Re: [WFRP] The Hour After Midnight
Lothar
SpoilerJagrun nodded. Reaching to one side of the desk, he picked up a folded piece of paper and handed it to Lothar.
"Please look at the symbol on that piece of paper and tell me if you recognise it. Only look at it as briefly as possible, and then cover it again."
Spoiler
"It was found painted onto the skin of the fourth victim in his own blood. Have you seen it, or anything like it, anywhere else in your investigations?"Last edited by LCP; 2010-04-30 at 04:46 AM.

Re: [WFRP] The Hour After Midnight
Lothar
SpoilerLothar was clearly hesitant to look at the paper, fingering a pendant beneath his shirt. Glancing up at Jagrun's face, he shifted the paper, glanced at it, then covered it again in the space of half a breath.
Clearly relieved, he shook his head. "No." He licked his lips. "I'm not gonna... grow anything... am I? From seeing whatever that was?"Games:

Re: [WFRP] The Hour After Midnight
Lothar
Spoiler"One can only hope not," said Jagrun rather non-commitally, taking the piece of paper away. "It would depend on the quality of your soul, Mr Fischer."
The fearful thing out of sight, he turned back to Lothar. "You said that Puderbrand was serving someone with money. The evidence aside, do you have any suspicions as to who that might be?" He picked up the quill again. "I find that a man's instincts may often be the surest guide through murky waters such as these. Where do you think the culprit might be hiding?"Last edited by LCP; 2010-04-30 at 04:59 AM.

Re: [WFRP] The Hour After Midnight
Lothar
SpoilerLothar looked uncomfortable. Clearly the soldier's soul was in need of some work. He cleared his throat and shook his head. "So far, we have no idea. That's obviously our next task. Um. Look at the villages on his route, see which nob...les. Nobles. Have got lands near where our -that is the- stone shipments were attacked. That sort of thing."
"Uh. Where would you start?" The former soldier's voice was rather small at this point.Games:

Re: [WFRP] The Hour After Midnight
Lothar
SpoilerLothar stammered out an apology, then frowned and nodded to the inquisitor. "Uh, yes, sir. It was strange. At first I thought it was just the Children- sometimes they get into a frenzy, howlin' for blood. But the connection with the changelings- well, there's gotta be, right? The shipment attacks and everythin' else, at the same time?"
He shook his head. "Gotta be linked. So, my thinkin' is that they attacked anyways, 'cause they're driven by the fat spider at the centre of it all. Maybe he's some big bull-beast, building a big ol' stone in the forest, and wants sacred stone for it. Who knows how those... those things think. If they even do." Lothar practically spat the last words, the contempt and hatred of a northlander bringing his accent to the fore.Games:

Re: [WFRP] The Hour After Midnight
Lothar
SpoilerJagrun nodded, listening closely to the soldier's words. He smiled faintly at Lothar's hypothesis, setting down his quill.
"So you think the force behind this is located outside Delberz?"

Re: [WFRP] The Hour After Midnight
Lothar
SpoilerThe soldier tilted his head for a moment, frowning in thought. "...no. Well, perhaps. But whoever's fundin' the changelings and the like knows how people work. Understands money. But I reckon that there's clues outside the town- somethin' out there. Could be a nobleman or fat- uh, merchant," Lothar had the graces to flush, "based out of town."
He sighed and threw up his hands. "So it's something what can manipulate beastmen, knows how money works, and can create subtle plans. Could be one thing outta town, one in, and somethin' between- or one doin' both based in or out. Hell if I know- we're only part way there, yet."Games:

Re: [WFRP] The Hour After Midnight
Lothar
SpoilerJagrun nodded.
"You don't think, then, that the purpose of Pilserier's excursions could have been to communicate with the Beastmen? Carrying messages from someone inside the town?" Lothar was aware that his every expression was being intensely scrutinised. "Someone with an interest in preventing the completion of Sigmar's cathedral?"

Re: [WFRP] The Hour After Midnight
Lothar
SpoilerLothar nodded firmly. "Ay-- yes, sir, I absolutely think that. I'm just not sure if that means the top boss is in town or out o' it- that's the next step. I think." He suddenly paused, frowning. "Or is that too obvious?"Games:

Re: [WFRP] The Hour After Midnight
Lothar
Spoiler"Experience has taught me not to try and second-guess the followers of Chaos, Mr Fischer. They are capable of being as direct as they can be insidious."
He made a note.
"So you have... no suspects whatsoever at present," he said as he wrote, speaking almost off-handedly. "No-one who has, say, expressed hostility to the construction of the cathedral." He glanced up at Lothar. "I may put that on the record?"

Re: [WFRP] The Hour After Midnight
Lothar
SpoilerThe former soldier looked uncomfortable, twisting the ring on his finger. "I wouldn't say that, sir. Lots of people are unhappy 'bout things, 'bout the hunger and sickness in the streets. Some of 'em might say words about expensive stoneworks."
He shook his head. "But I couldn' name anyone with the money what was backin' Puderbrand and his... men, or whatever. His mutants."Last edited by goblinpaladin; 2010-04-30 at 09:46 AM.

