If you mean how to draw them, I use one piece for the "front" and anotherfor the part behind the head (and another if it covers the chin).

    ban comic sans.

I personally use Komika Text, and would recommend that.

I'm pretty sure you can set the default in whatever vector graphics program you use, you can for certain in Inkscape and Illustrator.

Problem: Inkscape won't let me put in bold or italic text for some reason. I'm using the latest version.

If you're trying to write the text, and then bold it with the buttons on the top, don't.

Try instead pressing the huge letter "T" at the top of the screen. That way, you'll edit the type and the way it's written (bolded, itallics, and underlined).

That way it works perfectly for me.

Other than Shojo (Who is a good guide, but I'd like to know if there are any others), are there any "old" characters? I want to make an avatar I'm creating look "old", and I'm not sure how to do that .

On a non bald avatar it looks more like a literal shadow than 5 oh clock shadow (that effect has some use on the avatar I'm making, but it doesn't show a stubble.)

Free hand something in orange, remove the stroke, set it to 70% opacity, draw a smaller shape only yellow, then draw an even smaller shape in white. You should have something like in this pic.

I prefer a different method where you draw a random firey shape add in curves, remove the stroke, fill it red, blur it, then just copy it and make the shape progressively smaller with progressively lighter colors.

there are actually multiple ways to do fire with inkscape, as well as with water and lightning, it just depends on your personal taste

by the way, if any of you are interested in making KoC (Keychain of Creation) style stuff, just ask me since I decided OOTS-style stuff wasn't good enough for me, I instead make good KoC-style art.

Thank you both for the advice, I'll give it a try later.

As for KoC style, is there really a big difference? The heads are different and the art is larger but to my eye that's all I see.
