Re: KataraAltinaII's Premature Not So Short & To-The-Point Random Banter #130
In all fairness, I'm been at uni for the last week and I've only just got internet in my room here. But I should be able to travel through time pretty darn soon.
I'm trying.
I've joined the Gilbert & Sullivan Society too.
We do a lot of independant research. And technically we also have a compulsory tutorial once a week too. And a semi - optional class on what our next (weekly) essay is about.
But mostly independant research.
I CAN USE THE BODLEIAN LIBRARY!!
Most popular club in the world.
Well, there's only sixteen people in our entire house and six on the top two floors so we're already prtty close knit. Lots of DVD nights and tea parties. And things.
EDIT:
@Phase: Mine's on Dickens. Specifically: Is the love of money the root of all evil in Dickens' work? Answer: no.
At least I don't have to read it out this week.Last edited by CurlyKitGirl; 2009-10-12 at 05:05 PM.

Whenever I go off to so-and-so university, if they don't have a Gilbert and Sullivan society so help me I will force one upon them.
My whole family's going down to see Ruddigore on New Years.
So it really doesn't matter, so it really doesn't matter, so it really doesn't matter -- matter, matter, matter, matter...

Heh. Mikado was my first one as well. It's a good way to start. Lots of ridiculousness between Koko and Pooh-Bah.
"Or then, as Paymaster General, I could so cook the accounts that, as Lord High Auditor, I should never discover the fraud. But then it would be my duty, as Archbishop of Titipu, to denounce my dishonesty and deliver myself into my own custody as First Commissioner of Police..."
We're doing HMS Pinafore. It's going to be great!
@^: Noble fellow! Our society's going to see Ruddigore at the Theatre Royal in March.Last edited by Thufir; 2009-10-12 at 06:01 PM.

I got thumping dubstep at four in the morning from my fellow hall members when I was too sick to get to meals. I think he wins.
I was gonna join lots of things but was too sick to join in on the first two weeks so now I have no idea what's going on. I only go to scifi and anime societies regularly. I know when and where they are at least.

Yup, Mikado performance this term. Hilary term is . . . actually, I think it may be Ruddigore. I'm not even sixty percent certain, but it strikes me as familiar.
Can't wait to help out with everything.
Ouch. But at least you're better now.
Ooh, hey, I've joined similar clubs too. We've got a good list of anime this year. Plus after every meeting we go out for ice cream. *nod nods*

It's time to celebrate! Curly has done 1900 words of her essay. One hundred to go and she gets into the minimum word requirement if she says she wrote the essay before she came to uni.Last edited by CurlyKitGirl; 2009-10-12 at 06:35 PM.

Ah, Pinafore. I was singing a few lines earlier today ("I am the Captain of the Pinafore! And a right good captain, too! You're very, very good, And be it understood, I command a right good crew!") When a classmate walks up. It goes like this:
Classmate: Oh yeah? Well I'm the pirate king!
Phase: Naw, for I am a Pirate King!
C: Well I'm the Very Model of a Modern Major General.
P: Have you information vegetable animal and mineral?
C: I know the kings of England and I quote the fights historical.
P: From Marathon to Waterloo in order categorical?
C: I'm very well acquainted with matters mathematical.
P: (You missed a 'too' there) I understand equations both the simple and quadratical.
C: Of... something something I am something with a lot of news.
P: Aha! About binomial theorem I'm teeming with a lot of news,
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse!
I'm very good at integral and differential calculus!
I know the scientific names of beings animalculous!
In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral
I am the very model of a modern Major-General!!
______
I was rather showy at the end there. He walked away, defeated, as I answered hard acrostics in his wake.Last edited by Phase; 2009-10-12 at 06:36 PM.

Well, when my friends and I had a pirate themed party, I was awarded the title of Pirate King on the grounds that I know the whole song.
Oh, better far to live and die,
Under the brave black flag I fly,
Than play a sanctimonious part
With a pirate head and a pirate heart!"'But there's still such a lot to be done...'

. . . Betterish?
Can't you find out somehow? They should have a mailing list. Christmas play is good though.
To be fair, I know at least twenty three peopl who don't know who Gibert & Sullivan were, let alone any of their plays except the ones which were mentioned on that (amazing (because G&S was there)) Simpson's episode.

Re: KataraAltinaII's Premature Not So Short & To-The-Point Random Banter #130
There are a great many more out there. On the stall at the freshers' fair it was a delight when we got people coming up who already knew who Gilbert & Sullivan were. I mean, those people were a deccent portion of the people who signed up, but less of the people who asked about it and a tiny fraction of all the people who came to the freshers' fair.
@Phase: Well, you picked up your friend on omitting a 'too'."'But there's still such a lot to be done...'

