The big advantage of modern guns however, are their relative rapid fire (if not actual rapid fire) abilities. I can only image how well a protection from arrows spell holds up under fire from a minigun.

It seems to me that the intention of the spell is for people who are going into areas where there are likely to be dozens of arrows flying at them at once. A minigun in this case would be the equivalent of 5+ crossbows firing simultaneously. If the spell can stand up to the real thing, there should be no reason why it can't hold up to a substitution.
