How straight does a run action have to be?

It must be straight in all regards. That is, you must be able to draw an unobstructed straight line from the start position to the end position. If that line isn't vertical or horizontal, your character's movement through squares must be as close to that line as possible. This line may not pass through difficult terrain, and the elevation rate may not change (the line must be straight with regards to vertical movement as well). This means you can't run across flat ground, and at the end, go up a shallow set of stairs.

If an ability allows for one turn during a run action, that can be a change in the elevation rate or a change in one of the 4 cardinal directions.
