I think the movie turned it more into the a fantastical fairy tale, from what I've heard of the book (I have it at home, and I'll be reading it soon. Just picked it up from the library...) but honestly, I love that kind of thing- if done well.

And no, the book is not always better.
Example: The Princess Bride.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here...The book was much better then the movie.
