The two toughs on the bridge straighten up a little as Bruno leads the approach, and they let him say his piece. One of them - the slightly larger one, whose shoulders slope right rather than left, crooks an eyebrow at the accented Breton in the air, but bobs his head somewhat amicably.

"You have the right of it. And there is a normal fee - for a group of your size, it's not so small. But given that you have come so far, perhaps you are right ,and we can find an arrangement. Goods are better to us than coin, right now. The dwarf's hammer is very fine, but expect he would be loathe to part with it. Maybe... A different instrument."

He gestures with his empty hand toward the scabbarded Company Blade on Bruno's hip.

While Righty is talking, Lefty reaches up a hand to scratch slightly at the stained red scarf. You catch a glimpse of a mark on his neck - a scabbed over puncture wound that could very well have another just below it.

Bruno is quite sure he didn't say anything offensive or fumble the approach - for some reason, these bridge 'guards' are more interested in hardware than lucre.

Jasmine was mostly ignoring the toughs, expecting a demand for a shilling or two. But when they demanded one of the company's weapons, she peered a bit more closely at them. She hisses to Bruno in her finest Classical, "Ixnay on the issionmay." And then in Bretonnian she adds, "Mission? I thought we was here to find a fence?"

Lefty's eyes track between the dwarf and his hammer, and Bruno, and the man with the faintly lambent eyes. He hesitates.

Small Gaétan adds his plea to your case. "Come, goodfellows, please - surely you would not part these visitors from weapons in dangerous Mousillon? What will they do if someone less reasonable comes to them - a pack of Ecorcheurs, or Garde Cimetiere perhaps? Best they are armed to put down such rabid dogs. Surely a few coins will serve as toll?"

Whether convinced, or convicted of some alternative ruse, the slouching pair share a glance and shrug their respective high shoudlers.

"Fine... Fine. Call it... ten ecu, and on your way."

Ten gold pieces is indeed an extortionate toll; but it's certainly a much smaller price than surrendering a best quality weapon, let alone a runic one. But is it a worthy price to avoid trouble so early into your arrival?

The goon has one hand resting on the stained half of a handaxe at his hip - wary like you are - but extends the other hand, to receive payment.

Bruno looks at the others of the group. He knows it's a lot of money, but they have it and it might be worth to pay up to get things moving. He also had to say a few things to the others which he'd rather not do in public.

You pay the extortionate toll, and the sloped goons stand aside for you to make your way across the bridge. Small Gaétan is visibly relieved, and hobbles forth to lead the way over the rancid south channel of the Grismerie.

It is surprising only to him, when the ambush falls. For Bruno and Jasmine, former professionals of the road and river well acquainted with the world of toll takers extortionate or otherwise, the move seems foolish. If you start ambushing you victims after they pay the extortionate toll, then very quickly people stop paying and there's no one to ambush either. Toll taking is a business like any other, and reaving one's own client base is bad for long term sustainability. But all of you were suspicious from the start, and when at the other end of the bridge a trio of Sang thugs emerge to block the way and box you in, and more begin scrambling up the sides of the bridge and crawling over, you are at least mentally prepared for the fight...

"Wait, wait - there is no need for-" Small Gaétan begins, pivoting about and hobbling at his full speed back towards the two who let you by. Lefty barely breaks stride to kick him. The toe of a ratty boot catches the diminutive guide full in the stomach and carries him into the air with a pitiful choking gasp. His heels clip the decrepit remains of a railing on one side of the bridge and he spins end over end to splat into the foetid water. His crutch, having remained somehow comically upright until this point, clatters to the boards; and the misshapen cretins close in with cudgels, axes and ropes in hand...

The thugs close in, jeering and whooping as the trap is sprung on prey however wary. Foremost in the assault are two of the goons from the far end of the bridge, who whip their bolas about and release them humming through the air at the companions. Wighard remains impressively composed as he leans out of the path of a spinning cord that might have bound up his neck, and the weapon clatters against the rubble banks of the Grismerie and splashes in, fruitless. But the second bola scythes through the air and slaps into Bertelis' shield with a ringing bang, its weighted cords whipping around him and toppling him mid-stride to the boards of the bridge. The knight growns and strains the bonds, but even as he does, the slope shouldered guards from behind track their eyes to the easy target.

The first of the flankers is up on the bridge and flings a loop of rope adroitly over the Baronet, pulling sharply so the noose contracts and cinches around his knees. Bruno is forced to the deck too, though with his blade free, the enemies are less immediately keen to close to exploit his vulnerability.

