Compare OoTS
I thought this would be fun, as there are plenty of characters that have noticeable similarities. Here's the guide.
Who do OoTS characters remind you of in other media (stories, movies, any fiction)? If you think they have something in common, just say why, what the other character is from, and who it compares to in OoTS.
I'll start with Elan. He reminds me of Captain Carrot from the Discworld series, he is very innocent-minded and yet still has a certain swash buckling, hero quality that is pretty obvious. Also, it's hard to not like him, be very annoyed with him, yes, (Sam Vimes feels that way to Carrot occasionally) but hate him, no.
Also, if we could avoid pointing out that Yikyik is a bit like Inigo Montoya, that would be very nice.Spoiler: This signature is a historical relic from a long-ago time of regular forum activity.Aww man! Even all the witty self referencing sigs are gone now!

Re: Compare OoTS
To be fair, strange as it is, Elan has always reminded me of Tasslehoff Burrfoot, the kender.

Re: Compare OoTS
Roy is Charlie Brown, because he's bald.
Belkar is Lucy: Chaotic Evil even when there's no reason for it.
V is Schroeder, oblivious to everything except his art.
Durkon is Linus, attempting to enlighten the other characters...
which I suppose makes Thor the Great Pumpkin.
Either that, or Elan is Linus, and Banjo is the Great Pumpkin.
The only one who gets screwed out of an easy matchup is Haley, who ends up as a sort of Sally/ Peppermint Patty hybrid.
Unless one makes Lucy's defining trait cunningness, rather than simple evil.
In this case, Haley becomes Lucy, Belkar becomes Snoopy, and Mr. Scruffy becomes Woodstock.
Oh, and that would make Julia Sally.Last edited by CletusMusashi; 2011-02-21 at 07:55 PM.

Re: Compare OoTS
Lol. I was just thinking before I read this thread that while many people think that Samuel L. Jackson would be great to play Roy, his voice doesn't really fit Roy IMO, and I imagined Roy as sounding something like a grown-up version of Charlie Brown's voice from the animated specials.
I don't think of the other members of the OotS as sounding like Peanuts characters, though.

Belkar would have to be Black Mage from 8-Bit Theater, because they both like randomly killing stuff.

I agree with Lemonus, The Belkster and BM have so many similarities. By which I mean they're both knife wielding maniacs, but one has a cat and the other has magical powers.

Re: Compare OoTS
Have to chime in on this, because Belkar definitely reminds me of Bean from Ender's Shadow. Hard to put my finger on it, but I think it has a lot to do with Belkar's dream sequence, and Shojo instructing him to fake character development and all of that to be more accepted by everyone else.
Also, he's short.

Re: Compare OoTS
I have not thought of this before. That is awesome.
Roy's a bit too competent for a Charlie Brown, but he does have a bit of the self-deprecation required for the role, I suppose.
I would definitely put Durkon down for Linus, because he's always the voice of wisdom and reason.
Elan would be matched with Sally. Both are ditzy blondes and cloudcuckoolanders, and really annoying to the main character. He also doubles as Snoopy quite a bit.
Haley... Yeah, Haley is a tough one. Peppermint Patty wouldn't be too bad a fit, I suppose.

Re: Compare OoTS
From the Buffy/Angelverse:
Roy is AtS season 5, highly-educated Charles Gunn.
Haley is late-season Faith.
Miko is S7 Buffy. (Why, yes, I DO hate Season 7, how did you guess?)
Durkon is Giles.
Belkar is Spike.
V is a combination of BtVS S3 Wesley... and Dark Willow.
Elan is Xander.
Scruffy is Miss Kitty Fantastico.
Celia is Tara.
Sabine is Lilah.
Redcloak is Richard Wilkins the Third.
Banjo is Sid the Dummy.
And Thog is Olaf.Last edited by CletusMusashi; 2011-03-05 at 01:29 AM.

Re: Compare OoTS
Surely you must mean Xykon instead of Redcloak? The mayor's goofy non sequiturs and charisma seem a much better fit for Xykon. (Obviously the mayor's not undead like Xykon, but the match can't be perfect--though you'd think that with all the undead in the Buffyverse ...)
It's hard for me to think of a character truly like Redcloak, but I'd say his nerdiness matches the geek trio from season 6 somewhat.

Re: Compare OoTS
No, I meant Redcloak is The Mayor. In up to his eyebrows in all kinds of horrendous evilness, but with an ultimate Lawful goal to remake the world and rule over good old-fashioned family values, no matter how many babies he has to kill in order to get there.
Xykon doesn't really have a good Buffy equivalent. That's why Buffy is still alive. Usually.Last edited by CletusMusashi; 2011-03-07 at 02:56 AM.

Re: Compare OoTS
Belkar is Sideshow Bob - psychopathic, yet highly articulate and disturbingly entertaining.
Durkon - I can't improve on Giles from 'Buffy', that's a perfect match.
Roy - is a combination of Chiwetel Ejiofor roles. In combat he's a bit like the Operative from 'Serenity' (simultaneously efficient and impatient); at other times, more like 'Lola' from 'Kinky Boots' - charismatic, sarcastic and never quite stops hoping for those around him to show signs of intelligence.
V - maybe Malcolm, of 'in the Middle' fame - painfully aware of his own intelligence, yet somehow not quite able to benefit from it.
Elan - I got nothing.
Haley reminds me of Alyson Hannigan, but more in her role of Michelle from American Pie than Willow.
Xykon - again, the Mayor from Buffy is a perfect fit. Even the sorceror-lich thing isn't far off, when you consider his backstory.
That, of course, makes Redcloak Principal Snyder. Works for me.
MitD - Garth, from Wayne's World."None of us likes to be hated, none of us likes to be shunned. A natural result of these conditions is, that we consciously or unconsciously pay more attention to tuning our opinions to our neighbor’s pitch and preserving his approval than we do to examining the opinions searchingly and seeing to it that they are right and sound." - Mark Twain

Re: Compare OoTS
Actually, if you're going for a Xykon comparison as regards the Buffy universe, might I suggest Angelus? Charming but sadistic, and goes for the hurt at least as often as the kill. Both are basically hedonists of evil.
Mayor Wilkins is probably more like Tarquin.
