Re: Simple Q&A (by RAW) VIII [All Games]
A 226: You threaten the area adjacent to you, as "normal." (see page 156 of the Core Rulebook, paragraph under the first 2 bullet points) At least, that's what it seems. Apparently, Saga characters are capable of shooting at people right next to them rather quickly with pistols. If you have the Gun Club talent, you can also make a melee attack with your gun... allowing you to make AoOs with your Heavy Weapon or Rifle, as well, albeit with only 1d6 damage. I find Martial Arts better for a Rifle/Heavy Weapons user... you can kick someone who's trying to run away even if you've got a two-handed gun in your hands.

Re: Simple Q&A (by RAW) VIII [All Games]
Q. 222 (continued)
I think the rule your quoted is intended only for a size-mismatch situation, e.g. a dwarf wielding a gnome-crafted Small Dwarven Urgrosh. With a -2 attack penalty (which people would ignore, if it meant they got to TWF with only one hand; hence the clarification).
The intent of my question was not for the weapon in question to be undersized. Matthew, you're probably right (and I'll proceed accordingly), but do you have any explicit justification from a text? You can call me Draz.

Q. 227
If a creature's stat block lists SLAs and a caster level, is it taken as given that if you advance it's HD or give it class levels, the SLA caster levels go up for each new hit die/level? In some cases, the entry makes this clear, in other cases, it does not. One example is the Yuan-ti Pureblood in the MM - it's SLAs are listed as CL 4th, and it has 4HD.My winning competition entries: Kinvig Arrumskor | The Great Pumpkinhead | Wynfrith d'Acker

If you advance in racial HD (upto the maximum it says), their CL increases with your HD. Class levels don't count.

Re: Simple Q&A (by RAW) VIII [All Games]
After further review of the original text in the PHB I can see that this is indeed a reference to wielding a weapon of disproportionate size. Unfortunately, the SRD removed this reference and the Rules Compendium also removed this reference.
However, the intend is clear even if the RAW provides a contradiction between table and text.
The explicit justification for Matthew's point (if we choose the sensible interpretation ignored by the RC and SRD) is that a two-handed weapon requires two hands to wield and use effectively, so the combination you suggest is not possible even if you just want to use one end.

Re: Simple Q&A (by RAW) VIII [All Games]
Only what Lord Lorac Silvanos mentions, that the weapon has to be wielded two handed unless the character is larger than the weapon. If a weapon is wielded two handed it cannot be used with a light shield, the free hand in the case of a light shield cannot be used to wield a weapon (though a buckler is a different story and could be used with it).
Interestingly, the Gnome Hook-Hammer was a small double weapon in 3.0, which meant humans could use it as a one handed weapon without penalty, whilst in 3.5 Gnomes are usually restricted to "small-sized" Gnomish Hook-HammersIt is a joyful thing indeed to hold intimate converse with a man after one’s own heart, chatting without reserve about things of interest or the fleeting topics of the world; but such, alas, are few and far between.

A 229
Generally the answer is via divine spells. In the core rules, the Heal spell alleviates both nauseated and stunned conditions. In the Spell Compendium, the Panacea spell will do the same. Other spells, like Favor of the Martyr, will allow you to avoid these conditions in the first place.

I do not think it is covered explicitly, but there might be examples here and there.
There should be no trouble with climbing or swimming creatures given the right saddle.
Many burrowing creatures on the other hand does not leave a usable tunnel after them and for these bringing a rider probably is not an option. For those that do make a tunnel it seems reasonable to allow it if their physical appearance supports it.

Races of Stone seems to indicate that you need a special saddle to ride a burrowing mount. Specifically, it includes rules for a special "burrower's saddle" that allows a character to stay in the saddle and avoid harm while the mount is burrowing through a series of straps and leather "shields" that block dirt/rocks/other materials. Anything non-RAW would require DM approval.
There are no standard formula for converting any existing animal into the appropriate category as an animal companion, but simple comparison goes a long way.Last edited by Lord Lorac Silvanos; 2009-01-18 at 02:34 PM.

Re: Simple Q&A (by RAW) VIII [All Games]

Several sourcebooks also include animals that, by RAW, can be selected as animal companions (such as Monster Manual 3's Fleshraker dinosaur and Races of the Wild's Brixashulty). Each such creature usually has a section called "[Creature]s as Animal Companions" or something like that somewhere near the end of its monster entry that talks about what level you can select that creature at and other pertinent information.
I believe PHB2 also has a sidebar that lists additional animal companions from other non-PHB sources, in the section about Druids from chapter 1 or 2. (I don't have the book handy to give an actual page number. Sorry.)Last edited by RTGoodman; 2009-01-18 at 02:47 PM.

Re: Simple Q&A (by RAW) VIII [All Games]
Q: 233If I were to use a template to increase size for my character (the one in question is a feral half-minotaur, let's say human), would this table be factored in? e.g. would I get the +8 str, +4 con, -2 dex, simply for raising my size to large, on top of the bonuses gained from the template?

How do power attack and Spirited charge interact?
Is the additional damage from power attack multiplied by the spirited charge multiplier along with the rest of the damage, or does it work like Frenzied Beserker + Leap attack?

Enhancement bonuses (masterwork or magical) do not stack; use the higher of the arrows or the bow. Otherwise, add all abilities of both items.

Can you initiate a strike that takes a standard action to activate as an AoO? What about as a free attack given Improved Trip after tripping a foe?

A235
No. You may use a strike only by expending the appropriate initiation action. For most strikes this is a standard action. For some this is a full round action. In no case is it an attack action, which is what an AoO or Improved Trip granted attack is. A standard action can be spent to take an attack action, but the opposite is not true.Like 4X (aka Civilization-like) gaming? Know programming? Interested in game development? Take a look.

Q 236
If I have the Versatile Spellcaster feat from Races of the Dragon (IIRC), could I use it to cast spells that are higher level than I actually have access to at that point for the purposes of metamagic?
For example, say I'm a 5th-level sorcerer with Extend Spell and Versatile Spellcaster. Could I use two 2nd-level spell slots to cast an extended Melf's Acid Arrow, even though that would be a 3rd level spell and I don't have access to 3rd level spells?Love the Third Amendment?