Wighard's grim invocation sends a fan of hunting sanguine missiles into the enemy, and a sinister chortles turn to alarmed shrieks. Seared, bloody wounds manifest all around the combat as a result - not least of which on Wighard himself, self inflicted for the sake of the combat edge.

"The witch - get the witch!" Lefty shouts, cradling a scarlet welter of sizzling blood at his side.

Lefty turns out to be a bit more of a brawler than the motley crew around him would suggest, and he takes Gimgroth's promise seriously enough that he leans back out of the swing of the hammer just enough to spare his teeth and jaw from being pulverized. With a flick of the wrist, he brings a dagger to hand and squares off with the dwarf, keeping his guard centered and striking out with opportunistic chops with his hatchet!

Meanwhile, another of the flankers takes the warning about the witch to heart and flings his lasso toward Wighard, but it cinches air to no avail and he withdraws it to prepare for another try.

Bertelis scuffs about on the deck of the bridge for long enough that he can strain the bolas cords away from his body with a surge of strength, and lever Bruno's borrowed sword into them to set himself free - but he's still on the ground while the rest of the enemy band closes in!

Bertelis first fails, then succeeds, to free himself.

It's Jasmine's turn! She's spoiled for targets. Only Lefty is presently engaged in melee; there is a Goon with an active bolas to throw and two more Flankers with lassos ready to fling, as well as Righty who seems slightly more threatening than most of these mooks.

With a comforting crack! Jasmine's pistol barks its dismay at the ambushers, and the bullet sinks into the chest of the bolas-goon at the end of the bridge. With a spray of blood, he staggers backwards and collapses to dangle ragdoll-wise over the rickety railing.

Two more flankers make their best afforts to get their lassos around the wizard, but the soldier-surgeon-heirophant-laypriest is lightfooted enough even injured as he is to evade both - as well as the axeblow from Righty who lumbers in, hoping to hack down a restrained foe but finding a skilled and elusive one untethered.

It's on for young and old, at that point, goons and flankers drawing cudgels and longknives and rushing into the fray. Two crowd into Bruno at the fore of the combat with blazing blade in hand, but neither can land a useful blow; another slips by and tries to swing his jagged cane-knife into the face of the toppled Bretonnian, but Bertelis has enough wherewithal to roll away from the blow. The enemy gives all they have, and it seems not to be enough...

Gimgroth enraged that somehow this buffoon before him got a dagger through his mail shirt enough to prick some skin and draw blood grunts and then grins as he unleashes a series of swipes, smashes and bashes with his hammer.

Another spray of sizzling blood magic arcs into the enemy, and a chorus of horrified screams rises through them. Most wounded of all is the left-slanted cretin who is given no time to enjoy his moment of superiority over the dwarf before him - a spike of burning blood lances into his chest and he drops to the ground, writhing and shivering, eyes fluttering in a fugue of pain. As Gimgroth's opponent drops to Wighard's attack, the opportunity to repay the favor comes nigh, and with a quick step the dwarf brings his hammer around at the right-sloped aggressor. The malformed harasser steps out of the way of the first blow, but then come three more; the final thumping into his chest with rib-gravelling power that sends a geyser of blood from the toppling foe's mouth.

Elsewhere, Bruno strikes fiery arcs in the air against his dual foes, keeping them back but landing no telling strike. With the two meanest foes down, the ambushers waver and consider their options - but only until a new figure arrives on the scene. Vaulting from the second story of the building on the far side of the bridge, he lands upright with barely a bend of the knees. In heavy Bretonnian mail and with a cowled crimson cloak trailing after him, he breaks into a run across the bridge toward the combat.

"FIGHT!", he roars with throaty menace; and the fear of what it means to flee the combat rapidly overtakes the fear of what it means to stay.

And so, the combat rages on. Bertelis is back on his feet and, like Bruno, holds is own but does not land a telling strike. A lasso whips through the air where Gimgroth's head would be if her were a human, retracting back into the panicking flanker's hands to spool for another attempt. And the red-cloaked enemy races toward the combat with terrible inhuman speed, a pair of flashing weapons in hand; a longsword in one, and thick-forged swordbreaker in the other.

Lefty is stunned for 10 turns and effectively out of the combat. Gimgroth kills Righty. Bertelis and Bruno both fail to drop enemies. And a new challenger has joined the melee!

The red-cloaked stranger is about 22 yards away from the main melee.

