Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
I've heard good things about the Lazy Newb Pack. It includes several graphics packs to choose from and some utilities to make your life easier, and it has a launcher where you can change settings without having to dig into the game's ini files.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
I've never actually used graphics, except the partial ones from the Fallout mod (they give everything graphics when complete, but mostly stick with walls and some icons otherwise).
Tell you what - I think I'll give Mayday's a look.
... As soon as I'm done sorting my tabs into three windows. TV Tropes is a menace, I tells you.

I don't care for graphics. I just went with a font that looks nice and crisp.

I use Cooz' tileset myself. It's square, and I like the shading.

Do tilesets work with Macs? I've never sure.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
As long as it's square, I'm good. Square makes planning fortresses that much easier, cause it looks just as it does when I plan on graph paper.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Square tile sets/graphic packs make it much easier to plan out and build the fort. I have to use one. Oh and the one I use is Cooz's.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
I remember the first time i realized the non-modded game wasn't square....
I spent like 20 minutes trying to get a room perfectly square and then i counted to be sure i was right and it came out to be like 35X30(don't actually remember the exact figures).
AUGH!
I have a minor case of OCD and it just grates me, i've gotten used to it, fortunately.
Now i have to go organize my stone by color.....
I'm not that OCD you nutters...

Always nice to see someone's reaction when they discover FlareChannel for the first time.

I am here to dispute that claim.
I see your flarechannel and raise you an Undergrotto.
And remember this was all built by hand.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
I've been meaning to start trying to play Dwarf Fortress again(I killed everything by starvation last try, possibly) and will be trying the lazy newb pack, but where should I go to get the basics of how to play? While the wiki is helpful, it's also a bit confusing.
Thanks for any and all help.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
So, does anyone know where I find the reaction for burning wood to make coal? Need to mod it, and I've searched everywhere.
Knowing how to make more stuff magmaproof would be nice too.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Sorry, I got it wrong, it's [GRASP]. Of course, if you mod the game this way, do be aware of one thing:many creatures share the same body parts. So if you mod it, and then another creature uses that body part, it would also have a prehensile body part. I forgot that, and when I made the cat mod, it ended up that all creatures with mouths had prehensile mouths. So I had to make a seperate "kitty mouth" just for cats. Until I did, I had wild animals capable of performing advanced grappling manuevers, since they now had a grasper to perform them with.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
So, adventurer mode. At times, the RNG is bad. Sometimes, it's amusingly terrible. Often, it's a little nonsensical but doesn't leave any real impression. Rarely, it's good. And once in a long while, it's completely amazing.
I just started a dwarven wrestler a while back (who since died).
It was one of those times.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma

Why. Won't. It. Die.
My hammerdwarf eventually got his right arm messed up beyond repair, so no steel shield for him.
He then went on to down five more night creatures and is still kicking (with no armour beyond a looted cedar breastplate, at that). I'm not sure how.
He also has two companions - a mechanic and a diagnoser, both human. The mechanic is heavily injured all over, but it never seems to slow him down. He basically just leaps in front of stuff and tanks it, and appears to be indestructible. Leaves a trail of blood wherever he walks.
The good doctor, meanwhile, has faced two night creatures - giant ones - and somehow bisected them with a scalpel, sending the lower half flying.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Blunt weapons alone are underpowered. They can break arms and cripple a guy fast, but they have a tough time killing an enemy. I remember a thread on bay12games that said a mixed group of hammers and axes preformed better than just straight axes. The reason, hammers could cripple the enemy quickly while the axes finished the job. Meanwhile the axes wouldn't disable the enemy unless it dismembered the enemy.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
The last time i went through adventure mode i did it for lol's. I made him an Misc. Object User. The first cave i went into i picked up a rat and used it as a weapon. He surprisingly lasted a good while..... I think he died to Wolf 253 or something....
