Re: Iron Crisis Pt3 IC
The inspector looks unconvinced, and unimpressed. "You don't know anything about Rieltar, do you? Months away, or so you said. Lies stacked upon lies always topple eventually." He snorts. "I have the backing of the Iron Throne - the true Iron Throne. You kill me and you'll be wiped off the face of Toril like scum off a blade, forgotten just as quickly. GUARDS! INTRUDERS!" His yell comes swiftly, and in response you hear more than one pair of boots rapidly approaching - far, far closer than you would have expected given how the floor looked before you entered the private room.
Spoiler: OOC
From the sounds outside you've got one round of actions to take in this cramped room before the guards show up for any prebuffing or unshapeshifting whatever else you may want to do with the time.

SR 2/2, Conditions: Protected from Good and Evil, Concentrating
Grok sighs in relief as the deception clearly failed, but it did at least get them through the door and up a floor. With evil before him, evil behind him, and a potential hint as to where those iron destroying scum came from in front of him, he wasn't going to take any chances.
Not missing a beat, the butt of his glaive licks out, beating the inspector about the head, trying to remove conscious thought from the foul creature before him, and replace it with dreams of getting beaten about the head. Beating administered, he heads towards the door of the private room, taking up station about ten feet from the door, ready to skewer whomever comes in first with the blade.
Despite his usual war cry shouting in combat, this time, he remains silent, hoping for just one more moment of confusion, even as he calls upon Moradin's protection as he faced the evil of this place.
Spoiler: OOC
Action: Two non-lethal attacks on Mr. Nortuary.

Move: Position himself to PaM/Sentinel the entrance to the room, hopefully buying a little more time by stalling the guards.
Bonus: Cast Protection from Good and Evil, which will hopefully be helpful in the coming fight against the foul creatures no doubt rushing towards them.
Reaction: PaM/Sentinel Attack? And use Relentless Avenger to move enough to block the door, to prevent them from coming in en-mass, so long as he can continue to stand.

The Investigation
Doing his best to remain calm and in character, Sam bids his companions dismissively, "Subdue him, and try not to make a mess of the office. I will clear matters with the guards." Though Senna's strange actions and spell give him pause and worry that her speaking might be overheard and give them away, Sam hurls a psychic stun at Nortuary as he steps out the door. Remaining tense, he prepares himself to talk down whatever guards might be rushing to their location.
Leaping from her place as he leaves, Grepha bites at the sensitive places on Nortuary's toes, hoping to subdue him.

Re: Iron Crisis Pt3 IC
Though the unarmoured inspector finds himself easy pray for Grok's glaive, he manages to stay standing, and his mental defences prove adequate to throw off the worst of Sam and Senna's spellslinging, even if only barely in the case of Senna's spells. No sooner does Sam leave the room, the doors on the far side swing open, revealing a number of guards - three you can clearly see - approaching, accompanied by the xvart from earlier. The deception may have played to the guards, but to this nameless xvart, he seems to have known the vampire better than to be fooled by your words, and gathered a force as quickly as he could.
It is this which prompts him to action, conjuring a spectral phoenix that (possibly) strikes fear into the heart of the party, and flings a ball of flame at Sam diffuses pointlessly against his thick scales. At your back, Nortuary incants a spell of his own, summoning spirits to flit around and protect him...and to attack those would do him harm.
Spoiler: Map
Two hits from Grok, Mind Thrust resisted, and Senna's enrage is barely resisted (10+3=13).
Nortuary uses his 'free' turn to heal himself for 4. He then goes first in Initiative, and casts Spirit Guardians on himself. Grepha takes (3d8)[12] radiant, half as much on a successful DC13 Wis save.
The xvart goes next and summons a spectral phoenix visage. Any hostile creature starting its turn within 30ft of it (which is all the party, save Grepha currently) needs to make a DC14 Wis save or be Frightened of the xvart for 1 minute. Repeating save, immune to it for 24 hours after success. No saves needed yet since the party's not up, I'm just jotting it down now.
They then use their bonus action to fling a flameball at Sam, but it misses.
Grepha is up.

Re: Iron Crisis Pt3 IC
Grepha's tail ignites with flame as she approaches Nortuary but the xvart's swift spellcast slithers through the air, meeting fire with fire. The impact melds the magic together and throws the imp off balance, forcing it back and saving the inspector from a nasty stinger. The guards begin to move in, whips and swords in hand. One slips by, aiming its whip at the Leaf-zombie and cracking one whip on the tabaxi's shoulder, before turning their combined attentions to Bokono. Keen-edged steel and hefty leather tear at the elemental, but stops just short of ending its existence.
Spoiler: Map
Grepha's GFB is Counterspelled by the Xvart, causing the attack to fail. On the plus side, he blew a counterspell on a cantrip, and can't use its reaction again for the rest of the round.
The three guards move in and attack Leaf (hit once, 5), and Bokono (crit once, 16 and hit twice for 8 and 7) with their whips. They also attempt to pull Leaf prone, but he makes the DC14 Ath/Acr check. Bokono would have failed but he's immune to the prone condition. Two of them also use their bonus actions to attack with their shortswords, dealing 3 and 6 to Bokono, leaving it on 5/45HP if my maths is correct.
Senna, Sam, and Leaf are up. Senna starting her turn within Spirit Guardians provokes a DC13 wis save to halve [roll0] Radiant. Sam, Senna, and Leaf also need to make the DC14 Wis save or be Frightened of the Xvart, and therefore unable to move forwards.