We can assume Bruno and Bertelis are fighting back to back against Goon4, Goon3, and Flanker8, so no one is outnumbered by 2:1. Gimgroth and Wighard have a breather for a moment; Jasmine's petite presence continues to permit her enemies to discount her threat. Flankers 6 and 7 are still not engaged, but are preparing to get involved directly. But it's Jasmine's turn first!

Jasmine stows her pistol and quickly unslings The Nutcracker from her back. She points it at the newest addition to the party, kneels, aims and fires in one smooth motion. The shot hits the red-cloaked knight's helm!

The flankers and goons fight as they are enjoined to, but they are base criminals, not proven adventurers; their blows slip aside Bruno, Bertelis, Wighard, and Gimgroth now that the ambush chaos has worn of. But the red-cloaked warrior is an unaccounted for factor, and he streaks toward the combat like a crimson arrow.

He is fast. Supernaturally fast. But not bullet dodgingly fast, and just as well. Jasmine had been assured the Nutcracker blew the head off Carlos von Carstein during the vampire wars. Here, it proves at least to have that decapitating urge, though it does not replicate the feat. The warrior jukes just enough that the shot doesn't hit square on, and punches through the corner of the left eyeslot, rending cowl and coif and throwing split links of mail. The impact twists and deforms the helmet on the knight's head and creates a terrible din that must be merciless for the wearer, sufficient that he staggers in his blitzing stride to reach up and rip the helm off. He casts it to the ground with a snarl.

Moonlight pale skin, fiery red hair, and the youthful beginnings of a beard to frame the face, with a trickle of blood from his bullet creased temple come into view. The features seen there are eerily familiar to all the Companions, but known only to one of them.

    "Maheiu! No! NO!"

Bertelis is paralyzed by revelation long enough for one of his opponents to strike out at one of his legs, driving him to kneel. When he stands, the malaise and depression that had burdened him that morning is replaced with a howling, grieving rage.

    "No, no! I'll kill - I'll-"

Most of the rest is inarticulate. So it seems, all of a sudden, the party's objectives have narrowed. The assailant here is not the Red Knight himself, but Bertelis' brother taken captive so long ago. His allegiance is shown in his cloaks color, it seems; there is no rescue to perform, anymore. Only revenge. How long his fate has been concluded cannot be known - Was it when they were detained in Bordeleaux? Delayed in L'Anguille? Who can know such a thing? But the tale of Landuin of Mousillon is a tragic one, and Mahieu is just another knight whose tale ended here, in miserable solitude. Such is the way of the world; even good gods do not preside over abundant goodness.

Mahieu's reaction to his brother's inconsolable outburst appears to be bland recognition, turning to agitation as his skin begins to smoke in the clouded sunlight. With a dancer's lightness he throws himself over the side of the bridge, only to scabbard his sword in the same motion, seize one of the climbing pegs in its side, and vanish into the shadow beneath.

A grand rolling of absolute ass from the ambushers, nothing hitting that could possibly do damage.

Vampire Spawn Mahieu du Roche leaves his eyeshot helm on the bridge and takes cover beneath the structure. We're back around to Wighard, Bruno and Gimgroth.

Wighard and Gimgroth are engaged back to back with Flankers 6 and 7. They only have handweapons drawn, so they have no free parry this turn, though they appear to be dodgy.

Bertelis and Bruno are back to back against Goons 3, 4, and Flanker 8. They flubbed their all out attacks this turn, so they cannot defend themselves at all. This turn, Schlapp pulls Small Gaétan to safety out of the 'water' of the Grismerie, and will be back at his master's side to attack next turn.

    R3 Wighard W 3/13 FP 4/5 Init 10

Wounded and unarmed Wighard is left apparently at the mercy of his assailant, but at least he has done enough to ensure his companions will win.

In his last moments his mind turns to a scroll that was on the wall in his suite at the Light College

    You only live twice
    Once when you're born
And once when you look death in the face.

However he doesn't stare death, in the form of Righty, in the face for very long as his grim look of impending triumph vanishes as Gimgroth dispatches him with characteristically brutal efficiency.

Of course there is still a melee going on, and Wighard readies axe and shield and concentrates on staying alive whilst his companions mop up

Down below Schlapp is exiting the river with Small Gaétan as Maheiu drops underneath the bridge, the river does not smell nice, but even over that the smell of an incipiently immolating vampire is distinctive.

The Dire Wolf meanwhile does nothing except keep guard over Gaétan and eyes on Maheiu whilst Wighard and Kwolf confer

Can we fix that or it just a matter of killing him as fast as possible?

    Well...
