bullet proof fat suit."I cannot help but think of one of those spy-comedies. Competent but in ways that may no logical sense.Spoiler: "Hello. I'm Diane. You don't mind keeping me safe, do you?"-El Goonish Shive
When you are in over your head, ask for help. Being able to do that readily is a strength in itself.
Mechanically you might have some diplomatic skill or contacts.Spoiler: "I am aware this makes me an incredibly evil person. I would apologize for this, but being evil, I feel I shouldn't."-El Goonish Shive: Commentary
One of those cartoon villains, that plays the roll but isn't really evil. If you actually want to play a comedy, and not just a comedic game, maybe this would work as your villain.Spoiler: "I can hear your heart beating."So I'm going to assume that this was said at a time where one would not normally be able to hear another's heart. Could be a doctor with a stethoscope, but there are more appropriate quotes for that.
The obvious or more straight forward explanation for this they have really good senses, at least hearing. By itself it is a simple statement, but I can't help but wonder why they would say it. For the straightforward case, I think it is a reminder of just how good, or perhaps just how dangerous they really are. Some sort of spy or assassin who can react to the smallest details. Of course the fact that they have to remind people of that says they don't usually come across that way.
The other one I can think of is that they have some sort of mystic connection to the world around them, allowing them to sense (or hear) someone else's heart beat. In this sense it is a reminder of the spiritual side that others might miss or not be connected to.
This is actually one that has been bouncing around in my head for quite a while. Not sure why it took me so long to get to it.

"Dibs on his boots." --Anonymous (traditional)
Character: a cleric or other adherent of the ancient religion of the Pi'Ci people (worshippers of the over-god Di'Em) who is well-versed in the funerary rites and customs that date back to before their diaspora from the lost land of Blackmoor into the realms of the Flanaess and from there to the planes of the multiverse.

"Of course, every soldier is prepared to die. But these people aren’t just pawns on a chessboard. They all have names, families and feelings in their hearts too. They are all humans who live and bleed. You have the responsibility to ensure their death will not be in vain. No matter what may come, remember this in your naive heart, and be ready to die to fulfill that duty."

Re: Quotes you can build a character off of III: It's a crowd
Spoiler: "Justin? ... You're going to make me look up from [my game] aren't you."-El Goonish Shive
Either someone very focused or very apathetic. Well, someone very focused on something in particular and apathetic to other things. It could be something in particular, but since it is the base of the character maybe they away have a particular focus they hate being dragged away from until they have completed it.Spoiler: "Who's that pink-haired girl?" "That's Tedd. You know, Grace's boyfriend?" "What."-El Goonish ShiveBecause girls can be boys and boys can be girls. A very feminine (in appearance) male which you can easily flip around if you like.Spoiler: "I could probably just ask someone about it, but then I wouldn't get to speculate."-El Goonish Shive: Commentary
The journey, not the destination as applied to mental exercises. Some sort of armchair philosopher. Or perhaps someone in training to be one? It isn't usually something you train in, but there are those unanswerable riddles monks use.
So we have a philosopher monk in-training... who is not particularly concerned with straight forward solutions.Spoiler: "Well you know what they say: 'Keep your friends close and your enemies closer' and you are closest to your family."Well first, let this be remembered by those GMs who think the families of PCs are only good for killing off. For some reason this one made me think that is both a friends and enemies with their family, but I'm not entirely sure what that means, tough love/constraint ribbing?Spoiler: "That which doesn’t kill me had best be able to run away really fast."~Anonymous
One full of vengeance. It sort of makes me think of the gang mentality, "my defense is that everyone knows I will hurt you back". So I guess a gangster, although a wonderer who has a reputation might fit your classical game a bit better.
And one for other people to play with:

"Truth hurts. That's the best use of it."
Thought of that myself (no, i don't believe in that); i think it's a great phrase for a villain (or maybe an antihero). Any ideas?

Base decisions in character when playing DND.
However, if that basis happens to align with some meta-game information, well I guess you were really lucky.

Re: Quotes you can build a character off of III: It's a crowd
The second at least is from the Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix. In context its about some of the more powerful magics/bloodlines in that world and their tendency to commandeer the lives of their bearers. Would be cool for almost any character dragged into legend against their choice.

Re: Quotes you can build a character off of III: It's a crowd
Spoiler: the duct tape characterI created a sorcerer, first used as a DMPC, and then a regular PC. had summon duct tape spell as a first level spell (creates 1d4 rolls +1d4 per 3 levels). max ranks in crafting stuff with it. made clothes, boats, bridges, traps and a great many other things using it. used mythbusters for inspiration on stuff to make at times. at higher levels he would cast his armor spell at the start of the day, then burn all the other first level spells summoning duct tape.

Spoiler: "No he doesn't [know everything], but there is no way he hasn't done background checks on every friend [his son] has ever had."-El Goonish Shive
Paranoid, protective and very thorough. Makes me think of a retired secret agent, settled down enough to have kids. Although one who likes to plan a bit more than your average action movie spy.Spoiler: "She makes her own almond milk."A very hippy individual. (Seriously? Isn't regular almond milk bio-natural-friendly-whatever-your-going for enough? Has to be home made?)Spoiler: "OK, bored, let's go save the world now."I feel there more than a few players that this would describe, so why not create a character to go with it? An adrenaline junky, uninterested in the details and just wants to get to the action. From the 'save the world' phrase they may or may not caught up in some idealistic fantasy of the heroics as well.Spoiler: "I guess in the end, people are complicated." "Hey Slime!" "Case in point, hey guys!"I'm not entirely sure what you want to do with a philosophic fellow nicknamed Slime, but amuses me.Spoiler: "This is your fault isn't it?" "I am offended. Yeah, it totally is."A trouble maker who has a reputation. Or maybe they don't, maybe they usually have the social grace to take no responsibility for it. But someone knows them too well and they can fool them... the trouble maker can't fool the person who knows them but can fool everybody else. Similar to the classic bard.
The classic villain inquisitor is one. How about a rebel, who holds a secret they can bring down the powers that be with. A whistle blower or a trader of hidden knowledge.
Oh hi goto124, haven't seen you in a while.