The ditzy zombified cleric draws her newest bell as her willpower deflects some of the protectors of Waukeen. She glances a the flaming phoenix and scoffs. Stand down or your soul will know endless torment in Gehenna. she says, not even sure if the souls of her victims are taken by Bhaal or their respective deities anymore. Regardless, her magic bell echoes with power, and Nortuary sees himself suddenly caught in a steely cage, with spikes pointing inwards, sunken into the depths of a firey pit, burning with dark flames.
She steps out of his divine radius. We cannot let ourselves get cornered in a room without escape!

Re: Iron Crisis Pt3 IC
With a peeling bell, Nortuary finds himself locked in a hellish prison entirely of his own making (and magic). Despite the horrors he is locked within, the inspector's mind proves strong enough to maintain his spell. Sam's foe is less resilient, falling victim and fleeing away back from whence he came. Leaf's arrow strikes true just as one of the soldiers closes, slashing at him with a shortsword. The dart follow up at Grok plinks pointlessly against his armour, and the entire battlefield almost stops to ask why he even bothered.
The other approaching soldier slashes twice at Bokono, but despite the elemental's weakened form, and the buoyed morale of his close ally, the swordsman isn't able to finish the job.
Spoiler: Map
Senna took 15 (then halved by save, to 7) radiant damage from SG, in case it wasn't updated. Nortuary fails save vs. Mental Prison, but succeeds on Concentration, so SG stays up. He's extremely close to falling over.
Save failed vs. Dissonant Whispers from Sam, but Grok had already spent his reaction, so the enemy can move away un-OA'd.
Leif hits, for 26 total.
The soldiers move in. One closes to Leaf, hitting once with a shortsword for 9, missing with their other attack, and also missing with their bonus action dart attack on Grok.
The other attacks Bokono, but despite 13 AC and pack tactics, his two shortsword attacks narrowly miss (by 1, on both attacks), leaving the elemental alive...for now!
Caelyn takes 15 radiant from Spirit Guardians at the start of her turn, DC13 wis for half.
Caelyn and Grok also need to make the DC14 Wis save or be Frightened of the Xvart, and therefore unable to move forwards.

Re: Iron Crisis Pt3 IC
Grok's glaive whips out at the nearest enemy, cutting deep despite the fear, and bloodying the over-eager soldier who ran into the fray. They're still standing, but it's quite clear they're outmatched immediately.
Caelyn slips out of sight of the xvart, letting the fear steadily inch away, but finds it replaced by a deep desire, a hot and cold hunger in the belly and just beneath the skin. She raises her staff, and the world goes black for what feels like only a moment. When her eyes open once more, Nortuary lies dead at her feet, his skull bashed into a bloody, brainslurried pulp. The young elf that had tried to take him alive finds quite the opposite. He is not merely dead, but beyond recovery for any magics you might have. And she did it. Blood talks louder than words, and right now it is not merely speaking, it is singing. A giggle, mad and gleeful, bubbles from Caelyn's lips, unbidden but comfortable, for only a moment before the feeling passes, and she is 'herself' again.
The xvart pushes forward, set on putting you down. It opens with a burst of arcane magic against Bokono, finally extinguishing his flame, before a second blast of flame sears Sam's scales.

The flames scarcely mark Sam's scales, if they could be seen. The outward illusion of the vampire simply looks untouched.
Within the room, Grepha bears witness to Caelyn's episode. A spider's expression is difficult to read, if it could in fact be seen, but she speaks. "Keep it together. One of them or not, he was dangerous in his own right," she tries to assuage Caelyn's no doubt deteriorating mental state. "Eyes on the prize." An infernal pep-talk is cold comfort, but she at least has the sense to try.
She feels the fear spell nagging at her as she advances into the next room and climbs to Grok's shoulder for a vantage, but discards it with a thought. Irritation still boils beneath the surface at the last fear spell to enfeeble her, and she reaches out with a trail of darkness to drag the xvart nearer to harm.

