Re: Yet another fantasy gamer comic: discuss
Idries, probably, since Sidonie is his friend and was under his protection.
Astrid has no reason to care and a good reason to let the thugs get away with it: it'll get them out of her hair for as long as they need to realize their mistake. Though since she seems the adventurer type, she may want to go after the XPs of a good old "damsel-in-distress" quest.Hark! An avatar drawn by Kate Beaton!

Re: Yet another fantasy gamer comic: discuss
I'm confused, too. And how can someone confuse a noble woman who have spent her life with kitting and dancing with a trained warrior? Shouldn't they have a different build? This somehow feels forced.

Re: Yet another fantasy gamer comic: discuss
Also, her outfit. Far, far too different not to notice upon sighting Astrid and well before actually laying hands on the woman, especially from behind, especially since he'd been with Sidonie for some time prior to the switcheroo.
And why the hell is he staring at the fake when it's immediately obvious he needs to go bounding off to go commit some assault on some old guys and vikings.
Or is he hard of hearing and only Astrid heard them?

Re: Yet another fantasy gamer comic: discuss
Well, I wouldn't nitpick if she had another hairstyle, different clothing, different hair colour, a strange accent or a completely different face; these are subtle things hard to recognize on a woman. But a life as warrior, particularly as an archer, leads to a different built of the chest, and thus to slightly different boobs. And that's impossible to overlook.

Sidonie is an archer.
Kinda has to be obvious to us as readers they're different, otherwise we're the ones who'll be getting confused.Last edited by Kajhera; 2010-10-24 at 07:19 AM.

Re: Yet another fantasy gamer comic: discuss
some other way of revealing it to us would have been far, far better.
As in, I dunno, reveal they look alike before having someone who knows Sidonie mistake Astrid for her when he had just been in Sidonie's company and she had been wearing something completely different.
maybe set up some kind of comic where they're doing things in parallel that culminated in them both taking something off of them that would highlight that astrid is a doppelganger while also showing sidonie in the same page.

So Sid's grandfather disappeared 60 years ago. If he went across the sea it's possible he had more kids and that Astrid and Sid are related too.

Re: Yet another fantasy gamer comic: discuss
Sidone was a hobby archer, Astrid could cut trough a dragon's throat. And she was a warrior, she should be tanned and sinewy, while Sidone should be fair skinned and have a little higher body fat. For a stranger that's maybe not enough, but for somebody that knew her and loves her that should be enough. Also she should have quite an accent, if she's from another continent.
I'm not minding the whole scenario, but it just felt too fast and too forced. I think what Coidzor suggested would have worked better. The problems would remain, but the willing suspense of disbelieve would be higher.

Re: Yet another fantasy gamer comic: discuss
Outside the YAFGC story line, I'm following the "Rich got ripped off by an art thief" story. Apparantly, someone lifted the caracature of the 11th Doctor, and put it on a t-shirt and is now selling them on eBay.
The "Thief" claims he has the picture on his wall... Somehow, I don't believe him. Thanks to Ceika (X2), Yeril, Holammer and Dr. Bath for the Avatars!

Re: Yet another fantasy gamer comic: discuss
Looking about on the YAFGC website, Lady Sidonie of Falconheim was a PC in a Pendragon game, so I doubt she's only a hobby archer.
I do agree that to someone who knows Sid well, they should be able to tell the difference easily (Astrid apparently wears full armour regularly for starters, which puts muscle on and callouses in odd places), unless it's one of the rare occasions of doppelgänger syndrome as Coidzor said.
The problem is, that in the D&D world, Doppelgängers are a separate race and usually regarded as not friendly.
Edit: Apparently it's more common than you think as the human brain remembers a person by certain facial details and if they're similar enough, the two people can be mistaken: ABC news article.Last edited by Brother Oni; 2010-10-25 at 01:53 PM.

Re: Yet another fantasy gamer comic: discuss
I know pretty much everyone speaks
EnglishCommon in D&D/D&D-esque worlds, but yeah I really would have thought the *accent* would have given things away....
Speech patterns, muddled confusion about things she "should" know are one thing. Improbable physical similarity is another: barring the deliberate use of magic/shapeshifting, these two women would look at least somewhat different to close acquaintances unless they really are identical twins separated at birth.
But if my best friend, longtime crush, or sister came home suddenly and inexplicably speaking with, say, a Swedish accent I would think that alarm bells would be going off.
Unless Astrid has a magical ability/bauble or the highly developed secret-agent/actress extraordinary ability to affect the speech patterns, accents of those around her...
Eh, it's a plot device, whatever.
