Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
There's more to the comparison. Like how Twilight is totally Patchy. I mean she's a shut-in living in a library with a cute pet/familiar, has a color-scheme dominated by purple and is known for her incredible skill with magic.

Oh, and Celestia is a nicer version of Yukari. They're both huge trolls, they both created the setting and they are both beings far beyond the norm in their respective settings. And did I mention the trolling?

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
And I know that it has been quite a while, but...Ten Desires is out and translation of the levels not in the demo is already well under way!
Also, I personally just love Seiga's design, it's simple but cute. I'm less fond of Mimazou's, but fanartists have done good stuff with her already, as well as an inexplicable amount of porn and ecchi. In general I like all their designs, though, and the music is pretty good I think. I'll report back with more once I, you know, actually play the game

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Huh, sounds like the game is based on quite a bit of history, if the wiki's character descriptions are to be believed. Of course, the supposed notables some of the characters are based on have been lolified.
SpoilerAnd sad face, looks like all that Mima speculation turned out to be false. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. No idea why several older characters have shown up again though.
Either way, I'll have to go look around for it eventually.Youmu "Myon" Konpaku avatar by Prime32, avatar creator extraordinaire!

Well hey, look what I found.
No vocals, and the subtitles are in Japanese, but hey, it's still pretty cool.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Yeah, it was purely a typo. I had seen the Madoka crossover art already and cringed at the pun. Still, I welcome the new girls, like I said I find their designs quite cute. What their personalities will end up being is everyone's guess, though.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Well, tried the new game. Almost 1CC'd it, but lost due to overconfidence on the last spellcard - it starts so pathetically easy it caught me by surprise when it got harder and I lost twice in fifteen seconds.
Have to say, the game's left me a tad cold. Music's nothing special or memorable (and sounds way too reminiscent of older games in many points), and most of the new characters' designs haven't wowed me the way Shou or Byakuren did. Miko's in particular I rather dislike.
I do like Futo, though. I think it's the hat . She also seems to have the coolest patterns. Also, a good point for the game is the aimability of Master Spark!

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
I can't quite agree with Drascin on this. I find the music pretty memorable, especially Welcome to Youkai Temple and Rigid Paradise, and generally without the somewhat annoying tracks that most of the other games have had. I also find the somewhat simpler, cleaner designs of many of the characters appealing, though I will agree that they aren't as good as Shou and Byakuren's. Those two have some of the best designs from a purely visual perspective, though.
I also like that the game isn't as brutal as the two immediately preceding it. I will be able to actually play and enjoy this one, unlike UFO. So currently I have a good impression of this one. I also look forward to seeing how the doujin community reacts to the conflict between youkai Buddhists and anti-youkai Daoists. Myouren and the Daoists are clearly being set up in opposition to each other from what translations I've seen. The game seems generally more concerned with plot than most Touhou games given how all of the last three bosses have substantially longer profiles than even Yuyuko or Byakuren.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
The final boss (and lackeys) get in-battle speech bubbles, too.
But yeah, quite fond of this game, though the soundtrack in parts isn't really to my liking. In any case, it's good. Certainly worth the purchase, though that's hardly surprising. And I do like parts of the soundtrack, too. The stage 4 theme and the theme for... what'shername the stage 4 boss are amazing.
Also? Normal no death run complete. On my first try. Wheeeeeeeee.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
You mean Seiga Kaku? Her and Miko have my favorite designs of the new characters, actually.
Also, I'll admit I can't really remember the tracks for stage 4-6 and their bosses. I haven't gotten that far and only got a brief look at them, but I did enjoy hearing them in the clip I saw.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Yeah, severely disagree. Toyota in particular has a design that made me go "really?". Ad the game is just... average in general. Nothing that wowed me, no character that really made me think "damn, she looks so cool", nothing. I just went through the game, in and out, and ended with a shrug. A few cool patterns (mostly on Futo, but the 4th stage boss as well), a music that the best I can say about is that it's not obstrusive... I dunno. Just... bleh.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Stage 4 boss was the funniest thing since BROFIST Unzan. I approve of zombie meatshield.
Other things I found amusing were that the new Taoist characters use arrow projectiles, and that the Extra stage boss uses foxes (Ran), red birds (Mokou), and frogs (Suwako) as projectiles.Last edited by Mirrinus; 2011-08-15 at 09:03 PM.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
The full translated transcripts are up on the wiki. A few things catch my eye:
Youmu lacks two of the ten desires, which means a few things. For one, it means Miko can't predict her future as she can for the other heroines, because she doesn't have the full set of ten to work with. It also means that Youmu is apparently one-fifth enlightened (no desires at all being the state of buddhahood). In addition, "attachment to life" and "envy of death" are usually the last two to be abandoned. No wonder the crew judged Youmu so highly.
Mami (Yes, I'm calling her Mami for short. This will totally not result in confusion in the future.) apparently came from the outside world, as she mentions crossing a great sea. She herself says Nue called her, whereas Nue says "we" (the youkai as a collective, presumably) brought her in. My guess would be that Yukari decided to bring her on behalf of all youkai to balance the scales - after all, the human side just got themselves a Taoist, a hermit, and a saint in one go. No wonder Yukari sleeps all the time. Must be tiring having to keep growing the place.
Incidentally, while Miko doesn't have detatched sleeves, she still flashes armpits, as is proper for a miko.
As for Mima... I won't say I told you so, because I'm pretty sure I didn't (except to Prime on AIM). But I was sure thinking it.Last edited by Jm2c; 2011-08-16 at 05:39 AM.

I don't remember this. It's from chapter 4 or later, right? So where did you find it?

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Some guy posted translated versions.
Chapter 4, in which Marisa misunderstands the concept of zoos.
Chapter 5, in which Reimu complains about still being poor.
I keep meaning to get around to trying to decipher chapter 6. I can't translate by any means, but I'm confident enough that I could get at least a rough understanding with a lot of looking up.Last edited by Jm2c; 2011-08-16 at 08:14 PM.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
So...how long until we get an official war between Miko and Byakuren? Seems like everything is building up to that. Of course, I'm firmly on Byakuren's side. She just has a better theme and prettier spellcards.
Let's also throw in Kanako for good measure in this religious war.

Make love, not war. I advocate ByakurenxMiko shipping.
Failing that, I find Miko's spellcards plenty pretty. And she made the constitution into freaking laser beams.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Byakuren is already being Flanderised into a bully.
Let's also throw in Kanako for good measure in this religious war.
Touhou canon seems to be becoming more and more coherent lately. First UFO references "an antique shop", then Fairy Wars used characters from a manga, and now Ten Desires has Reimu mentioning she once visited the moon (Silent Sinner in Blue) and Marisa saying she needs bodily conditioning to stay healthy (Wild and Horned Hermit).Last edited by Prime32; 2011-08-17 at 01:38 PM.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
But Byakuren is Youkai Jesus, she can't be a bully!
Besides it's Miko, not Byakuren who is portrayed as not really having mended their ways and done nothing to make up for the crimes of their past.
Religious conflict seems imminent and would be an excellent topic for a doujin game I think. It would have at least three faction since there's no way Moriya would stay out of it, though I guess they might ally with the Daoists.

Re: Touhou II: Story of an Eastern Thread
Neither had exactly selfless reasons for becoming what they became (in fact, in the end both had the exact same reason), but Byakuren does seem to have mended her ways better than Miko. I guess we'll see how future works end up characterizing them further.
I can see it now. This should totally be a Mirrinus LP if and when it is done.