Spoiler"Lead the way," said the watchman.
"Yessir. I'm warning you, sir, it's... uh... rather messy."

Re: [WFRP] The Hour After Midnight
Pieter
SpoilerThe watchmen reacted to the sight of the body the way one might expect - chalky-faced, one remained behind, while the other headed back towards the centre of town to inform the Guard House.
Taking his leave, Pieter went in search of a white ribbon. It surely couldn't be too hard to find...
OOC: Unless you want to, there's no need to RP shopping. Suitable ribbons will cost six pennies apiece.

Lothar

Re: [WFRP] The Hour After Midnight
Lothar
Spoiler"Well thank you," said Jagrun, scribbling something at the bottom of his notes. "You've been most helpful."
He looked up at Lothar. "You may go."
As the soldier rose to leave, the Witch Hunter coughed.
"The other door, please," he said, indicating a different exit to the room than the door through which Lothar had entered.

I'm not going to wear them right away. I'll first go back near the Temple bridge and inquire about the two murders, just in case there were leaks since yesterday evening.

Re: [WFRP] The Hour After Midnight
Pieter
SpoilerHeading back towards the Temple Bridge, Pieter tried to ignore the steady, damp drift of the rain that was swiftly chilling him to his bones - and to stop his mind from wandering back to the bloody ruin that had once been Mr Fendahl. Arriving at his destination, he began to ask around - the people going about their business there had heard nothing more about last night's murders than he had himself, but they all had one interesting thing to say.
"Haven't you heard? It's happened again!"
Numbers varied, but according to the word on the street, at least three more people had died in the night, all in the same grisly fashion. Pieter wondered whether word had spread fast enough for Mr Fendahl to be included in the gruesome tally - or whether he made it four.

Re: [WFRP] The Hour After Midnight
Pieter
SpoilerPieter felt sick.
At least three more murders. Things are happening too fast. I can't do this on my own, I need Rafale and the others. They surely know things I don't.
Since yesterday he had made little actual progress. Judging from the victims and the state they had been found in, he knew one thing: the aim of the murders was to spread terror. That did not help him much, since terror was but the means to an end, not an end in itself. Pieter suspected this was only the prelude to something much worse. So what? The witch hunter and his dogs had surely reached the same conclusion by now. And, no doubt, this aura of fear suited them just fine.
Pieter was tired of being out of the loop, of remaining one step behind everyone else. Now was the time to gather information from those who knew the most.
Okay, bought it.
Question in the OOC thread coming.SpoilerRunning:

Raffy the Not-That-Stupid Sparrowhawk
Spoiler
“You are not the first person to say as much. Would you describe their actions as suspicious?”
He tilts his head. "I would only say it is unusual. Perhaps it's that they are not trained watchmen. Or maybe they are being confounded by dark magics, Sir. I'm sure they are virtuous men, but something is stopping them, Sir."
“You mentioned the man Pilserier. Are you aware that he is dead?”

Raffy
Spoiler"He was found poisoned in his cell," said Jagrun, consulting a piece of paper. "Along with another suspect the guards had dragged in - one Friedrich Hoffer. I am awaiting Captain von Brucker's full report on how it was allowed to happen."
He looked up at Raffy.
"Are you aware of anyone who might be a suspect? Anyone Pilserier was afraid of - anyone who might have wanted him silenced?"

Pieter
SpoilerOOC: Unless I say otherwise, Pieter will be wearing his normal travel clothes (including the white ribbon he just bought), not his clerical brown robes.
He will look for the site of one of this night's murders, obviously not the one in the house he just visited.
Does he need to pass a Gossip test? At any rate, here we go:

Raffy
Spoiler
Raffy considers. "Well Sir, he was very sure that someone was going to rescue him or clear him in court. And as I said Sir, the mutant we questioned said Pilserier acted as liaison to someone or something called the Court. I assume that's who he was counting on for help, Sir. Looks like they found a different way to cover his liability."
He squints, and remembers something else. "Oh, Sir, he did say he had a nephew and a niece. Sometimes it was one or the other, sometimes both. We thought he made them up, but it might be worth looking into, Sir."

Re: [WFRP] The Hour After Midnight
Raffy
Spoiler“The Court,” repeated Jagrun. “And he believed they would save him. Interesting.”
Sitting back in his chair, the Witch Hunter regarded Raffy with an evaluating eye.
“I saw you yesterday at the Baron’s reception, in the company of a wealthy lady. Lady Samtzunge, was it not?” he said, almost conversationally. “Do you know her?”
[hr]
Pieter
SpoilerIt didn’t take Pieter long to locate the nearest of the recent murders – it had apparently taken place by the river, just east of the Morrgarten. A gaggle of Hounds were standing guard, a muddy travelling-cloak having been thrown over the body: from the street, Pieter could look down on them from above. There were three standing by the body, looking decidedly ill-at-ease – a fourth sat sentry on the stone steps that led down to the muddy river-bank, trying to light a pipe out of the wind.Last edited by LCP; 2010-04-30 at 01:42 PM.
