If they are able to punch through the ice themselves, it negates Lien's cleverness in getting the yrthak to do it for them. From a plot point of view the ice needs to be tough enough to force that tactic. Of course they might find a thin point by searching.

If they punched through the ice themselves, the yrthak rider would be a lot more suspicious when they "fell" in. Making it look like an accident is the better plan for actually getting the rider to leave.

Maybe they'll pull off what Azog did in the Battle of the Five Armies movie

That's exactly what they did. Lien spotted a thin patch of ice (you can tell because it's slightly darker than the surrounding ice) and had O-Chul stand with her on top of it when they took the yrthak's attack.

That might be a wee bit difficult considering the yrthak and it's rider are flying away right now.
Unless O-Chul and Lien have been hiding a balista this entire time I don't see them pulling it off.
But I'm sure they can find a way.

I mostly do it as a form or sarcastic mockery of the late artisanal movement. There's much good to be had there, but much to poke fun at, such as artisanal toast (A REAL THING).

And performers cannot be artisans. Artisans produce concrete "useful" things like firewood, pencils, and toast; artists create stuff that's not that useful but is artsy.

I am an artist as a bard, an artisan as a woodworker, a Marine when it comes to wreaking violence on my enemies, a biker when it comes to partying.

Punching through ice will take some time, the sonic attack was area effect.

Pretty much high level melee can punch through steel doors with their bare hands, given a bit of time.

Actually anyone who is capable of doing at least 11 damage will eventually break down a 2" thick iron door.

A level 1 commoner with a greataxe will still connect MOST of the time, and 2/12 times he connects he'll roll an 11 or a 12 and do 1 or 2 damage, respectfully. I mean he'll have to hit the door 90 times to break it down but eventually it will come down.

I prefer the much more concise "Don't muddle the issue with facts" myself.

I meant an even thinner point. Somewhere they could break through without sonic assistance.

But I guess now there's no time pressure maybe they can break through anywhere.

The rider hung around a long time - hours, probably, anyway long enough for the storm to stop - so presumably thought it quite likely the paladins were still alive. There's no reason to think the rider was tricked into leaving, just outwaited.

Of course the rider was tricked. He* left because he thought the paladins drowned or froze to death. They didn't. The rider waiting for them to re-emerge doesn't change that.

If they had broken the ice themselves on purpose and gone under, the rider would have been more likely to assume they would survive and I think less likely to leave, because why would their response to being attacked be to commit suicide in a frozen lake?