Re: Iron Crisis Pt3 IC
Grepha's spell narrowly slips off the xvart's mage armour, though it is very narrow.
The guards, absent a Bokono to target, move in closer, whips cracking out against Sam, Leaf and Grok, delivering blows that cut beyond armour, and in the case of the formermost and lattermost, wrapping their ankles and dragging them to the floor in the process. With Sam proned, his tripper follows up with a shortsword strike that slips between scales to draw blood.
Spoiler: Map
Grepha narrowly misses (14 vs. AC15).
The guards move back in and attack Sam (hit twice, 8 and 5), Grok (crit once, 12, miss with the other) and Leaf (hit twice, 8 and 6). Grok and Sam additionally fail their ath/acr check if I'm not mistaken (Sam: 9+Mods vs DC14, Grok: 4+Mods vs DC14) and are pulled prone by the whips. Leaf passes theirs (11+mods=safe) One of them follow up attacks Sam with their shortsword, for 10.
Senna, Sam, and Leaf are up. If you were Frightened before, and didn't remember to make your end-of-turn wis save, now might be a good time to make it from last time!

Re: Iron Crisis Pt3 IC
Point blank, the enemy might have normally been able to throw off Leaf's aim, but a steady hand delivers a bowshot through his helmet and skull, dropping him to the floor with a sickening splat. Senna moves to fill the gap, radiant light searing two of the whip-wielders, and gaining her the attention of the remaining soldier, who moves in to stab her - and does so with critical accuracy, at least at first. The pain moves her away from the second stab.

With the soldier in front of him brought down by Leaf's desparate melee shooting, Grok swiftly charges into the gap, putting his bulk in between the archer and the multitude of soldiers attacking, and lashing out with his glaive, the blade moving far more swiftly than anyone would have expected from looking at the dwarf.

When the blow landed and the blood and brain matter began to flow, and Caelyn felt herself lose control of her body as her lips curled into a smile, Caelyn started an inward scream that became an outward scream as soon as the twisted impulse to smile and giggle passed. Was this their fate? A future of forced bloodshed, of doing battle over and over again, unable to stop themselves from slaying each foe they came across? A future where hatred and murder were their only constant companions? Turning to Grok and reading the discomfort... and perhaps disgust on his features, Caelyn's scream ignited her.
Flames began to pour from her lips, eyes and ears, and a corona of heat and flame surrounded her like an aura. Remorse, pain, regret, and helplessness fueled her flames and made her voice rise to the heavens in a cry for relief from this terrible burden. And, despite the fact that there was no divine response, no pillar of golden light or divine messenger of some sort, her cry was smothered. Her flames receded to embers. The bloodlust was replaced by calm, cool assurance. Turning to face her family, her new friends, and her foes, her face is still as water, impartial as the night sky, and as sure as the constant stars that have guided mortals since this world was formed.
She could no control the now. She could not fight this bloodlust or resist it's call- her own force of personality did not measure up to that of a god. But... she remembered Melian lecturing her about the elvish gods. She remembered her speaking of the Lady of Dreams. She remembered the promise that god made her followers. That they could dream of a better tomorrow. Of a time free of strife. And that through hard work, dedication, and allowing oneself to rest that the future could be shaped, that dreams could come true. And Caelyn's dreams had been of peace ever since Seniyad had enhanced her staff and planted a seed of hope in her heart.
She could not resist the god of murder's power this day. But tomorrow was another day, and tomorrow, with effort, could hold peace. She was sure of it.
Stepping forward, Caelyn, graceful, calm, and sure, sent a cascade of fiery missiles rocketing across the room at the spellcaster Xvart. One followed the other in a rain of pain, but it was administered carefully. Surgically. These enemies had to die, but if she did not try to stay her hand, then her mind remained her own. The staff wreathed her in flames with the remaining energy of the spell, but it was tight. Controlled. In her possession. She ignored the others for now, their pep talks, their commands, their disgust. She knew what she was doing- fighting for her dreams.

Re: Iron Crisis Pt3 IC
Grepha swoops in and viciously finishes off the whip-wielder, bringing the kill count to three of theirs to none of yours. The two remaining ones stand fast, whipping out at Sam (who evades both strikes) and Senna (who likewise blocks the painful leather). Grok's glaive whips out at the one that targeted Sam, and comes extremely close to beheading him in the process. He hangs on, by the narrowest of breaths.
Spoiler: Map
Grepha finishes off the leftmost guard.

Re: Iron Crisis Pt3 IC
Leaf's arrow and Senna's spell tear at the collective guards - though one manages to shrug off the radiant word. The arrow proves far more deadly, sticking into the soldier's side. Unfair though it may be, he runs not to strike at the tabaxi, but instead continues to slash and stab at Senna, his blades cutting deep with a pair of strikes that still pale in comparison to the injury he took.
Spoiler: Map
One passed save, two fails.
Leaf hits, knocking the soldier down to single digits.