Re: KataraAltinaII's Premature Not So Short & To-The-Point Random Banter #130
Yep. I believe that most of the people who signed up, as well as those who just talked to the stall people knew about them and what they do. Sadly my upstairs nextdoor neighbour didn't even know the Modern Major General song! At all. And he's also a physicist so he should've known the elements song!
So I took the liberty of enlightening him as far as I knew it.
Well, in all fairness, missing out the 'too' ruins the rhythm and breaks up the line.Last edited by CurlyKitGirl; 2009-10-12 at 07:32 PM.

Re: KataraAltinaII's Premature Not So Short & To-The-Point Random Banter #130
True.
I just realised I have yet to mention mystunning culinary innovationweird recipe alteration.
See, I was making risotto, but I didn't have any parmesan.
So I could either expend both effort and money in going out and buying some parmesan, or I could replace it with, say a crushed packet of wotsits.
Sounds a bit I know, but, well, they're cheese flavoured and similarly absorbent, so... it kinda worked. Also was cheaper and easier than the alternative.
Yeah, I'm crazy."'But there's still such a lot to be done...'

Re: KataraAltinaII's Premature Not So Short & To-The-Point Random Banter #130
Organic Chem quiz tomorrow on Proteins and Nucleic Acids.
I'm just writing here to help myself practice. The polymer form of a protein is a polypeptide, the monomer form is an Amino Acid. Amino acids are bound by Peptide bonds, and consist of a Carboxyl, an Amino, and a functional R group.
The Nucleic Acids are RNA and DNA. The monomer form is a nucleotide. A nucleotide consists of a phosphate group, a five carbon sugar, and the nitrogenous spaces (Thymine, Cytosine, Adenine, Guinine. Thank you Coulton).
They are bound by phospho-something bonds. Damn. Back to the books.

Re: KataraAltinaII's Premature Not So Short & To-The-Point Random Banter #130
Not yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
I guess I was kind of asking for a hard class, being in Honors Bio and all, and even still I have a better grasp than the majority of my non-scientist classmates.
The only person keeping up with me, and surpassing me, is my friend who took the same special initiative program with me. Both she and I worked at labs over the Summer. I'd never say this out loud, or to anyone who I know personally, but I think I have a bit of a crush on her, this girl I've known since Kindergarden... >.<
But in any case, I'm in it for the basic knowledge, so that I can apply it to the more conceptual stuff. I still much prefer anything Biology-based over any of my previous subjects.

Fun stuff there (I sooooo want a huge poster with the major metabolic pathways)
Biology is different from stuff like chemistry and physics. Studying bio is more like studying psychology or sociology.
@white text: GO FOR IT! knowing her since kinder means you have a huge advantage over other people who might be trying to win her heart.
Also, I wouldn't call it a crush, but I'm starting to really like the girl that's next to me in my bio lab.Last edited by Fostire; 2009-10-12 at 10:04 PM.

Re: KataraAltinaII's Premature Not So Short & To-The-Point Random Banter #130
It seems we are taking similar biology courses then. My course briefly mentioned taxonomy and origin of life and then quickly jumped into cell structure, then membrane structure, and last week we did organic chemistry. This week we are doing metabolism.
The course is fairly boring though cause I already did all this stuff back in Uruguay, but I moved to Canada and since the courses sucked back in Uruguay, I couldn't transfer credit and must now take the courses again. I wouldn't mind since I LOVE biology, but, you know, university ain't cheap.

I hear yeh. Biology is clearly superior to those other, lesser disciplines.
Just so that we don't monopolize the thread, and because I need to go sleep, I suggest a change of topic to "Looking back at old work and realizing you were terrible." I was just glancing back at the posts I used to make on the forum, and they were boring, misspelt, never insightful, and rarely witty! Same goes for writing for assignments and such. Sometimes I wish I could re-do all of Junior High and High School, but with my current intellect and memories...
I'd invest so hard...

Yeah, this is the reason I never re-read any of my old writings. If I did, I'd want to redo them. They would be so much better! But then I'd never have time for new writings.

Re: KataraAltinaII's Premature Not So Short & To-The-Point Random Banter #130
Gentlemen, I find myself compelled to agree with you. Biology is the best of the sciences. Fact.
I don't actually get to take biology this year, though. I'm in high school, and so there's only one biology course per year, and that only starts at grade 11. I took 11 bio in grade 10, but I'm not allowed to take 12 bio until I've taken 11 chem, which I'm doing this year. I did biology early (and loved it), but now I have to wait for a whole year until I get another such course.
(Although I'm doing a biotech course which is also awesome.)
I gradually grow to hate almost every piece of writing I do, often only months after I've written it. I can't say the same for my forum posts on GitP, but I certainly feel that way about the way I was on other forums before I discovered the Playground. I am very glad to not be 2006-me anymore.
