Re: Twilight - Love it, or Hate it?
time for the new member to pitch in his two bits...
I saw the movie the other day, and am still trying to get my hands on the book. [I did get my hands on "New Moon" and decided "Hey, you get what you get" and so read it]
ultimately, I think that Twilight is "in-between", which I didn't think was possible. (you either love it or hate it. wow, I use parenthesis too much).
that said, I think that it's not as bad as people make it out to be, but similarly, and more prominently, it's not as "OMG SQUEE" as people make it out to be. it's just a story. Sure it's got some cheesy parts/lame parts/whatever, but being a writer, I can relate to that sort of thing.
that said, it's the way things are.

Re: Twilight - Love it, or Hate it?
I'll keep this nice and simple, since so many other people seem to share my opinion. I saw the movie, and do not wish to read the book. Sparkling/diamond-skin/whatever is bad. Glorifying abusive relationships is bad. And another thing... women often complain that men are too superficial, but they turn around and squee over Edward who has no other defining characteristic other than being "hawt." I even went to one of those "looking for my edward cullen" pages, and found that one lady said that she cries herself to sleep because she has not found a guy who intimidates and overwhelmed her because he is so incredibly handsome. Really? Nevermind that he stalks you and may possibly beat you, as long as he looks good it doesn't matter, right? Wh... why? You know what? I really don't as bad about how superficial I am now. I mean, she doesn't need to be no... Haley Barey, but she shouldn't be homely either... Gah. Off-topic. Uh... Yeah. Twilight = Bad. Books written by Darren Shan = Good. (Not great. But still good)
P.S. Stephine Meyer is kinda hot.

Re: Twilight - Love it, or Hate it?
Never saw it, never read it, never will.
I am a sucker for vampires (pun intended, obviously!). But there is nothing I have found about these books that makes me want to read it. Both the bad and good reviews reek of "worst kind of Romance Novel" to me.
Now other "girly" vamp stories I have read and actually liked (Trueblood, which is also a good TV series. Not to mention Moonlight).

Re: Twilight - Love it, or Hate it?
At the risk of derailing this thread, I'd like to know what people think White Wolf did to vampires. I saw that metioned a few times here, and I'm a bit confused.

Can't remember if anyone posted it before, but I found The Agony Booth's recap of the Twilight movie to be fairly entertaining.

Re: Twilight - Love it, or Hate it?
I generally like WoD vampires. Since as a game it required the ability to customize your character it allowed for virtually anyone's conception of a vampire. The clans pretty well covered all the potential vampire archetypes and the powers covered pretty much any ability you could attribute to them. While I personally dislike the artsy, haughty types (Toreador) that just means I don't play them.
I liked WoD's set of weaknesses, too. It chucked out some of the sillier stuff like garlic, no-reflection and the inability to cross running water (in most cases, of course). It left some of the crucial details: stakes through the heart causing instant immobilization, fire being especially damaging and sunlight being almost instantly deadly. It made it possible for a mortal to beat a vampire, but unlikely that a vampire would inadvertently reveal itself or suddenly have its pursuit halted by a creek.
I probably am terribly biased though, as WoD was my first serious exposure to vampires outside of The Lost Boys.

Re: Twilight - Love it, or Hate it?
I haven't read the books, and I haven't seen the movie, but I think I love Twilight. It's undoubtedly a bad story, but it's done five things worth loving it for:
1: Made more people read.
2: Renewed the interest in speculative fiction.
3: Shown that human females can be just as shallow and obsessed with physical appearance as males.
4: Gotten people to talk about the effect descriptions of unhealthy, fictitious relationships can have on young people.
5: Once again confirmed that the geek community is by no means as enlightened as its members want to believe.

"White and delightsome," heh. Actually, I'm pretty sure Meyer is still active in the church and a portion of her profits from her books go to there.

Re: Twilight - Love it, or Hate it?
Have to say I'm in the "neither of the above" camp.
Saw the movie, thought it was decent. Mostly I enjoyed looking at the pretty mountain scenery. Bella is kind of boring, but eh, that's normal for female leads in F/SF stories. Very few writers can resist the temptation to make their heroine either universally adored or ridiculously hypercompetent.
I thought the baseball game was hilarious. :) Edward is completely without personality, but then that's kind of the point. He's a blank slate that you can project your own desires onto.
Worth watching, not worth buying. I doubt I'll read the books, though I might look at them some time just out of curiosity over what everyone's so worked up about.
So, no love, no hate. Sorry. :P

Re: Twilight - Love it, or Hate it?
My favorite anti-twilight line:
"Twilight doesn't have any plot twists because the plot is so thin that if you twist it it will break!"

Re: Twilight - Love it, or Hate it?
30 Days of Night and Underworld weren't too long ago (though its influence on the genre is debateable) and True Blood and "Let the Right One In" are both excellent. There's plenty of unlife in the genre yet.
My new goal is just to point Twilight fans in the direction of better stuff they may enjoy.
