Mustafa woke up of a sudden, gaping for a breath of life. He had taken plenty of wounds in his experience with the battlefield, but never one that put him so close to death. The soldier priest was startled, and thinking the battle still raged on, sprawled back to his feet and raised his scepter to attack. Only he was only surrounded by allies, and his body collpased in relief. "We did it..." He managed to say, his vision blurring as he was suddenly struck by the pain of all his injuries. "Cursed be these wolves... I underestimated them..."
He looked up, trying to collect himself. "Who else has fallen? Who else have I failed to protect?" Despite the pain, he leaned on his scepter to pull himself up, and soon it was glowing with golden healing energy. "Does anyone require healing?"

Re: Castlevania II: Dracula's Curse (IC)
As you administer potions and healing, you spy remains near where the wolves were resting. Little remains of it aside from scattered bones and clothing, and a torn leather bag. Within the bag are a few bottles, and a small leather-bound folio containing a few pages describing the newly-devised potions which the bearer apparently intended to sell.
Spoiler: Contents
2 healing potions
1 greater healing potion
3 potions of restfulness - each removes one level of exhaustion when drunk. There is a note that drinking more than one at a time can cause internal upset.

While the others search the spot the wolves were resting, Mustafa administers healing magic on his allies by holding his scepter between his hands and saying an ancient prayer that begged for divine intervention. Re: Castlevania II: Dracula's Curse (IC)
The road has been gradually veering towards the lake. After you're done treating your injuries, you travel for no more than about 15 minutes before reaching an outrcropping of rock that juts up from the ground. Underneath an almost arch-like overhang is a dark doorway that, according to the sign carved above it, leads to the Laruba Monastery.
Next to the door is a rack holding some torches and a few candles, as well as a flint and a piece of metal to strike it against to throw sparks and light something if needed. You know that it will be about a two hour underground journey.
It's currently about 3 o'clock (3 hours of sunlight left). You have spent 5 hours traveling so far today.Things published on DM's Guild

The sight of Lake Laruba under the afternoon sky might have been beautiful were the circumstances different. Now, the faintest red that threatened to paint the sky reminded Mustafa of the blood of his loved ones, and of every innocent soul that was suffering under Dracula's Curse. He was glad to leave the Carpathian behind, though its open arms still bothered him from the corner of his eyes, stretching infinitely north and south of the Alba Woods, hugging him, reminding him they were never really free of its grasp. Even if the fellowship survived whatever evil lurked on this side of the mountains, the headquarters of the Belmonte Order were on the other side of the Carpathian. Until then, the Curse would only grow stronger. Evil remembers, her whispered in despair. Gods of light, send for us. A ray of sunlight. A spark of guidance. Anything.
While his companions analyzed their surroundings, Mustafa set up a small fire and retrieved a delicade packett from his baggage. It contained special herbs he had brought from his temple in Constantinople, far to the East. When burned, these dry herbs produced sweet-scented smoke that billowed in thick clouds. The fire grew, the special herbs burning fast and bright. Mustafa stood and waved his arm across the smoke left, and right, and left. "Shall we cross this tunnel immediately, o Gods of Light? Those of you who listen, and those who wish to help. Show us a glimpse of the future, of the path we're bound to travel, for there is only destiny, and there is no true freedom, as evil things are evil and good things are good. Our only choice is to fight our true nature or accept it, and embrace it. Help us destroy the evil things that roam this world, o Gods of Light, and protect the good things that remain."
He looks for shapes in the smoke. Riding knights, monsters and ghosts, ruined castles, ships and sea serpents, any glimpse or comments on legends and myths, symbols that could tell him about the future.

At the entrance to the tunnel, Sabian grabs the torches and candles and flint and steel, I don't think anyone will be following behind us that will need these, he says.
As they prepare to enter, Sabian nods quietly at Mustafa's revelation from his divinatory magic. Titus, if you want to lead the way until then, that's okay. But you have healing magic, so I think you should let me take the lead beyond what Mustafa is able to see.
If anything should be waiting for us in there, we'll need all the magic we have to survive, he says grimly.Last edited by Dr.Samurai; 2024-05-05 at 07:20 PM.

"I appreciate your bravey, master Skellegue, but allow me to elaborate." Mustafa might be wounded, cursed, muddy and exhausted, but he remained polite. Dracula couldn't take away his etiquette. "Let us assume there is some evil hidden in this tunnel. That Dracula's Curse has spread towards the lake. If that is the case, we can only expect the monastery to be overtaken by creatures of the night, as it happened in Holmwood Tower." The name sounded like a bad omen in his speech. "If that is the case, than it's best we rest here, under the moon and stars."

"Resting here and now likely won't give us an advantage - as long as the sun is out, Dracula's influence in the world is reduced - but once the sun goes down I suspect his servants will no longer flee from combat.
As for movement order: Alright, I'll stay right behind you. But we need to be ready to let our arcane and divine specialists do their flame thrower thing if we are accosted by another swarm."

Re: Castlevania II: Dracula's Curse (IC)
You descend the stairs and proceed through the tunnel. It is narrow and very straight, and tool-marks are few and far between. It seems that it may have been dug partly or wholly by magic.
It is dark aside from Chloe's light-bearing servant, but not particularly dank despite going under a lake. Specially cut channels in the roof and floor seem to carry a constant breeze in from the door above, and out from the far end below, keeping the air fresh. There are reinforcing supports every so often.
About an hour into the journey, the Light spell ahead washes over two dark wolf-like forms crouching behind support beams on either side, obviously pressing themselves against the wall to hide. You don't see actual fur - more shadow in the shape of a wolf. They are already into the Bright area of the light spell.

Everyone comes to a halt as the light of the construct illuminates wolf-like creatures attempting to hide behind two pillars. Can't tell if they're wolves, or wolf-weres, or something else, Sabian says to the others in hushed tones. He creeps forward in a defensive position.

Re: Castlevania II: Dracula's Curse (IC)
Sabian cautiously moves forward, while Chloe prepares a spell and Cassandra casts one. The light moves back slightly, and up to the low (10') ceilling.
One of the wolves runs forwards, leaping into the air and trying to bite Chloe's light-carrying Servant. Its eyes reflect the light with a red glow, but otherwise it appears to be made of living shadow, somehow. It jaws close around the servant, but fail to kill it.
Spoiler
Jump calculator says it can reach up to 10.5'H with a running start given its stats.
Shade Bite (1d20+5)[25] for (2d4+2)[6] crit! definitely a kill*forgot disadvantage from dodge, not a crit*
Servant Con save if needed (1d20+1)[14]
(1d20+5)[12] bad enough that most of the party probably knows where it is
Hide check if available
It lands 10' in front of Sabian, but not very quietly.
As soon as the light goes out, something else moves forwards, a humanoid shadow with large horns, no taller than a human. It must have been waiting for the darkness.
