Re: Archonic's Archaic Acronymical Antidisestablishmentarianism Random banter 148
Actually, I've been thinking of starting a General Tech Support Thread, but I want to do it right. I want to add stuff like useful links, common problems, and FAQs into the first post.
That's why I haven't gotten around to it yet. I don't want to just click New Thread and say "Hey, guys, ask stuff about computers here!"

Now there's a thought....there was a playgrounder who was on the computer help threads often and seemed to be knowledgable, but I can't remember his/her username... Probably best not to bother them out of the blue anyway.

Having trouble at work?
Bored with routine?
Boss breathing down your neck?
Customers making you want to wall bang?
Too much time on your hands?
What you need is an Office Rowing team.

Re: Archonic's Archaic Acronymical Antidisestablishmentarianism Random banter 148
There used to be a general Tech Support help thread here on Friendly Banter, but it got abandoned after a while because people still posted their new problems as new threads instead of posting them at the end of the tech support thread.
I assume they figured they'd get more replies if they posted their question as a new thread rather then hope that people would pick up on the problem if it was posted at the end of a thread with a bunch of other problems.
Also, a lot of genuine problems in that thread were just answered with "buy a Mac" or "install Linux" instead of trying to give actual help to the problem at hand.
I know that's what made me stop going into that thread.

Re: Archonic's Archaic Acronymical Antidisestablishmentarianism Random banter 148
i agree...
[rant]
the answer to "i'm having problems with my PC's graphics card drivers" shouldn't be "buy a Mac because the drivers always work, and there are no viruses, and it shoots double rainbows from it's DVD drive" or "install Linux, that way you won't need the fancy drivers".
and "my explorer isn't working properly" shouldn't immediatly be answered with "Buy a mac", "install Linux" or "install Chrome/Firefox/Safari/Netscape"
prehaps they have a reason they prefer Windows &/or IE.
prehaps their problem can be solved without going out and buying a Ł2000 peice of equipment.

I finally (and sadly) shaved my goatee. It had become a shadow of its former glory due to constant trimming and was just a mess in general.
I'd like a moment of silence in memory of the goatee.I use black for sarcasm.

Oh, screw that! Moment of noisy and overwrought mourning, incoming!
WHY! WWHHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYY you horrible and hostile gods of barbering???!!! It was a gift of rare and precious proportions, and it melted away like fat on the fire before the altar of the sharpened triplicate edge! (sinks down to her knees, beating her breast. . .)

Haruki-kun, that problem of some portions of the web being inaccessible without rhyme or reason (or with the reason of "everything I was already connected to is fine, every new site is inaccessible") is rarely a problem on the user's end. It's also one where calling up and finding out if it's your ISP's problem or not takes about as much time as the actual fix of it does when it's not your ISP's problem. "Wait and see" is the best you can do.

Re: Archonic's Archaic Acronymical Antidisestablishmentarianism Random banter 148
YES! Thank you! I already had that experience. I googled this problem and came across a tech support forum. The thread onit got 3 replies. "I don't know, sorry", a certain solution that didn'twork, and "Well, if you'd just stop using windows, the problem would be fixed! =)"
If I COULD I would have!
The problem is that I live on Campus and it's the school providing the Internet, so I can't askforsupport. And everyone else seems to be fine...
