A terrible explosion suddenly rocks the entire city, and the ground shakes as if an earthquake were tearing the city apart. The sky lights up from a blast many times the brightness of the sun, and you are certain that certain death has at last come to claim you. As the brightness fades, you look toward the Mages' Quarter and see the last remnants of the horror burning directly towards the sky in a seemingly endless stream of raw, burning mana which threatens to tear reality asunder. What seems like an eternity passes as you stare, though it is likely only a few seconds, and at last the blast fades away. In the distance, you hear a building collapse, and you are certain that something horrible has been unleashed upon the city.

When you scare off the serving maid and ignore the massive explosion for now, the Marquise says, "It all started with my great-grandfather, a viscount. He sought wealth and power for his family, and made some rather shady deals to do so. One pact that he made which we have been unable to escape from said that our family would rise in power every generation, so long as the second oldest son became a priest of Nerull and the oldest surviving daughter was sacrificed on her 30th birthday. The way the deal is worded, we do not get to back out four generations later. They took the second oldest son 25 years ago from his cradle. I have never heard of my baby brother ever again. The inheriting brother is currently attending to the king in his ailing health, but he is still in town. The rest of the family is on our out-of-town estate. Sesbury tradition requires that I live here on our in-town property as a glorified hostage."

She takes in a breath of air as she prepares herself to say the next secret she is about to reveal.

"I am 29. I turn 30 next week. Except for my twin sister out in the countryside, I am the oldest daughter of our house. We do not know which of us is older. The nursemaid couldn't tell us apart as infants. I fear that whatever mysterious forces are at work enforcing this pact may try to take both of us and determine which is older. Hopefully, the younger will be let go. We do not know for sure though. There has never been this issue before. When my sister went missing from the family estate last month, I knew it was a matter of time before I was taken as well. That is the real reason why I hired you. We do not know who the assailants are or how to identify them, except that they would bear the sign of the grinning god of war. When you described a tattoo on that horrid creature with a smile on its face, I knew that this was it. I will be taken very soon, probably tonight. None of the other guards my family has hired have ever worked. Why should mine?"

"Perhaps because they were not knowledgeable about the mystical arts, and had to rely on defending your family with sword and steel. There are many things a sword cannot kill, and things armor cannot stop. The enlightened mind, however, is a totally different matter. We will keep a close vigil on you tonight, and ensure no harm befalls you. You have my word"

you see some of the worry ease off of her face. "I do feel much safer knowing that the three of you are here to protect me. Still, I really want to know more about the ones who want to capture me. Would the three of you please find out for me tomorrow? I should be safe enough at my mother's house. Even while she is gone, she keeps rather powerful mercenary mages on watch. They should keep me safe for tomorrow during the day. If y'all could return tomorrow night though, just to be safe, I would deeply appreciate it. I still will give each of you a week's wages should you find out more about the tattoo."

"Thank you." She then quietly goes about the rest of her day. How do y'all do the rotation for keeping watch?

The party begins its watch. roll spot checks and listen checks. Where are y'all posting the watch? Her bed has a canopy that she uses at night to give her complete privacy. She will allow y'all to be in the room or to wait outside her door. Her bedroom has no exterior windows.

How long can a human go without sleep before incurring fatigue? Because I don't need the pp from rest, so if I could stay up, I probably will. Otherwise, I'll stay rigth next to one of the 'forged, so they can quickly wake me.

humans become fatigued if they go a night without sleep. you wouldn't become fatigued until morning. however, in order to regain pp, you will have to rest up from this lack of sleep sometime to remove the fatigue, as well as rest 8 hours to replenish yourself.
