Eurovision song contest
The silliest music festival in the world is going down tonight. I've kept half an eye on the semi-finals, and my favorite so far is the Danish Viking power ballad. Hungary seems to be leading in the Rock category, and the Netherlands are representing the USA this year.
Anyone else watching this evening? (Or I guess this afternoon in the America's, or early tomorrow morning in Australia, which is joining in again this year.)
(Note on that last clip: the festival rules are that you have to sing live, no recorded voices, but due to the complexity of soundchecks and such you can't play live, all music has to be recorded. That's why they just stopped playing their instruments halfway through, everybody knows they were faking it anyway.)Last edited by Lvl 2 Expert; 2018-05-12 at 02:58 AM.

Re: Eurovision song contest
I'll be watching! I haven't missed a Eurovision final since 2006. I haven't heard any of the songs though; I like to decide my favourite on the night.

Unfortunately the TV is out, I'll have to wait a couple of weeks to see the UK lose completely.

Re: Eurovision song contest
I will always hold a soft spot for Eurovision for introducing me to Flor-de-Lis' "Todas as ruas do amor", an absolutely lovely song. Plus, it's always had at least a few good songs every year.

Re: Eurovision song contest
Will probably not watch Eurovision this year : < I have this weekend school of mine and I cannot spend up-to-midnight watching this show : <
(I'm gonna watch Eurovision on the YT the day after, though, they have an official Youtube channel.)Last edited by Kaworu; 2018-05-12 at 11:07 AM.

Re: Eurovision song contest
Hungary with a metal act atm. Song is OK, Vocals sound live. But not a single cable in sight for the guitarists and the bassist, and it's quite interesting how the drummer can make a single tom sound like three different ones :)
So it looks like ESC is the same as always.Last edited by Whoracle; 2018-05-12 at 03:53 PM.

Re: Eurovision song contest
You're not allowed live instruments in Eurovision. It was pretty weak, as metal goes, but I might have to vote for it on principle.
My favourite so far has been Czech Republic. That was fun. Netherlands is shaping up well, too.Lydia Seaspray by Oneris!

Re: Eurovision song contest
Yup, it's a "we have to do the final soundcheck really fast" thing. Voices on the other hand have to be live. Since it's in the rules people tend not to pretend too well.
I think Cyprus (currently on) is going for the prize for "most disco costume".
By the way, has anyone figured out exactly how that Moldavian act with the three doors manages to show three women at the same time while there are only two there? (Maximum allowed number of people on stage is six.) One of the guys standing in? Fake legs?Last edited by Lvl 2 Expert; 2018-05-12 at 04:06 PM.

Re: Eurovision song contest
Personally, I am sad that Eläkeläiset didn't make it to Eurovision in 2010. On a side note, Satellite was terrible.

Massive cultural bias aside, then i do think Higher Ground deserves a top 5 spot.

It's tight at the top! You know, that Austrian guy was pretty good. He deserves to be up there in the top three.

Re: Eurovision song contest
This thread is just what I needed to cure my nostalgia for the Old Country.
"None of us likes to be hated, none of us likes to be shunned. A natural result of these conditions is, that we consciously or unconsciously pay more attention to tuning our opinions to our neighbor’s pitch and preserving his approval than we do to examining the opinions searchingly and seeing to it that they are right and sound." - Mark Twain

But the winner of the popular vote, Israel, is also the overall winner. That's always nice.

Re: Eurovision song contest
Oh, lovely song! Thanks!
I've thought of listening to all Eurovision songs ever, but there are just so many! I never got past the nineties, and even then I don't think I've ever heard every single one, only the top 10-15, I think.
Shame Rasmussen didn't win, I really liked their song.
I still don't know why Iceland didn't do better last year. Greta Salome's song and performance were great!Last edited by The Troubadour; 2018-05-13 at 10:10 PM.

Re: Eurovision song contest
Eurovision is so cool! I wish we had an Americavision. Like countries from south and north America for example.
