I think this will establish LoS, so I won't bother spoilering it. If it doesn't, oh well, the match will go faster.

Since the door is not open, I 5-ft step to M23, and open the door. If I see him, I perform the following:
Free Action: Use Hexblade's Curse on him (Will Save DC 13)
Swift Action: Activate Death Devotion.

If he is within striking distance, I attack with Steely Strike.

Yeah, I was hiding behind the door... Surprise. Figured it would give me the best chance of not getting killed.

Here's the thing. I had a readied action to move. But since I know your attack is gonna miss me anyway, I don't really have to take it. Which doesn't really seem fair to you because it would change the rest of your turn. Is there an precedent on this?

Will Save: (1d20+3)[14] Yeah, that should be a 10 not a 14. I should probably not be posting this late. So I have been cursed.

Well, this is unusual. See, it is in my best interest for you to move, as that would provoke an attack of oppourtunity from me, giving me another chance to hit you.

Your decision to move would have been made before you saw the result of my attack, had I waited for an LoS check after opening the door. However, due to the order of events, I would not have yet activated either my Hexblade's Curse or my Death Devotion, so it wouldn't be an instant death attack if it hit you.

I don't believe we have any precedent here. What do you want to do about it?

You might not have gotten an attack, as I have tumble and know how to use it.

Since I have a feeling we're gonna end up having a rematch anyways, and dropping to the loser's bracket will net me a few more xp and gold. I'll take my readied action and see what happens.

Wait, you were in M24? I'm in M23 with a reach weapon. I couldn't have attacked you in the first place unless you took your readied action, nor can I 5-ft step away to hit you as I already used it. I also don't get my AoO, since I don't threaten where you are.

I suddenly feel very screwed, since I wasn't aware you could stand in the door spaces without opening the doors.

I need to go to bed. I was in M25, trying to get to M24. Although techinically I think you could get into M24 using the rules for squeezing. Depending on how thick the doors are.

In some cases, you may have to squeeze into or through an area that isn’t as wide as the space you take up. You can squeeze through or into a space that is at least half as wide as your normal space. Each move into or through a narrow space counts as if it were 2 squares, and while squeezed in a narrow space you take a -4 penalty on attack rolls and a -4 penalty to AC.

I can't attack, I can't move because I took a 5-ft step this turn, I don't really want to move because it will provoke AoO, I've already activated Death Devotion and my Hexblade's Curse, and I have nothing else to do, so I there's just one thing to do: Ready an action that probably won't get triggered.
