The man’s face was stone, though his eyes cycled between fury and despair. He heard not a word of the priest’s prayer over his wife and son. He was non-responsive to attempts at conversation, and left before the banquet began.

During the weeks that followed the funeral, between bouts of weeping and raging, his mind was filled with a terrible clarity. He searched through the great library and his own extensive archives, copying and combining ancient, forbidden rituals. The gods had taken his wife, but he would take her back.
