"I lost just about everything, with scarce more than the drawing I have here," his eyes flick to the bag at his waist, "and they chased me deep into the woods. I finally drove them away, but hurt bad, and you know there are no trees where I'm from? Without Kess or Celia or any equipment, I thought I was dead for sure. But something kept me going there."
He shudders.
"Killing an animal for food, finally. I'd never even killed a lizard, never hurt a soul even in defending my ship. Honestly, I don't see that I was worth 'Exalting', at least yet."
